Christian Horner has given an update as to how Daniel Ricciardo is getting on in his new role of third driver at Red Bull. For the first time since 2010, the sight of a smiling Ricciardo has not been present on the Formula 1 grid with the Australian driver taking a sabbatical in all but name as he fulfils a third driver role having returned to former team Red Bull. The 33-year-old has been clear that he still sees his future in the sport, suggesting he is aiming for a 2024 comeback, but for now he is enjoying life away from the pressures of the Formula 1 paddock. He is back in the paddock for this weekend though as the sport returns to Ricciardo’s native Australia and as such, the topic of the Honey Badger’s future has been a much-talked-about one. One man who has provided an update is Ricciardo’s boss Christian Horner who said he was “embracing this new role.” “It’s great to have him back in blue and be back in the team,” he said in Friday’s team boss press conference. … [Read more...] about Christian Horner gives Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull update: ‘10 minutes away from being ready’

Red Bull discovered “habits” Ricciardo picked up from other cars’ “limitations” · RaceFans
Daniel Ricciardo has made some telling changes to his driving style during the four years he spent away from Red Bull, according to team principal Christian Horner. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The eight-times grand prix winner has returned to the team he raced for between 2014 and 2018. Ricciardo spent two years at Renault (now Alpine) and two more at McLaren in the interim. His McLaren spell ended in disappointment, as the team cut short his contract by a year due to poor performance. Ricciardo subsequently agreed to return to Red Bull in a test and reserve driver role and has already returned to work in their simulator. The Australian driver is attending his country’s round of the world championship with the team. “It’s great to have him back in blue,” said Horner in today’s FIA press conference at the track. “This is the first grand prix he is attending this year,” Horner continued. “He’s really throwing himself into it, sitting in all the … [Read more...] about Red Bull discovered “habits” Ricciardo picked up from other cars’ “limitations” · RaceFans
Red Bull “didn’t recognise” Ricciardo’s F1 driving habits on return
Listen to this article Ricciardo had stepped away from a full-time race seat following the 2022 season, after he and McLaren agreed to part company in the wake of a frustrating two years. While the Australian had initially considered moving to another team, in the end he felt a year helping out as Red Bull's third driver would be a better bet for him. Red Bull plans to make use of Ricciardo for both reserve and testing duties throughout 2023, and for that it put him back in its simulator to get him back up to speed with the current car developments. But, having observed his driving, Red Bull has revealed that Ricciardo had picked up some bad habits in his time away from the squad at Renault and McLaren. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: "I think the problem is when you drive a car that obviously has its limitations, you adapt, and you try and adjust to extract the maximum out of that car. "It was clear when he came back that he picked up some habits … [Read more...] about Red Bull “didn’t recognise” Ricciardo’s F1 driving habits on return
McLaren are building a new wind tunnel, so why do they support banning them? · RaceFans
When asked why he had committed to McLaren – allegedly until end-2024 – by RaceFans during an interview in Monaco on Thursday, Lando Norris listed the team’s plans to build a new wind tunnel as one of “a combination of a few things over the past couple of years that we’ve done, but then also things that we have coming up in the future. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free “I guess having our own wind tunnel is one of the biggest things,” he continued, adding, it would be much easier for “the guys and girls who travel all the way to [Toyota’s facility in] Germany every time and go to the wind tunnel, spend time in isolation, there for three weeks, come back and spend time in isolation again and so on. We lose a lot of time compared to other teams who are able to do it a lot quicker.” Wind tunnels are extremely costly pieces of kit, not only to install but also to maintain and operate. A team is unlikely to obtain much change from $60 million (£42.4m) for a … [Read more...] about McLaren are building a new wind tunnel, so why do they support banning them? · RaceFans
Second qualifying session under consideration for F1’s Baku sprint round · RaceFans
