A couple weeks back we got to see the new 2020 Toyota Supra’s BMW B58 straight six engine decoded, and pointed out that while this is a high-level sports car for Toyota, it was getting a mid-level engine from BMW. Well, now here’s the high-level version of that motor—the M division’s S58, good for more than 500 horsepower bone stock. The engine made its debut last night not in a sports car or even a sports sedan but locked away in the globular cages of the BMW X3 and X4 Ms. I’m sure this brings great ire to Supra fans already. Sweat stings their eyes as they read this. Their smart, cultured Supras are making 335 HP stock, while crude, uncultured performance SUVs are doing hard pulls out of strip mall parking lots with an M version of their engine. In any case, let’s get into the specs of the new S58B30T0, the first new M Division straight six in half a decade, as BMWBlog points out. If you’re curious where I’m getting these specs … [Read more...] about BMW’s New 500-HP S58 Inline-Six Should be Very Interesting to Supra Fans

John McCormick Special to The Detroit News Published 4:00 p.m. UTC Jun 14, 2018 Hyundai chose downtown Detroit to highlight its latest models, the new Kona and Veloster urban cars. Going from the hip Foundation Hotel via bustling Campus Martius Park to the flourishing Wayne State area, Hyundai’s tour highlighted Motown’s ongoing revitalization. With pricing in the $19,000 to $28,000 range, both the Kona and Veloster are aimed at young, active consumers, much like the people fueling Detroit’s comeback. The 2018 Kona is Hyundai’s first stab at a small crossover, a relatively new market sector that’s growing by leaps and bounds. “This segment is up by 16 percent,” said Mike O’Brien, Hyundai vice president of product planning. “It is the Wild West in terms of vehicle specification because automakers are still feeling their way into the segment.” While small sedan competitors are all sized virtually identically, the small … [Read more...] about Car Culture: New, revamped Hyundais have hip ambitions
The 2018 Fiat 500 now features dramatically more standard horsepower than ever before. The Fiat 500 hatch and Cabrio models have been given a Turbocharged MultiAir engine that produces 135 hp compared to previous year's normally aspirated engine that put out 101 hp. This 34 hp increase means the already peppy 500 now has the most horsepower in its class. To put it mildly, the new car is going to rip. It should be noted that the engine is identical to the one used in the high performance, 160 hp Abarth models, but is detuned for more relaxed driving. To cope with the additional 34 percent more power, the 500's transmission, suspension and brakes are also borrowed from the Abarth. Suspension calibrations while sporty and well controlled are not as aggressive as the Abarth's and don't utilize that model's rear anti-sway bar. 2018 Fiat 500 Revealed! Not counting the Abarth model (which is technically considered a different brand in the rest of the world) the 2018 Fiat 500 lineup … [Read more...] about 2018 Fiat 500 Urbana Details
