The FIA has confirmed a change to its F1 governance structure, which will be in place in time for the start of the 2023 season. The FIA, governing body of Formula 1, has updated its management structure ahead of the 2023 season, following an increase in investment and resources into the sport from the governing body. Under President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and FIA Deputy President for Sport Robert Reid, a review of the FIA’s internal procedures has been carried out with a new overall structure being implemented to coincide with the beginning of the 2023 F1 season. Nikolas Tombazis, who was the FIA’s head of single-seater matters and oversaw the FIA’s technical department which helped bring about the 2022 regulation changes, has been appointed as the FIA’s single-seater director. The FIA has completed the restructuring of its Formula 1 governance team which began following the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The FIA created the position in response to the mishandling of the 2021 season finale by former race director Michael Masi . The creation of the sporting director role was one of several changes made by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who won election five days after the 2021 season ended in acrimony. He also introduced a new Remote Operations Centre to assist the race control team and replaced Masi with a pair of race directors supported by a permanent senior advisor. McLaren’s Zak Brown said Steve Nielsen “ticks all the boxes” after the F1 veteran moved to a senior role within the FIA. The sport’s governing body announced a shake-up to their management structure on Wednesday with the aim of fixing the sport’s race-management problems seen over the past few seasons. Previous head of single-seater matters Nikolas Tombazis was appointed as the FIA’s single-seater director while Nielsen left his role at F1 to become the FIA sporting director. Both figures are well known to those within the paddock and as such, team principals and CEOs have been providing their opinion on the latest FIA shake-up. Symonds to stay in F1 tech role for “a good while” after calling off retirement

At the end of 2021, it emerged that Symonds and F1 managing director Ross Brawn were both set to leave their roles at the end of the 2022 season once the new technical regulations had completed their first year. Listen to this article Nielsen, who has most recently worked for Formula One Management, has had a lengthy career in grand prix racing which included spells at Lotus, Tyrrell, Benetton and AlphaTauri. In his new role at the FIA, he will be responsible for all sporting matters, including the development of race control and the remote Operations Centre, as well as future updates to the sporting regulations.