Formula 1 is considering a change to the format of the first sprint race weekend of the year in Baku. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The series’ CEO Stefano Domenicali said earlier this week he wants more competitive sessions to take place during weekends. The sprint race format which was introduced at limited rounds in 2021 was one step towards achieving this. Under its current sprint weekend structure, F1 holds a qualifying session on Friday which sets the starting order for Saturday’s short race, which in turn decides the grid for the grand prix. However F1 is considering a revised format under which a second qualifying session would be held to decide the starting order for the sprint race. “In Baku we are talking about having a second qualifying in the moment,” Haas team principal Guenther Steiner explained. “We don’t know how we do it and if we do it.” One criticism of the sprint race format has been that it makes the second practice session on … [Read more...] about Second qualifying session under consideration for F1’s Baku sprint round · RaceFans
Horner surprised at FIA clampdown on “iconic” F1 team pitwall celebrations
Listen to this article Ahead of this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, as revealed by Motorsport.com , F1 race director Niels Wittich has reminded the teams that their staff scaling pitwall fences is outlawed under the FIA's International Sporting Code requirements and is subject to penalties. This constitutes a new clampdown on a long-standing tradition of F1 team members climbing up and leaning through pitwall fences to cheer home their cars achieving notable results. This is because, though it was already forbidden in the FIA's rules, it was not previously policed, until scenes of Red Bull and Aston Martin mechanics climbing high on the Jeddah pitwall fence last time out (as they also did in the Bahrain season opener) led to the governing body opting to act. It is understood to fear grave consequences should a person or object fall onto the track, or if a car sent debris towards the areas of concern. When asked for his reaction to the move by Motorsport.com in the … [Read more...] about Horner surprised at FIA clampdown on “iconic” F1 team pitwall celebrations
Fernando Alonso left with ‘jobs to do’ after FP2 running cut short by rain
Fernando Alonso is pleased that his Aston Martin seems to “behave well” around Albert Park, but a lack of laps left him with “jobs to do” in FP3 to prime himself for qualifying and the race this weekend. Alonso went fastest in a rain-interrupted FP2 session in Melbourne on Friday, with the wet weather hitting before the drivers put on soft tyres for their standard qualifying simulations could take place. This hampered the field for the most part, though the likes of rookie McLaren driver Oscar Piastri were able to experience intermediate tyres for the first time this season and, in the case of the new home hero in Australia, the first time in his Formula 1 career. But the rain was not much use to Alonso and Aston Martin, with the team looking to reel in Red Bull as best it can this weekend in dry conditions. As a result, the double World Champion said the team will be left with more to do in FP3 to get themselves in the right window come qualifying. “It was good, obviously … [Read more...] about Fernando Alonso left with ‘jobs to do’ after FP2 running cut short by rain
Pierre Gasly believes Alpine can catch top four despite ‘war zone’ in Melbourne
Pierre Gasly said the target for Alpine in Melbourne is to close the gap between themselves and the current top four. After two races, the French outfit have emerged in a bit of a no man’s land where they have the pace to keep the final five teams behind them but not enough to catch Red Bull, Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari up ahead. But for a team with ambitions to solidify their P4 spot, Alpine will be pushing to move closer to the cars ahead and new recruit Gasly was confident they could do that this weekend in Melbourne. Despite a truncated day with plenty of instances of high traffic, something Gasly described as like a “war zone”, the Frenchman said the goal was to close the gap between themselves and the frontrunners. “I think it’s been a good day overall,” he told F1.com. “For sure not an easy one wwithas the conditions changing throughout, pretty messy with the traffic, [it] was like a war zone this morning in the last sector trying to get through the traffic. … [Read more...] about Pierre Gasly believes Alpine can catch top four despite ‘war zone’ in Melbourne
Pictures: 2023 Australian Grand Prix F1 car updates · RaceFans
Seven of the 10 Formula 1 teams have brought updates to their cars for this weekend’s race. However as they are far away from their European bases, and racing on a temporary circuit where the risk of damage is high, most of the revisions are on the modest side. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Red Bull have brought a mildly revised front wing which is intended to increase downforce, which the team identified as a requirement for upcoming races. They have also made a revision to the floor bodywork around the rear wheels to improve cooling around the inlets for the brake ducts. Their three closest rivals have lagged far behind in terms of performance so far this year, and none of brought alterations on the scale needed to cut that deficit. Indeed, Ferrari and Aston Martin’s cars are unchanged, and Mercedes have introduced a single revision to the underside of their floor. The addition of vanes is intended to improve airflow to the diffuser further … [Read more...] about Pictures: 2023 Australian Grand Prix F1 car updates · RaceFans
