Williams will trial an updated aerodynamics package for the FW44 at the British Grand Prix, but only on Alex Albon’s car. After three successive seasons at the bottom of the log, Williams worked their way up to seventh in last year’s championship, the team scoring 23 points which was their biggest points haul since 2017. The team had hoped to build on that this season, benefitting from the new technical regulations with the all-new cars. Instead, Williams have once again found themselves last in the standings with just three points on the board . However, unlike many of their rivals, the Grove team has yet to introduce a major update – that coming at this weekend’s British Grand Prix. Bugatti enlisted former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya to set a a new speed record in its $2.7 million Chiron hypercar. Montoya, a seven-times grand prix winner and two-times winner of the Indianapolis 500, set a new world record by accelerating from a standstill up to 400kph and back to a stop again in 41.96 seconds, covering 3.1 kilometres. The car carried the number 42 which was the number used by Montoya during most of his time in NASCAR after leaving F1. “It really was incredible to see that you didn’t need the complex preparations we have to make in racing for the 0-400-0 drive,” said Montoya. “With the Chiron, it was all quite easy. Just get in and drive off. Incredible.” The 41-year-old also revealed he did not use a HANS device for the record-breaking run. A bizarre incident involving an ambulance almost cost a NASCAR driver a shot at the championship. Also last weekend two prominent F1 juniors enjoy successful weekends in their series and the DTM title battle closed up again. NASCAR Cup Race 26: Richmond Matt Kenseth was one of the 16 drivers to qualify for NASCAR’s title-deciding play-offs despite retiring from Saturday’s 300-mile race at Richmond after a strange incident involving an ambulance. The safety vehicle’s driver failed to stop when instructed during a caution period which forced several drivers to take avoiding action. They included Kenseth, who ran into the back of Clint Bowyer. Championship leader Martin Truex Jnr described the incident as “inexcusable”. Truex lost a healthy lead when another caution period was called with four laps to go in the race. Williams will bring an upgraded aerodynamic package for their home race this weekend, but it will only be available for one of the team’s two drivers. The FIA has approved a series of changes to Formula 1’s sporting and technical rules at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council today. Teams will also be permitted to replace power units with newer specification parts under parc ferme conditions between qualifying and the race. Another rules change has been made following a series of occasions on which teams nearly fell foul of maximum fuel temperature regulations. Teams will now be permitted to chill their fuel to 20C at races where particularly warm ambient temperatures are observed. Two deflection tests applied to the rear wings have been altered.
