Orion Sang Detroit Free Press Published 12:42 PM EDT Oct 29, 2018 Jim Harbaugh had a lot to say last week as he discussed a pregame incident between Michigan and Michigan State. This week? Not so much. Harbaugh and the Wolverines are preparing for Penn State, the last game of a three-game gauntlet many said was the most difficult portion of Michigan's schedule. Last year, the Wolverines' 42-13 loss at Penn State knocked them out of the Big Ten title race. Harbaugh and Michigan have a healthy appreciation for the Nittany Lions, who are 6-2 this season. "Penn State is an excellent football team," Harbaugh said, and "they are once again this year, in all phases. Very good team. Here is what Harbaugh said as he previewed Michigan’s game Saturday against Penn State (3:45 PM, ESPN): More: Michigan football schedule 2018: Start times, TV guide, results Harbaugh pleased with run game Michigan has seen gradual improvement up front all season. Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 5:17 p.m. UTC Sep 4, 2018 In the eyes of college football coaches, it wasn't the best of opening weeks for either Michigan football or Michigan State football. The Spartans, who beat Utah State, 38-31, in Friday's opener, dropped one spot, from 12 to 13, in the latest USA TODAY Coaches' Poll, released Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines, who lost at Notre Dame, 24-17, dropped eight spots, from 14th to 22nd. The only other team with a bigger drop was Miami (Fla.), which fell from eighth to 21st after getting crushed by LSU. Ohio State, like MSU, won but fell one spot, from third to fourth. Alabama and Clemson remain the top two teams, followed by Georgia, the Buckeyes and Oklahoma. Wisconsin is sixth, and Penn State, which fell one spot to 10th after beating Appalachian State in overtime, are the other ranked Big Ten teams. USA TODAY Coaches' Poll 1. Alabama 2. Clemson 3. Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 9:45 p.m. UTC Aug 13, 2018 EAST LANSING — It was an on-the-job learning curve for Luke Campbell and Cole Chewins last year. Michigan State football needs both offensive tackles to make big leaps this fall, both in the run game and in protecting quarterback Brian Lewerke. “It’s not high school football – it’s Big Ten football, it’s college football,” sophomore right tackle Campbell said last week at media day. “So you’re going against the best of the best. And I like to challenge myself with that.” While No. 12 MSU loses only center Brian Allen from last year’s offense, it also wants to see more from its bookends on the edge of the line. That was most evident against eventual Big Ten champion Ohio State and its dominating defensive line, which totaled six sacks and held the Spartans to a season-low 64 rushing yards. “We’re always striving to be … [Read more...] about Michigan State football wants more from OTs Cole Chewins, Luke Campbell
Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 11:00 p.m. UTC Aug 7, 2018 EAST LANSING — It’s a position for which Mike Tressel has been groomed. The question is, where will Michigan State’s new defensive coordinator be inside Spartan Stadium come game day? Tressel and Mark Dantonio will have that figured out when the lights come on for the season-opener against Utah State on Aug. 31. Until then … “We’ll have him up and down and all around to try and figure it out,” Dantonio said. “It’s about where he’s most comfortable and where I’m most comfortable.” After three seasons sharing the title with Harlon Barnett, who left in January to run the defense at Florida State, the longtime linebackers coach now takes over as Dantonio’s main defensive coordinator this season. It is now all on the longtime linebackers coach to be the synapse between Dantonio’s brain and an MSU defense that returns almost … [Read more...] about Michigan State football: Press box or sideline for DC Mike Tressel?
