SAUSALITO, California—The heart of the dearly departed Ford Focus RS lives on here in the U.S. market, in the form of the 2020 Mustang 2.3-Liter High Performance Package—and it still beats like that of a race horse: Te amo! Ford sold more than 113,000 Mustangs globally last year and today there are nine different models to choose from—from a more affordable base 100a-package model up to, soon, the top-shelf Shelby GT500. The package at the heart of this story is available on Mustang EcoBoost coupes and convertibles and adds $4,995 to the sticker. There are also four new shades offered for 2020: Grabber Lime, Iconic Silver, Red Hot Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, and Twister Orange. Under the hood, the 2.3-Liter High Performance Package adds the Focus RS's sublime inline-four engine built in Valencia, Spain. The former hot-hatch powerplant is flipped 90 degrees to fit in the rear-drive pony car, and underwent several other revisions for this application. During Ford’s product presentation, held just north of the famed Golden Gate bridge on a chilly Bay Area morning in September, one of the men who worked on the 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package trotted out a not unexpected comparison. He brought up the old LX trim available on Fox-body Mustangs of yore, and compared today’s four-cylinder Mustang to that model. It’s not the world’s worst comparison, although the LX back then was available with the same renowned 5.0-liter (yes, I know it that it’s really a 4.9) V8 that was under the hood of the GT. The LX’s claim to fame was that it was lighter, cheaper, and perhaps less expensive to insure, while still offering V8 power and a five-speed stick. That’s why your author bought a used ’89 example in the late 1990s. As someone who owned that LX Fox body for five years, I sniggered a bit, since the Mustang parked in front of us had just half the cylinder count, but of course … [Read more...] about 2020 Ford Mustang Ecoboost High Performance Package First Drive
The EcoBoost range gets a humongous boost with the 2019 New York Auto Show debut of the Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance variant which churns out 330 hp of power. Remember that entry-level performance Mustang that we were talking about a few days ago? Well, the 2019 New York Auto Show witnessed the debut of that car – the Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance – and it’s going to make fans of the “affordable” Mustang range very happy. The High Performance Package adds all the necessary mods needed to make the otherwise tamer 4-cylinder-propelled Mustang EcoBoost a firecracker. The major highlight is of course that 2.3-liter detuned engine borrowed from the Ford Focus RS. Put together in Valencia, Spain and then shipped to Flat Rock so that it can nestle comfortably inside the engine bay of the 2020 model year Mustang, the engine boasts of a redesigned turbocharger. Ford has adjusted the power output in quite an interesting manner. The same unit … [Read more...] about 2019 New York Auto Show: 330 HP Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance Package

DON’T tell my doctor, but I stopped in at McDonald’s the other day to grab some lunch. I was in the queue, figuring out whether to get a cheese burger chaser for my Big Mac meal, when I tuned into the woman ordering at the counter in front of me. It went like this: “I’ll have a large Quarter Pounder meal, nine chicken nuggets, a hamburger and an Oreo McFlurry.” The dead-behind-the-eyes teenager serving her asked: “And is that Coke with the Quarter Pounder meal?” This woman looked at him, disgusted: “No, Diet Coke.” I’ve done the maths on her order — 1,900 calories and 88 grams of fat. Sorry love, but the battle was lost long ago — washing down that mountain of beige food with a sugar-free drink is too little too late. Some people reckon the Ford Mustang EcoBoost is, in some ways, the car equivalent of ordering a Diet Coke with a McDonald’s. To them, an American muscle car should be bought as a full-fat V8, or … [Read more...] about The Ford Mustang Ecoboost is like ordering a Big Mac… with a Diet Coke chaser
