On a down-at-the-heels strip of Telephone Road off the East End's Harrisburg corridor, the Tlaquepaque Marketplace bursts into view like an exotic flower in the desert. Colors assault the eyes: Dusty orange, bright fuchsia, turquoise — all the hues favored by Mexican villages and startling against the sleek downtown skyline that looms to the west. Built in Mexican Colonial style, the marketplace is the vision of Bolivian-born architect Julio del Carpio , whose projects are part of an ongoing renaissance in this historic but gritty community. A crackhouse until recently stood across the way. Now a snow-cone vendor occupies the cleared but shaggy lot. Improvements come in increments. "I believe in grabbing old buildings that most people would probably demolish and making something original out of them," del Carpio says. In the 2000 Census, Hispanics surpassed whites and blacks to become the dominant population group in Houston. But while more than 38 percent of city … [Read more...] about Tlaquepaque Marketplace revamps East End

Hazelwood reflects on maiden Gen3 test
Listen to this article Blanchard Racing Team made Supercars history at Winton today by becoming the first team to shake down its Gen3 race car . The CoolDrive-backed Mustang cut its first laps with team co-owner Tim Blanchard behind the wheel this morning, before new signing Hazelwood took over the rest of the day. According to Hazelwood his starring role in the test came with an unexpected level of pressure given all eyes were on the BRT Ford. That was combined with it being this first day on the job with the single-car team since his off-season move from Matt Stone Racing. Given the attention on the car, Hazelwood was thrilled to finish a full day without any major issues. "It was a weird pressure that I didn't anticipate, to be honest," he told Motorsport.com. "You know, when it's your first day with the team you always want to do the best job possible. And for me it was the first time I had ever had a brand new chassis at my disposal. "So you've got the … [Read more...] about Hazelwood reflects on maiden Gen3 test
Texas set to execute Wesley Ruiz despite ongoing fight over state’s use of old lethal injection drugs
On Wednesday evening, Texas plans to execute Wesley Ruiz despite the ongoing controversy surrounding the state’s use of drugs long past their original expiration dates to kill prisoners. Ruiz, 43, was sentenced to death nearly 15 years ago for the 2007 shooting of Dallas police Senior Cpl. Mark Nix following a high-speed car chase. The chase began while police were searching for a murder suspect, according to court documents. Ruiz’s car eventually slid off the side of the road, and Nix rushed over and began smashing the passenger side window with his police baton. Ruiz fatally shot him in the chest through the back passenger window, court filings state. In an active legal battle, Ruiz and other condemned prisoners have argued the state prison system should not be allowed to continue extending the expiration dates of its execution drugs. They claim the use of old drugs violates the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. See Chevrolet Corvette C8 Get Built In Detailed Assembly Line Video
For upwards of 40 years, Bowling Green, Kentucky has been the birthplace of new Chevrolet Corvettes. The facility started with the then-new 1984 C4 Corvette, and it continues today with C8 assembly. Much of the plant was upgraded to make that happen, which is mentioned along with other interesting Corvette details in a new 42-minute feature from savagegeese on YouTube. Through this video, we learn that Corvette production is quite different from other Chevrolet vehicles and not just because the engine is behind the driver. For example, the process begins with individual body panels getting painted right away, then sent off for assembly sometime later. While this is happening, the aluminum tub is manufactured (technically it's the only Corvette component manufactured at the plant – everything else is merely assembled). The tub goes to the trim department where the interior, glass, and similar items are fitted. Austin Moto3: Oettl tops rain-affected qualifying
Listen to this article Oettl, contesting his fourth full season in Moto3, posted the benchmark in the opening minutes of the session and could subsequently sit back and relax as raindrops did the rest of the job. With damp patches on the track surface at the start of the session after rain had arrived late during Moto2 practice, a number riders opted to do their recon laps on wets. But the track was more than good enough for the dry compound right away, Oettl setting the early pace on slicks. The German continued to gradually improve with each lap, holding on to the top spot by halfway into the session, at which point the rain suddenly returned. As the rain flags made their appearance, Estrella Galicia's practice pacesetter Jorge Navarro was among the last riders to improve, moving to within six tenths of Oettl and just 0.011s ahead of fellow Honda rider Enea Bastianini. Just as quickly as the rain arrived, it was gone again. With 10 minutes to go, riders began to … [Read more...] about Austin Moto3: Oettl tops rain-affected qualifying

It’s apocalypse now—or is it?—in M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Knock at the Cabin’
It's a bad joke and a bum rap that M. Night Shyamalan is often confused for a mere merchant of cheap twists, a multiplex O. Henry. Still, there's no denying that a desire to blow minds, to leave audiences reeling from a last-minute reversal, remains baked into his artistry, several decades removed from The Sixth Sense , the movie that made his career and his reputation as a relentless rug-puller. Call it the Rod Serling in him. Knock at the Cabin , Shyamalan's latest trip to the Twilight Zone, has a slightly different alchemy. In this claustrophobic high-concept thriller, the possibility of a big climatic reveal isn't lurking somewhere in the background like a twist waiting to happen, implied by dint of the name on the byline. No, here it's an open threat for audiences and characters alike—one scary possibility of only two on the horizon. In that sense, Shyamalan has privileged suspense over surprise this time, wresting control, Split style, from his inner Serling and … [Read more...] about It’s apocalypse now—or is it?—in M.
