Vowles: I won’t turn Williams into a ‘mini-Mercedes’ F1 team

January 13, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Williams announced on Friday that Vowles would be leaving his role as Mercedes ’ strategy director to become its new F1 team principal after Jost Capito’s departure in December. Vowles will join a Williams team looking to bounce back from finishing last in the 2022 constructors’ championship, spending most of the season with the slowest car. He has been a key part of Toto Wolff’s senior management team at Mercedes, playing a significant role in its success throughout the V6 hybrid era. Williams is a Mercedes F1 customer team, receiving an engine and gearbox supply. It also gave George Russell , a Mercedes junior driver, his F1 debut in 2019 and helped his development for three years before joining Mercedes. But Vowles said his move would not mark an extension of the ties between the two operations, even if there was a need to focus on similar areas like team culture. “I wouldn't consider it a mini-Mercedes,” said Vowles. "Williams is an … [Read more...] about Vowles: I won’t turn Williams into a ‘mini-Mercedes’ F1 team

January 14, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

Who isn’t envious of Formula 1 drivers? Bravery, stunning ability, physical supremacy and gold-plated glamour make the likes of Lewis Hamilton categorical superstars. They are paid for putting their lives on the line in would-be death machines for our entertainment. Their salary is often as mind-blowing as street circuit top-speeds. F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport for prestige but other series are just as demanding. Championships like NASCAR and IndyCar require similar levels of courage and honed craft, but how does the lifestyle of their drivers live up to that of F1’s feted stars? Based on estimates from the 2022 season, let’s compare the pay packet a talented racer can expect stepping into Formula 1, IndyCar or NASCAR. F1 salaries – $11.4 million average (£9.4m) F1 drivers are the highest-paid athletes in motorsports, taking home $11.4 million on average across all 20 drivers on the 2022 grid – a figure set to slightly reduce this year with high-earners Sebastian Vettel … [Read more...] about Which drivers are paid the most? Formula One goes on economy drive "But what drove me to distraction was all this one-stop strategy, two-stop strategy business and the times when positions only changed when someone stopped at the garage. This virtual overtaking didn't make for satisfactory sport." Early deetails of 2009 BBC F1 coverage "I have also managed to get a quick look at a (very) provisional Grand Prix Night schedule full of holes, but it gives us a general idea of what is happening:" Sidepodtour Heads North to Grove "We were treated to a lesson in ground effects, saw the six-wheeled FW08B up close and decided that the more modern BMW powered machines were by far the best looking of the lot." Tata Enters the Game "We bemoan (quite rightly) the fact that the traditional circuits of Europe and North America are gradually being phased out of the sport in favor of new tracks in developing nations; but let us not forget that the auto industry has already shifted its center of gravity to … [Read more...] about F1 links: Provisional BBC F1 schedule · RaceFans

Second Driver of the Weekend win for Rosberg · RaceFans

October 17, 2016 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Nico Rosberg was voted Driver of the Weekend for the second time in three races after his victory in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver took over half the votes after winning the race from pole position and moving a step closer to clinching the world championship. Nico Rosberg’s Japanese Grand Prix For the third year running Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton to pole position at Suzuka. But crucially, this time he beat his team mate to victory too. That came about partly because of Hamilton’s slow getaway from the lights. But Rosberg consistently had the beating of the world cbampion throughout practice and qualifying too. Despite Hamilton stating this isn’t a strong track of his, I think it’s more that it is just a strong track of his teammates. It was narrow in qualifying, but faster is faster, and in the race Rosberg just had it in the bag. He had speed on tap at the start to open a gap and brought it home only as quickly as he needed to. No other driver did … [Read more...] about Second Driver of the Weekend win for Rosberg · RaceFans

2002 to 2012: Ten ways F1 has improved in ten years · RaceFans

June 14, 2012 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

The standard of racing in Formula One has been a hotly-debated subject for several years. Those who write the rules need to satisfy often contradictory demands. Such as embracing high technology, yet controlling costs. Or, providing an exciting spectacle – but one which is also safe. This has led to changes in how tracks and cars are designed, and provoked the introduction of technologies such as KERS and DRS, not to mention the current generation of tyres. The merits of these individual changes have provoked considerable debate, not least on this website. But if we take them all together, and look at the big picture, F1 seems increasingly to be getting it right. Turning back the clock ten years, we had a one-sided championship, dreary races and a shrinking grid. Here’s how F1 has improved since then. Slick tyres 2002: Grooved tyres In an attempt to cut cornering speeds and improve safety, grooves were added to F1 tyres in 1998. How successful the experiment was can be … [Read more...] about 2002 to 2012: Ten ways F1 has improved in ten years · RaceFans

More Than Equal aims to offer females a shot into F1 within 10 years

November 21, 2022 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Motorsport is constantly evolving and is one of the only types of sports where both males and females can compete against each other on equal terms. Today females have become more visible in the racing world but the challenges they continue to face keep preventing them from competing at the top tier of racing, especially in F1. And while motorsport as a whole continues to make progress forward with female representation, F1 which is considered to be the pinnacle of racing is one of the only major series that doesn't have a woman driver competing at the world championship level. While the world advances, women prove that they can succeed in the same positions as men- they are astronauts, in the military, and global leaders, yet they can't get a seat in F1. And because of the current state that F1 is in with its lack of female drivers and prospects in the near future, providing extra support for women and young girls throughout their racing careers is … [Read more...] about More Than Equal aims to offer females a shot into F1 within 10 years

Ferrari urged ‘to change things in the right way and quickly’ by former driver

January 18, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

As Ferrari look ahead to a new era under Fred Vasseur, Felipe Massa has warned the Frenchman that he has to make changes but that he must do it in the “right way”. Last season Ferrari took their first steps into Formula 1’s new era of ground effect aerodynamic cars with two wins in the first three races. Flags went up outside the Maranello headquarters and the Tifosi dusted off a spot on the mantelpiece for the Drivers’ Championship title. And then it fell to pieces. Blighted by reliability issues, most notably with the engine, strategy errors also began to creep into Ferrari’s game. It meant both drivers were out of the championship race when Charles Leclerc crashed in France, team boss Mattia Binotto’s comments about winning every one of the last 10 races failing to yield even one win. Binotto paid the price, handing in his resignation after the season, with Ferrari announcing Alfa Romeo team boss Vasseur as his replacement. Vasseur has a few pressing jobs to do according … [Read more...] about Ferrari urged ‘to change things in the right way and quickly’ by former driver
