August 1, 2018, 2:44 pm by Justin King The flagship performance coupe is not expected to be replaced until the next decade. Nissan has promised to preview the next-generation GT-R with a new concept car.Speaking at an event in India, the company's senior VP of global design, Alfonso Albaisa, promised that the next GT-R will not take inspiration from the limited-edition Italdesign GT-R50 concept that appeared earlier this year."The GT-R50 is not the next GT-R," he said, as quoted by IndianAutosBlog. "It's a celebration about the people behind GTR. They are really not concept cars, they are collector cars."Recent reports suggest executives are referring to the next flagship coupe as "the fastest super sports car in the world." It will ride upon an entirely new platform, perhaps with some level of electrification to increase performance.Engineers are currently working out the details on the platform and powertrain before the design process moves to the next stage. In some ways, VW’s Atlas Cross Sport Concept is just that: A concept vehicle at an auto show loaded with gee-wiz features. In a lot of other ways, this is just VW’s latest SUV. But the real key to the Atlas Cross Sport Concept can be found in the press materials when VW says, “Atlas five-seater shows that Volkswagen has a serious SUV strategy.” In other words, “take our SUVs seriously.” Well, should we take the Atlas Cross Sport Concept seriously? Up To Speed For those out of the loop, the quick sketch is that SUVs are a big deal. People want them, for a number of reasons you don’t have to be Sigmund Freud to really figure out. And car makers want to sell them, because the profit margins are higher than traditional cars. So, bottom line: Everybody wants in on the SUV game. And Volkswagen is kind of late to the party. So, their Atlas Cross Sport Concept has to hit all the right notes and make an impression. The Atlas Cross Sport Concept sits … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Concept: A Serious Contender?
The Chicago Auto Show will play host to, among others, the Nissan 370Zki (pronounced ‘ski’) concept car, and despite the vehicle’s own conspicuous absence in the teaser video shown, it does seem to be capable of kicking up some snow. As the name suggests, the 370Zki concept is based on the Nissan 370Z, and though no technical details were present in this teaser footage, Carscoops suggests that the 370Zki could be a tracked vehicle, owing to its name. Beyond that, the 370Zki’s snow-traversing specification and appearance is left mostly to one’s imagination. In 2018-model year guise, the base production 370Z continues to be powered by a 3.7 litre naturally aspirated V6 engine, producing 332 hp and 366 Nm of torque. Transmission is to the rear wheels, via either a six-speed manual with downshift rev-matching or a seven-speed automatic. The sportier, 350 hp Nismo version also continues to soldier on for this model year. Concept the snow-tracking 370Zki may be, … [Read more...] about Nissan 370Zki concept teased for Chicago Auto Show
Concept cars are fun. While there isn’t a ton of futuristic models to check out at this year’s Detroit auto show, there are enough concepts to keep car and crossover geeks happy. Note to Ford—give us another Bronco concept already.First up for the funkiest concept goes to the Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept. The Q is a futuristic four-door, mid-size sedan that seems right at home on the set of a “Star Trek” flick. It’s much cleaner than the other concepts at the show and it was named “Best Concept Vehicle” and “Best Designed Interior” at NAIAS by EyesOn Design. The concept is powered by Infiniti’s VC-Turbo powertrain and offers next-level autonomous driving tech we are told. The white sedan looks all right to us—let hope they can deliver us one soon.Next is the Nissan Xmotion Concept—a small SUV that looks like a big Chunky candy bar with wheels. It also looks like one of Nissan’s “Star War” … [Read more...] about Three Cool Concepts from the 2018 Detroit Auto Show
Nissan has gone all in on crossovers, with its Pathfinder having migrated to a car-based platform, the Murano providing a more premium alternative, the compact Rogue selling like gangbusters, the slightly smaller Rogue Sport wedging in just below, and the newly introduced Kicks replacing the Juke in the tiny-ute space. Only the supersize Armada retains the traditional rear-drive-based SUV layout and demeanor. But as the brand looks ahead “to 2020 and beyond,” Nissan appears to be circling back toward that old-school SUV look—at least that’s the indication from the Xmotion concept. The Xmotion isn’t retro, but as its maker tells it, the concept “features strong hints of a traditional SUV—the high stance, high-utility proportions and bulked-up fenders stuffed with all-terrain-ready wheels and tires.” The utilitarian machismo is tempered with a Japanese appreciation for nature, seen particularly in the cabin’s materials and … [Read more...] about Nissan Xmotion Concept: Is This the Next Xterra?
