The Italdesign Aztec was one of the more outlandish concept cars of the 1980s, a surprise to even see one made for the show circuit, totally mind-blowing when a Japanese industrialist commissioned a run of road-legal versions at half a million a pop. You’d be forgiven for not knowing about the 1988 Italdesign Aztec, as it was the rarest of the rare, combining rally tech with coachbuilt style. You get a tuned Audi inline five behind you and your passenger mated to a Lancia Delta Integrale drivetrain. Also pop-ups and external gauges. Every so often one goes up for sale for about what it would have cost new and the whole internet freaks out that something so strange could go for so much. In 2014, one went up for sale in Japan asking $750,000 on eBay. Bonhams expected $290,000-$400,000 for one at Paris back in 2009, and gave a good rundown on why the car seems to exist mostly in the shadows: Post-Turin the rights were bought by a Japanese industrialist, Mario Myakawa, who … [Read more...] about How To Win a Car Show: Roll Up in a Road-Legal Concept Car

Now I know that the largely American Jalopnik audience doesn’t care much about Skoda, Volkswagen’s bargain Czech subsidiary, beyond maybe a general sense of longing. But a Skoda concept is coming to the Paris Motor Show that’s actually pretty interesting, and hopefully a sign of good things to come. Meet the Skoda Vision RS Concept. It’s a hybrid hot hatch! Or at least, a hybrid warm hatch, since its specs aren’t quite hot enough to make you want to renounce your American citizenship and move to Europe. The concept packs a 150 horsepower, 1.5-liter gasoline engine mated to a 75-kW electric motor, creating a system good for a combined 242 HP. Zero to 62 mph is claimed to be 7.1 seconds. That’s... not mind-blowing, but not slow, either. It also can do up to 70 km (about 44 miles) on electricity alone, it has kinetic energy recovery while driving, and the battery can be fully charged in 2.5 hours with a home charging station. It also looks pretty … [Read more...] about The Skoda Vision RS Concept Brings Hybrid Power to the Hot Hatch World
After seeing these last images from Goodwood of the BMW M8 Gran Coupe Concept, I can say with confidence, that the sleek four-door grand tourer is the most beautiful car – series production or concept – which was unveiled this year by BMW. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and others might disagree with me, but if you look at the overall design and proportions, you can see why one would be attracted to the M8 Gran Coupe. While the car was unveiled in a concept form, the word is that the production series model will not deviate much from the initial design. The front already looks like ready for primetime, with large air intakes typical to M cars, while the rear might get some slight adjustments to the bumper and the trunk lid. The M treatment adds M-typical elements such as large wheels, massive air intakes, widened fenders, a carbon-fiber roof, a prominent rear spoiler, and four exhaust pipes. The kidney grille, the wheels, and the exhaust tips are … [Read more...] about Is the M8 Gran Coupe Concept the most stunning BMW of 2018?

Unveiled last year in Dubai, the Devel Sixty is an off-road concept that sits in a league of its own. It’s basically a military vehicle for the road with six-wheel traction, which makes the likes of the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6, the Flying Huntsman and Hennessey VelociRaptor look tame in comparison. Beneath its stunning exterior design is a 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine that puts out an impressive 720 horsepower and 738 pound-feet (1,000Nm) of torque. We still don’t know the official 0-62mph (0-100km/h) time, nor its top speed for that matter, but for what is essentially a go-anywhere vehicle, the Devel Sixty is insanely fast on the drag strip. Devel Sixty Concept vs. Mercedes-AMG GT S drag race Filmed recently in action, it took on a Mercedes-AMG GT S and smoked it, despite the 3.8 seconds required by the German sports car to hit the 62 mph (100 km/h) mark and its 193 mph (310 km/h) official top speed. Next came a Mercedes G-Wagen, which didn’t pose a threat … [Read more...] about Six-Wheeled Devel Sixty Concept Is An Absolute Beast On The Drag Strip
