Kia has a lot to talk about at this year's CES, and one of the biggest announcements is the claimed range on its Niro EV concept. If the concept has any bearing on a future production Niro EV, it won't simply be a rebodied version of the Hyundai Ioniq EV, which has a 110-mile range. Instead, Kia says the Niro EV concept has a range of 238 miles. Those in the know with EVs will recognize that this is the very same range as the Chevy Bolt EV. The range comes from a 64 kWh battery pack, and it supplies power to a 150 kW electric motor, which equates to 201 horsepower. Again, that's a dead ringer for the Bolt EV, which makes 200 horsepower. If these numbers all translate to production, Kia will have a serious EV contender.Kia also made it clear that it's getting serious about electrified vehicles. It announced that by 2025, it will have 16 vehicles with some form of electrified powertrain. Of those vehicles, five will be new hybrids, another five will be plug-in hybrids, and one will be a … [Read more...] about Kia Niro EV concept claims 238 miles of range as Kia bets big on EVs, autonomy

Now, Kia is expanding the lineup with an EV. However, details about the Niro EV’s powertrain remain unknown.Kia’s other EV, the Ioniq packs a range of 124 miles thanks to its 28-kilowatt-hour battery. The Niro EV could have a larger battery, significantly extending the EV’s range, and besting the plug-in hybrid’s electric range of just 26 miles. So far, there are only teaser images available of the new Niro EV. From what little details are visible, it appears there are some changes to the design of the front and rear fascias, along with redesigned headlights. The overall design could … [Read more...] about Kia Niro EV to Debut at Consumer Electronics Show
Kia has released a few teaser images of its upcoming Niro EV SUV, which is expected to launch at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. How do we know it’s the Niro EV and not a futuristic design experiment? Well, it says so on the rear bumper. It also sports Niro-like design cues, but interestingly, the press release doesn’t call it the Niro EV by name. The Korean brand promises “cutting-edge vehicle interfaces, autonomous driving technologies and the world’s first in-car 5G connection.” It looks like the concept will be a technological tour-de-force, making its debut at CES very much appropriate. Powertrain details are unknown, but Kia’s sister company, Hyundai, offers an electric powertrain in its Ioniq hatchback and is preparing the Kona SUV for a similar treatment. Given the Niro and Kona compete in the same category, it’s likely we’ll see some form of the latter’s drive system in the Niro EV. The … [Read more...] about Kia Niro EV to break cover next week?
