Volkswagen started making the Golf back in 1974. Fast forward to present day, and they’re already working on the eighth generation, which will arrive next year. But one doesn’t necessarily have to own one of the modern Golfs with the GTI or R badge to have a lot of fun behind the wheel, because a tuned older model can offer way more thrills if you’re prepared to spend an extra buck. The videos below depict a Volkswagen Golf from the Mk2 generation, which has been tuned to the extreme. It allegedly has some 1,300 horsepower to play with, from a turbocharged powertrain of undisclosed specs, and an all-wheel drive system. We’ve recently shared quite a few stories involving several heavily modified old Volkswagen Golfs. But this one tops them all. The second-generation hatchback in question is the work of Boba Motoring, and some of you many remember the car from previous videos. Back then, this Volkswagen Golf Mk2 had 1,233 horses and 1,094Nm (807lb-ft) of torque produced by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. With the help of all-wheel drive, it needed just 2.53sec for the 0-100km/h (0-62mph) sprint, while the quarter mile was completed in just 8.69 seconds, at 273km/h (170mph). Drag racing enthusiasts know that whenever a tuned old car lines up at the start line alongside a supercar, the outcome is unpredictable. And for good reason, as owners of these older cars spend a small fortune in making them as fast as possible, oftentimes without tampering with the exterior design too much. This is how sleepers, true wolves in sheep’s clothing, are born. The internet has made these drag races seem almost common. But when you’re surfing on YouTube and see the words ‘VW Golf 2‘, ‘Nissan GT-R‘ and ‘drag race’ used in the same sentence, it’s hard to resist pushing the Play button. And so have we, only to find a heavily tuned compact hot hatch that has more power than, say… a Lamborghini Aventador. Once upon a time, Volkswagen was among the few automakers offering a proper compact hot hatch: the popular Golf GTI. Eventually, other companies started chasing this sector, and we now have a multitude of hatchbacks with powerful engines and good driving dynamics to choose from. One of the newcomers is the Hyundai i30 N. It’s the Korean brand’s first-ever hot hatch and it uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, with 250PS (246hp / 184kW) or 275PS (271hp / 202kW). It takes 6.4sec or 6.1sec, respectively, to sprint to 100km/h (62mph). I was greeted by a dented, patchy and faded car which was pretty much as per the advert. It was obvious someone had been trying to look after it at some point in its life, there were lots of new mechanical bits and some questionable body touch-up repairs. Either way it was now mine, and I had to make the trip back to my storage place. Remarkably it drove great, with only the smells of the neglected interior to bother me the whole way back. In fact, I was so pleased with it, I decided then and there it had to be saved. And thus begun my restoration of a … [Read more...] about VW Golf GTI Mk2: PH Carpool
