(AP) — Republicans who are seeking to lead their party in the 2024 presidential race are gathering in South Carolina this weekend with a goal at the forefront of their agenda: taking on “woke ideology.” On Saturday in North Charleston, Palmetto Family, which lobbies for what it considers to be “biblical values," is hosting Vision ’24, described by organizers as “casting the conservative vision" for the next White House race. More than 400 attendees are expected to hear from presidential hopefuls, including Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor who was Donald Trump's U.N. ambassador, and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Organizers expect issues such as gas prices and national security to get plenty of attention. But there also is an expectation that much of the focus will be on the pushback by some across the U.S. against what they perceive as affronts … [Read more...] about Haley, Ramaswamy among those taking on ‘woke ideology’ in SC

House GOP gave Jan. 6 footage to Carlson without telling Capitol Police, lawyer says

March 17, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON - U.S. Capitol Police learned from the media that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had provided access to security footage of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot to television personality Tucker Carlson, and the police then were shown just one of about 40 clips before Carlson aired them earlier this month, the police department's lawyer said in an affidavit Friday. The police had asked House Republicans to let them review every clip that would be made public for security reasons, Capitol Police general counsel Thomas DiBiase said in the six-page declaration. But DiBiase said he viewed only a single clip. McCarthy (R-Calif.) gave Carlson exclusive access to roughly 40,000 hours of video, something Carlson had suggested as a condition of his support for McCarthy's long bid to win the speakership in January. Carlson has played down the deadly violence that occurred that day and claimed it was a "false flag" operation. The police department did not learn about it until Feb. 20, … [Read more...] about House GOP gave Jan. 6 footage to Carlson without telling Capitol Police, lawyer says

But it was nowhere near enough to pay the $5,950-a-month bill at Doug's assisted-living facility. So last year, Roper, 65, abandoned her own plans to retire. To the public school librarian from Poquoson, Va., it feels like a betrayal of a social contract. Doug Roper, a longtime high school history teacher and wrestling coach, has a pension and Social Security. The Ropers own a home; they have savings. Yet the expense of Doug's residential Alzheimer's care poses a grave threat to their middle-class nest egg. At nearly $72,000, a year in assisted living for Doug, 67, costs more than her $64,000 annual salary. "It's devastating," she said. "You can't wrap your head around it." A wave of Americans has been reaching retirement age largely … [Read more...] about Senior care is crushingly expensive. Boomers aren’t ready.

Presidential primary in CT would be held April 2 if bill passes

March 20, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

While it may not be uncommon for both political parties to find temporary moments of agreement in Hartford, it’s certainly a bizarre sight to see the state’s Republican and Democratic brass sitting side-by-side at the State Capital, voicing complete harmony on one issue. Such a moment occurred Monday, as Democratic Party Chair Nancy DiNardo sat alongside her GOP counterpart, Ben Proto, to advocate for a bill to move the state’s presidential primary contest up from the last Tuesday in April to the first. The move would place Connecticut slightly higher in the middle of the next year’s presidential primary schedul e, joining Wisconsin on April 2. The bill would not impact the timing of primaries for other state and federal offices, which are typically held in August. With a date in early April, Connecticut could also potentially leapfrog the states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island on the nominating calendar . (Each state still has several months to try … [Read more...] about Presidential primary in CT would be held April 2 if bill passes

China threatens retaliation if Tsai and McCarthy meet

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 BEIJING (AP) — China has threatened “resolute countermeasures” over a planned meeting between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Speaker of the United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during an upcoming visit in Los Angeles by the head of the self-governing island democracy. Diplomatic pressure against Taiwan has ramped up recently, with Beijing poaching Taipei's dwindling number of diplomatic allies while also sending military fighter jets flying toward the island on a near daily basis. Earlier this month, Honduras established diplomatic relations with China, leaving Taiwan with only 13 countries that recognize it as a sovereign state. Tsai framed the trip as a chance to show Taiwan’s commitment to democratic values on the world stage, as she left Taiwan Wednesday afternoon to begin her 10-day tour of the Americas. “I … [Read more...] about China threatens retaliation if Tsai and McCarthy meet

‘No person is above the law’: Connecticut state leaders react to word of Trump’s indictment

March 30, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

The historic news of a pending indictment against a former president, Donald J. Trump, blew swiftly into Connecticut on Thursday evening after a grand jury in Manhattan voted to move forward with criminal charges in an alleged hush-money scheme. One of the first statements to emerge from the state’s elected leadership came from U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat who served for two decades as the state’s attorney general, and who has his own acrimonious history with the former president. “No person is above the law — and violations should be pursued no matter how powerful the person is,” Blumenthal said. “Our justice system has an obligation to pursue the facts and law wherever they lead. Former President Trump will have the same rights as any criminal defendant and the justice system will presume him innocent until proven guilty.” In a sprawling statement posted to his own website, Trump dismissed the reported charges as “political persecution” and a “witch hunt,” … [Read more...] about ‘No person is above the law’: Connecticut state leaders react to word of Trump’s indictment

Trump is indicted in N.Y. Here’s what it means and what happens next.

March 30, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Former president Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, becoming the first person in U.S. history to serve as commander in chief and then be charged with a crime. The indictment remains under seal, so the specific charge or charges have not been made public. Here is what we know so far about the charging decision and the next steps in the criminal proceedings: - - - What is an indictment? When someone is indicted by a grand jury, it means they are charged with one or more crimes. "An indictment is just a fancy way of saying 'the charging document,'" said Anna G. Cominsky, a professor at New York Law School. "It is a piece of paper that contains the charges." The grand jury, which in New York is composed of 23 members of the public, hears evidence from witnesses presented by prosecutors over a period of days, weeks or months. At the end of that process, prosecutors decide whether to ask the jurors to vote on an indictment. A majority must vote to indict … [Read more...] about Trump is indicted in N.Y. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 CHICAGO (AP) — Before they were rivals to be Chicago’s next mayor, Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson both worked in education, though their career paths — like their views on the city's future — were very different. Vallas was CEO of Chicago Public Schools, appointed by then-Mayor Richard M. Daley after Illinois lawmakers in the 1990s gave control of the troubled district to City Hall. Vallas came to be known as a turnaround expert in Chicago and in other U.S. school districts, supporting charter schools and voucher programs. Johnson taught middle and high schoolers before becoming an organizer for the Chicago Teachers Union, mobilizing thousands during a historic 2012 strike and in actions since that focused on strengthening public schools and the communities around them. It is just one example, but a significant one, of the contrasts between … [Read more...] about In Chicago mayor’s race, 2 hopefuls reflect Democrats’ split
