Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday sided with a football coach from Washington state who sought to kneel and pray on the field after games. The court ruled 6-3 along ideological lines for the coach. The justices said the coach's prayer was protected by the First Amendment. “The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the majority. The case forced the justices to wrestle with how to balance the religious and free speech rights of teachers and coaches with the rights of students not to feel pressured into participating in religious practices. The outcome could strengthen the acceptability of some religious practices in the public school setting. The decision is also the latest in a line of Supreme Court rulings … [Read more...] about Supreme Court sides with coach who sought to pray after games

Temp worker held on $5M bond in Illinois warehouse shooting
BOLINGBROOK, Ill. (AP) — A temporary worker has been charged in a shooting that killed a co-worker and wounded two others at an automotive interior products warehouse in suburban Chicago, authorities said. Charles McKnight Jr., 27, was arraigned Sunday on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder and ordered held on $5 million bond. It wasn't clear Monday whether McKnight has an attorney and jail records didn't list one for him. Bolingbrook Police Chief Mike Rompa said in a statement that McKnight was confronted about 6:25 a.m. Saturday by employees at the WeatherTech facility in Bolingbrook who accused him of robbing two employees of a watch and wallet at gunpoint. That led to an argument, which was followed by the shooting, Rompa said. McKnight was arrested about three hours later near a home, authorities said, and a gun and the reportedly stolen items were recovered. Central Hightower, 37, died following the shooting. How a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico could affect Houston weather this week
The tropics are finally starting to light up as the first month of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season draws to a close, and a weak disturbance tracked this week just off the Texas Gulf Coast could bring some much-needed rain to Houston and beyond. At long last, showers and thunderstorms are forecast to kick off in Houston on Monday afternoon as a frontal boundary moves in from the northeast, combining with onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico to pop a weeks-long heat bubble that put much of Greater Houston into a drought. Houston normally sees about 4.75 inches of rain in the month of June. This year, the Bayou City has recorded less than a quarter inch. Forecasters with the National Weather Service (NWS) in League City predict a majority of the area will see between a tenth of an inch to an inch of rain by late Monday. "Any little bit helps," said NWS meteorologist Brian Kyle. "But I don't think the amount that's forecast is enough to break the drought." Y'all. Rain chances … [Read more...] about How a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico could affect Houston weather this week

Javon Green, 26, will face charges of having a concealed weapon in a public place and having a loaded gun in a public place, both felonies that possibly could be reduced to misdemeanors, attorney Randy Knox told the San Francisco Chronicle. Green was scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office declined to comment to the paper Monday. Messages from The Associated Press seeking comment weren't immediately returned. Green shot to death Nesta Bowen, 27, last Wednesday on a Muni train, his attorney said. Knox told the paper that his client was a security guard who carried a gun for … [Read more...] about Attorney: Man involved in train killing shot in self-defense
