‘We were built for racing, unlike Vegas’: COTA boss not concerned by new F1 rivals

March 29, 2023 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Just this past weekend, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas held one of its biggest events on its annual calendar: the NASCAR Cup Series. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Featuring a handful of special guest drivers including F1 champions Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen and multiple IMSA champion and Daytona 24 Hours winner Jordan Taylor, it was one of several major international motorsport events being held at the now ten-year-old circuit in 2023 – including the United States Grand Prix, which will take place in October. After a decade of the US Grand Prix at COTA – interrupted only by Covid – Formula 1 appears to have finally found a solid footing in America. Rather than fizzle out like so many other attempts to establish a US race over the decades, attendance at COTA has grown over recent years to the point where it now boasts the largest crowd of the season in terms of total attendance over the race weekend. F1’s arrival at COTA in 2012 … [Read more...] about ‘We were built for racing, unlike Vegas’: COTA boss not concerned by new F1 rivals

Jean-Pierre Jabouille, whose victory for Renault in the 1979 French Grand Prix heralded a new era of turbo-powered Formula 1 cars, has died at the age of 80. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free It was a deserved breakthrough victory, the culmination of years of development work and repeated failures of turbo engines. While it came in Jabouille’s third season with the team, it was only their second points-scoring finish. Alpine, the F1 team run by Renault, issued a statement expressing that it was “incredibly saddened” by Jabouille’s death. “A humble racing driver, brilliant engineer, and a pioneer of our sport. Jean-Pierre was a true racer,” Alpine said in the statement. “He spearheaded Renault’s journey into F1 in 1977 with his resilient and dare to do attitude. He was Renault’s first Grand Prix winner in 1979, a landmark moment in Renault’s journey in Formula 1. His determination and dedication to succeed inspired many, and these values remain central to … [Read more...] about Jean-Pierre Jabouille, 1942-2023

Hamilton urges more action on human rights after letter from death row inmate

March 26, 2022 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Lewis Hamilton has called on those in positions of power to do more to improve human rights in countries such as Saudi Arabia, where Formula 1 is racing this weekend. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Following reports 81 men were executed in Saudi Arabia on a single day earlier this month, Hamilton revealed he had been contacted by Abdullah al-Howaiti, who is on death row in Saudi Arabia. Howaiti was sentenced to death in 2019 over a robbery which occured three years earlier, when he was 14, which his family insist he was not involved in . “It’s obviously mind-blowing to hear the stories,” said Hamilton during Friday morning’s FIA press conference. “I’ve heard that there’s a letter sent to me, for example, from a 14-year-old that’s on death row. At 14 you don’t know what the hell you’re doing in life.” Last year Hamilton described Saudi Arabia’s legislation against its LGBTQ+ community as “terrifying.” Yesterday he said: “My position’s still the … [Read more...] about Hamilton urges more action on human rights after letter from death row inmate

December 27, 2022 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

The 2022 Formula 1 season was full of drama on track and in the paddock, some of it leftover from the previous year’s controversies. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free With all that going on, it was easy to overlook some of the strange and surprising stories of the last 12 months. Red Bull ‘launched’ a show car Formula 1 car launches always attract huge interest as they can give the first indication of how the teams will compare against each other for the season ahead with any innovative designs. That was especially the case this year as teams produced their first designs for radically new regulations. Preferring not to give the opposition an early peek at their real RB18, Red Bull instead presented a repainted show car at their launch on February 9th. The real thing, which appeared in testing two weeks later, looked very different. October 2, 2023 by www.motor1.com Leave a Comment

New teaser images provide our best look yet at the upcoming Renault Kardian. The B-segment crossover is scheduled to break cover in Brazil at the end of the month. The fresh photos show the model’s silhouette, front-end design, and emblem. The Kardian will be the first Renault model to wear the automaker’s new front-end design language outside Europe. Its face will feature the automaker’s redesigned logo in the grille and its unique lighting signature. Gallery: Renault Kardian Teased 3 Photos The photos aren’t very revealing, but some Photoshop work uncovered additional details. The crossover has slim headlights at the top of its face, with gray plastic inserts in the bumper likely housing the fog lights, which appear to bookend a trapezoidal lower grille opening. The profile photo reveals the crossover’s roof bars and familiar-looking rear fenders. Rumors suggest the Kardian is Renault’s version of the Dacia … [Read more...] about Renault Teases Kardian Crossover With Brand’s New Lighting Pattern

10 things we learned from the 2023 MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix

October 2, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

The MotoGP title battle has intensified after Jorge Martin romped to a double victory at the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix. Having already dealt significant damage to Francesco Bagnaia 's championship lead in India after the factory Ducati rider crashed out of the grand prix, Martin twisted the knife in Japan. Storming (quite literally on Sunday) to his second brace of wins in three rounds, Martin is now just three points behind Bagnaia in the title chase. But it was not all lost for Bagnaia, as he cured the braking problems that had been plaguing him in recent rounds. Behind them on Sunday, Marc Marquez scored his first grand prix podium since last year's Australian round. Whether it's enough to keep him in place at Honda, he says it won't make a difference to his decision. Of that, he is "quite sure", even if no announcement arrived in Japan. Elsewhere, KTM made gains with its new carbon fibre chassis, while Cal Crutchlow 's one-off return as a wildcard offered some … [Read more...] about 10 things we learned from the 2023 MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix

Neuville to drive Opel Corsa from rally debut in Belgian event

January 23, 2018 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Neuville and his brother Yannick rebuilt the car in their family workshop and the WRC runner-up will use it for the first time at the popular Belgian historic event from February 2-4. Winners of last year's event in a Porsche 911, Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul have asked not to be included in the official classification due to the modified nature of their car. "We decided to put a more powerful engine in to have some more fun," Neuville told Motorsport.com. "It's a Corsa B kit-car engine, which is very rare, but we managed to source one. It's got about 210hp, so it should be interesting. "We made a few minor improvements. Let's just say the car will be a bit of a hybrid. "I don't want to drive the car as a 'demo' as I really want to compete and be able to register my times, but my name will not appear in the overall rankings. "Our aim is first and foremost to be present in this great Belgian rally event and put on a show. "I really love this rally. The … [Read more...] about Neuville to drive Opel Corsa from rally debut in Belgian event
