The third-gen (New) Mini goes a bit Rule, Britannia for its first major update. We drive the five-door Cooper S to find out whether that’s a good thing... or will buyers need to adopt a stiff upper lip? Anglo-German relations are a bit tense with all the Brexit shenanigans going on right now. Thankfully, none of the painful politicking is having an adverse effect on the British-built, BMW-engineered Mini range. To prove it, Munich has approved more flag-waving – quite literally – for the brand it acquired from its Rover-ownership mess in 2000.The 2018 Mini Cooper features new Union Jack LED tail-lights – optional on the base Cooper and standard on the Cooper S (five-door) we’ve got here (as well as the JCW) – while an illuminated dash featuring the United Kingdom’s equally iconic, multi-nation banner is available as an option.Of course, there’s more to the update of the third-generation Mini released in 2014, if not extensive changes. … [Read more...] about 2018 Mini Cooper S 5-door hatch review

Two people who struck a moose on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire Saturday night are “lucky to be alive,’’ fire officials said. The driver and a passenger were heading north in Campton shortly before 11 p.m. when their two-door Mini Cooper hit the moose as it crossed Interstate 93 and slid off the roadway into some trees, trapping the passenger, fire officials said in a Sunday statement. “Fortunately bystanders were quick to take action, likely saving a life,’’ the statement said. It's not so Mini anymore! The updated 2018 Mini Hatch is nearly upon us, but how far has it come since the original reborn, 'new' Mini Cooper?Good question! To find out, let's have a look back in time to see how the German-owned British hatch has evolved after nearly two decades on sale.First generation (R50/R53): 2000-2006Launched towards the end of 2000 (2002 in Australia), the 'R50' Mini hatchback was the first model launched under the new Mini marque, after the original Mini was discontinued earlier that same year. The first-generation of the new Mini was developed by the Rover Group and BMW during the late 1990s, though the Bavarian marque took full control of the project when it sold Rover in 2000.In Australia, just the 85kW Cooper and 120kW Cooper S were launched initially, though a more affordable and less powerful Mini One was available overseas. The original Mini Hatch was priced from $32,650 before on-road costs when it arrived Down Under in 2002, while the … [Read more...] about Mini Hatch: Through the generations
Like them or loathe them, there's no escaping the fact that Minis are big business for BMW. Last year was a record for Plant Oxford, with 223,817 cars being produced there. At the current rate a new Mini is completed every 67 seconds, which is the same frequency with which another forum post is made about those rear lights. With this being a fairly modest visual update, those half Union Jacks on the Mini's rump do rather dominate discussion. For what it's worth opinion was split on the launch event between those who like the look and those less convinced; they're certainly a talking point, which for some Mini customer may well be enough on its own. The important facelift news has been covered before, but a brief refresh in case you only noticed the back: the larger infotainment display is now standard on all models, the range of remote and concierge services has been extended, all Minis get LED headlights and the customisation possibilities have been pushed yet further. This goes … [Read more...] about Mini Cooper S facelift: Driven
MINI facelifted the Hatch and Convertible at the beginning of the year with a few subtle changes both inside and out, which allow it to fly under the radar. For example, there are new taillights with the Union Jack pattern, headlamps with optional Matrix LED system, new trims, fabrics, steering wheel and a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system offered on all models. If the 2019 MINI Hatch doesn’t sound that exciting, that’s because there was need to tamper with an already successful formula. The model was a hit for the BMW-owned brand before the updates, so there wasn’t really any need for massive improvements; as a result, its oily bits remain untouched for the 2019MY.
