However, over the course of the season, some of these concepts have shown clear advantages and many of the cars on the grid have started to converge into a handful of particular design philosophies. Sidepod concepts The three main sidepod design philosophies that had emerged at the beginning of the season were the inwash, downwash, and outwash concepts. However, the German-based automaker is ready to refresh it, including the hotter AMG GLA 35, which our spy photographers have caught testing for the first time. Mercedes isn’t giving the model a complete makeover. Instead, this is its mid-cycle refresh where the company tweaks the front and rear fascias and makes other updates, and the AMG GLA 35 variant can’t escape that. The photos show the hatchback with its front fascia covered, hiding redesigned headlights and a revamped front bumper. The Panamericana grille remains with slight changes. There’s not a lot of camouflage at the rear, but the taillights are covered, suggesting that Mercedes will tweak their styling, likely updating the internal graphics. During the modern Supercars era there has mostly been three events that made up the Season of Endurance. They were a 500-kilometre race, traditionally at Sandown, in the lead-up to Bathurst, the Bathurst 1000, and then the Gold Coast street race. However during the COVID era that was scaled back to cut costs, with the Bathurst 1000 the only race to survive the enduro cull. That has significantly cut down the amount of laps co-drivers get during the year, with running now limited to team test days (of which only three are allowed), sponsor ride days, a half-hour practice session at the Sandown SuperSprint, and then the official practice sessions for the Bathurst 1000. But from grids averaging at 20.3 cars last season, grid sizes this year have increased to an average of 28.25 cars per round, with the addition of factory drivers from Lamborghini and Porsche and returning three-time DTM champion Rene Rast raising the bar. Only Schubert BMW racer Sheldon van der Linde has won more than once, and a different driver has been on pole for all eight races so far. Lamborghini is the only brand yet to win a race, although Grasser Racing’s Mirko Bortolotti heads the standings. As he debuts in the World Rally Championship, Jos Verstappen says his son Max Verstappen has taken a keen interest, but thinks he is “crazy”. Jos, who began his rallying ventures around a year and a half ago, is now in the midst of by far his biggest challenge yet as the tackles the WRC’s Ypres Rally in Belgium in a Rally2 Citreon C3, having competed in the car previously during this year’s Belgian Rally Championship. Before taking up rallying Jos completed an extensive career of circuit racing, which included 106 starts in Formula 1 and two podium finishes. His son Max Verstappen is the reigning Formula 1 World Champion and looks set to claim back-to-back titles, currently leading the Drivers’ Championship by 80 points with nine rounds to go.
