California Gov. Jerry Brown (D), the only border state governor who had not yet committed troops to President Trump’s National Guard deployment, said Wednesday that he will accept federal funding for 400 personnel — though they would be barred from working on wall construction. National Guard troops fall under the command of state governors, and in a letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Brown said those from California will support operations against drug traffickers, gun runners and smuggling gangs. “Combating these criminal threats are priorities for all Americans — Republicans and Democrats,” Brown wrote. “But let’s be crystal clear on the scope of this mission,” his letter continued. “This will not be a mission to build a new wall. It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life. And the California National … [Read more...] about California governor, a frequent Trump critic, agrees to limited National Guard role at Mexico border

Mazda3 Sales to Increase up to 20% Due to New Plant in Mexico
Tweet Tweet Mazda has had a rough period in the US lately, with 15% sales down and only 104,713 units sold. That might have been due to some production restrains. Since the Japanese car manufacture really knows how strategy works, the company announced that a new plant would be built in Salamanca, Mexico, to provide extra sales for a market that hasn’t been marked before. More than that, the automaker would save a lot of money, since the plant is being built on a cheap ground, and that would make things easier to sell the car in the rest of the US. Tom Carey, the chairman of Mazda`s national dealer council stated that the company would increase the sales up to $20 due to Mexico inventory. The new plant would enter production this month. With the new plant being built, Mazda will be on tracks and predicts to exceed 300,000 total sales in the US for 2014 alone, with the highest percentage figures since 1994, when the car manufacturer succeeded in selling 375,000 units. By the … [Read more...] about Mazda3 Sales to Increase up to 20% Due to New Plant in Mexico

Tweet TweetRight now, the car market that is most discussed in the sprawling Chinese one, with the US coming a close second. But even with so much invested into those two countries, a car maker should also pay attention to other possibilities as well. Nothing is sure for now, but as Peter Tabera, head of Mercedes-Benz Mexico stated in a press release, “there is a clear interest in the domestic market”. While not the most important market at the time, Mexico would be a good expansion for the German car maker, and future will tell if it will really happen. … [Read more...] about Mexico might produce Mercedes vehicles
Why Mexico confirmed Loeb as the greatest of all time
Sebastien Loeb was back, and made a big impact. Pic: mcklein-imagedatabase.com They were talking about it in the smoky bars around Leon while savouring their tequilas and necking their Coronas. They were even talking about it in the mountains of Mexico while clearing their cactus and packing their ponchos. The Mexicans like things hot, and this was one hot topic of conversation. Should he back? Could he be good? Would he be able to win? Yes, yes and a final emphatic yes was the answer. OK, so Sebastien Loeb didn’t win in Mexico, but for a glorious few hours on Saturday we allowed ourselves to believe that might just be possible. He rolled back the years to remind us of just why he is a nine-time champion and 78-time rally winner. It was thrilling, it was compelling and it was nothing short of bloody brilliant. The last time the guy competed full time in the championship was 2012. How many other examples are there of champions returning after five years away and showing the new … [Read more...] about Why Mexico confirmed Loeb as the greatest of all time

Goodbye, Gelandewagen! Blasting through Mexico in the First-Gen Mercedes-Benz G-class
Our cluster of high-powered SUVs tore away from Mexico City headed southeast, flanked by a chase car carrying armed personnel, just in case. An hour down the road, we stopped to change license plates. The limited-access freeway gave way to a two-lane road, but the needle of the speedometer remained close to 200 km/h, the equivalent of 124 mph. We had an excuse not to waste any time: That evening, Mercedes-Benz was unveiling a hybrid version of its GLE in Oaxaca de Juárez, almost exactly 300 miles away from the capital. Reason enough to make haste, especially since the police appeared to be utterly unfazed by our elevated pace. The GLE hybrid represents the future, but we opted for heritage in the form of the classic G-wagen, which made its final official appearance as a new car at this driving event. Since its launch in 1979, the G-wagen had been updated with great caution; in 1990, the W460 became the W461, and the W463 was added as a more luxurious version. Later this month, … [Read more...] about Goodbye, Gelandewagen! Blasting through Mexico in the First-Gen Mercedes-Benz G-class
Canadians may soon be able to buy used cars from Mexico
Canada is opening its used car market to vehicles from Mexico to fulfill the obligations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). While vehicles 15 years old or older can already be imported to Canada, this move concerns late-model used vehicles. The only other country Canada accepts used vehicles under 15 years old from is the United States, and NAFTA stipulates that Canada should have already completed this bit of border opening by the end of 2010.According to Canada's Sympatico Autos, there's not likely to be an immediate flood of Mexi-cars into the Great White North, however. Brian Osler, president of the North American Automobile Trade Association (NAATA) notes that when cars from the United States became available, "it took a long time for people to become aware that there was more than one buying channel." Not only that, but vehicles will still need to meet Canadian emissions and safety standards, and the program is being phased in, starting with vehicles 10 or more … [Read more...] about Canadians may soon be able to buy used cars from Mexico

US Supreme Court Confirms Confrontation Right in Radar, DUI Cases
In a decision that has wide-ranging implications for photo enforcement, speeding tickets and driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) charges, the US Supreme Court yesterday reconfirmed the Sixth Amendment right to confront one’s accuser applies to analysts who claim to have certified evidence from a machine. The 5-4 decision concluded that “stand-in” expert witnesses are not a substitute for the individuals who actually conducted the tests.
