Austin city manager fired over city power outages caused by freeze
Austin City Council voted 10-1 Wednesday in favor of firing City Manager Spencer Cronk following a review of the city's botched response to freezing rain that crippled Travis County and swathes of central Texas in February. Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison was the lone "no" vote. The aforementioned winter storm knocked out power for more than 170,000 in the Austin area , according to an AP report, and Wednesday's vote came as a rebuke to city management that has been roundly criticized for the city's slow recovery of utilities in the days following the freeze. Cronk's firing marks the first ouster of a city executive in connection to February's outages. The former city coordinator of Minneapolis, Cronk took over as Austin city manager in 2018 and as recently as January received endorsements of confidence from Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, according to The Texas Tribune.
