Oil Prices And Subsidies (An Explanation)
I found this article on the National Economic Action Council’s website on why the oil prices have been increasing and why the government cannot continue subsidising our fuel, as well as why Petronas cannot take up responsibility to use it’s profits to subsidise fuel. What do you think? Article is after the jump. Why has the price of fuel on the international market increased recently? Since mid-2004, the price of crude oil has increased substantially on the world market. For example, the West Texas Intermediate (a reference price used in the United States and globally) increased from US$19 per barrel in 1993 to US$31 in 2003. In October 2004, it reached US$51 and in 2005 it went up to US$67 per barrel. The main causes for these increases are: The existence of a tight market due to the small margin between production (83.0 million barrels per day(bpd)) and demand (82.5 million bpd) High demand for oil by China, India and the United States Uncertainly of supply in some OPEC … [Read more...] about Oil Prices And Subsidies (An Explanation)
The 2017 Power List – And the Person of the Year Is…
Introduced in 2005, the Motor Trend Power List recognizes those who have most made a difference in the automotive industry during the previous year. These are the people who have helped create, engineer, and market the cars, trucks, and SUVs we love to drive, the people who have entertained us, engaged us, and, yes, sometimes enraged us. We recognized that, inevitably, automaker CEOs tended to hog the upper echelons of the list. So we changed things up a little last year, reworking the top 10 places to recognize those who have had the most impact on the industry over the past 12 months in terms of design, engineering, brand development, performance, product development, and overall company management. And because this fascinating industry never stops evolving, we’ve nominated our top disrupter, outsider, and futurist, too. At the top of our list is our Person of the Year, the individual we believe has had the most impact on the industry during the year. Perhaps because the … [Read more...] about The 2017 Power List – And the Person of the Year Is…

Australia to build superhighway for EVs beside Great Barrier Reef
MELBOURNE - Australia is building a superhighway offering free charging stations in a bid to boost use of electric vehicles, the northeastern state of Queensland said on Thursday, most of its route fringed by the Great Barrier Reef tourist attraction. The move comes as governments around the world regulate to cut emissions by boosting the use of electric vehicles.Britain this week said it would ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2040, following France. The mayors of Paris, Madrid, Mexico City and Athens have said they plan to ban diesel vehicles from city centers by 2025.Australia's new superhighway, an 1,800-km (1,118-mile) stretch of mostly coastal road alongside the Great Barrier Reef, will be supplied by renewable energy, State Minister Steven Miles said in a statement."This project is ambitious, but we want as many people as possible on board the electric vehicle revolution, as part of our transition to a low-emissions future," he added.Eighteen towns and cities will … [Read more...] about Australia to build superhighway for EVs beside Great Barrier Reef
Audi chief says 2012 tough year for auto industry
The automotive industry faces a tougher year in 2012 than it has done this year, Audi Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rupert Stadler told Reuters in an interview for release on Sunday.“But this should not be a reason to fall into pessimism,” he said, adding that the automotive industry would continue to grow over the next 10 years thanks to the enormous appetite for mobility among people in developing economies.Stadler also denied speculation in the German media that he might be a successor for Audi parent Volkswagen’s CEO, Martin Winterkorn, when he steps down at the end of 2016. He said he expected China’s automotive market to grow eight to nine per cent, with its premium segment expanding 20 per cent or even 30 per cent, though he did not give a timeframe.Audi is the market leader in the luxury segment in China, well ahead of German rivals BMW and Daimler AG’s Mercedes.Stadler, who has set a goal of making Audi the world’s top premium car … [Read more...] about Audi chief says 2012 tough year for auto industry
Free-Trade Cars: Why a U.S.–Europe Free-Trade Agreement Is a Good Idea
From the August 2013 Issue of Car and Driver Without launching into a Ben Stein–like dissertation on economics, we find it important to note that President Obama’s March announcement of the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is hugely important to the car industry and to car enthusiasts. The Partnership’s aims include abolishing tariffs on imported cars, as well as finally aligning U.S. and European automotive safety and environmental standards. If adopted, the agreement could result in increased manufacturing here by European brands and American dealers stocking a broader product lineup. It may even bring back brands that have been exiled from these shores for decades. The standard tariff for importing cars to the U.S. is 2.5 percent of their value. For pickup trucks and commercial vans, the tariff is a whopping 25 percent. Individual European countries don’t charge import duties, but the European Union charges a … [Read more...] about Free-Trade Cars: Why a U.S.–Europe Free-Trade Agreement Is a Good Idea
U.S. & Euro Automakers Lobby Free-Trade Pact Negotiators to Harmonize Safety Regs
Automakers and auto enthusiasts alike aren’t fond of the differing safety standards in Europe and the United States. Having to satisfy two different standards means increased costs for car companies that want to compete on a global scale and it also means that car enthusiasts on both continents are often deprived of desirable cars on sale in the other market. But according to Automotive News, lobbyists for automakers in the U.S. and Europe are hoping to use current negotiations over a free-trade agreement to harmonize safety standards and they are using academics to make their argument. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, a Washington D.C. trade group representing both domestic and international automakers, the American Automotive Policy Council, and the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association have commissioned the Transportation Research Institute of the University of Michigan and SAFER, a similar research group at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, to … [Read more...] about U.S. & Euro Automakers Lobby Free-Trade Pact Negotiators to Harmonize Safety Regs
American Automotive Groups Are Formally Siding Against U.S. NAFTA Proposals
When Donald Trump took office, one of his first presidential acts was to rally domestic automakers for a series of meetings and promise to remove regulatory barriers. As the administration was a self-described ally to the car industry, the claim appeared genuine. There was some tough talk about foreign involvement but, for the most part, Trump appeared to be in domestic manufacturers’ corner. As focus shifted toward the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, automakers had one request: to not impede cross-border trade. It was their primary concern leading up to this week’s talks. Two days later and the issue has become a major sticking point; placing auto industry groups from Canada, Mexico, and the United States at odds with the current administration. As NAFTA talks began in Washington, D.C., automaker and parts groups from all three countries began outright pleading with U.S. negotiators to abandon their push for tighter rules of origin. … [Read more...] about American Automotive Groups Are Formally Siding Against U.S. NAFTA Proposals
