1992 F1 champ Nigel Mansell sees an opportunity for George Russell, as Lewis Hamilton has not “dusted off his right foot yet”. Following the controversial conclusion to the 2021 season, which saw Hamilton miss out on a record eighth World Championship on the last lap of the Abu Dhabi season finale, the Brit went into 2022 as a favourite to get that eighth title in the bag. However, that possibility already looks to be off the table by the summer break, Mercedes having fallen adrift of Red Bull at the start of Formula 1’s new regulatory era, with Ferrari assuming the role of main challenger to Red Bull. Hamilton also has a new team-mate for this season in the shape of Russell, who claimed his first career pole last time out in Hungary, also Mercedes’ first pole of the season. All eyes on Spa as porpoising and flexi-floor TD arrives As F1 gets set to return, a new technical directive could have a major impact on the first race back. Tracking the trends of car development in 2022 · RaceFans
The new regulations for Formula 1 this year created a unique opportunity for ten very different looking cars to line up on the grid in Bahrain at the start of the season. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Each team had their own design philosophy and took different design approaches to the new set of regulatuions. However, over the course of the season, some of these concepts have shown clear advantages and many of the cars on the grid have started to converge into a handful of particular design philosophies. Sidepod concepts The three main sidepod design philosophies that had emerged at the beginning of the season were the inwash, downwash, and outwash concepts. Mercedes and McLaren had notably taken the inwash concept where, from the top view of the car, the rear of the coke bottle section narrows inwards into the rear bodywork without a very aggressive undercut on the sidepods, making for a rather short sidepod. The inwash concept is designed for the … [Read more...] about Tracking the trends of car development in 2022 · RaceFans
Refreshed Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 Spied For First Time With Minor Tweaks
Listen to this article The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA isn’t that old, arriving for the 2020 model year. However, the German-based automaker is ready to refresh it, including the hotter AMG GLA 35, which our spy photographers have caught testing for the first time. Mercedes isn’t giving the model a complete makeover. Instead, this is its mid-cycle refresh where the company tweaks the front and rear fascias and makes other updates, and the AMG GLA 35 variant can’t escape that. The photos show the hatchback with its front fascia covered, hiding redesigned headlights and a revamped front bumper. The Panamericana grille remains with slight changes. There’s not a lot of camouflage at the rear, but the taillights are covered, suggesting that Mercedes will tweak their styling, likely updating the internal graphics. Supercars enduro format “incredibly unfair” – Tander
Listen to this article The Supercars champion unloaded on the current enduro schedule, which features just one two-driver, long-distance race – the Bathurst 1000. During the modern Supercars era there has mostly been three events that made up the Season of Endurance. They were a 500-kilometre race, traditionally at Sandown, in the lead-up to Bathurst, the Bathurst 1000, and then the Gold Coast street race. However during the COVID era that was scaled back to cut costs, with the Bathurst 1000 the only race to survive the enduro cull. That has significantly cut down the amount of laps co-drivers get during the year, with running now limited to team test days (of which only three are allowed), sponsor ride days, a half-hour practice session at the Sandown SuperSprint, and then the official practice sessions for the Bathurst 1000. That has put a premium on experience when it comes to co-driver choice. According to Tander the lack of running has widened the gap … [Read more...] about Supercars enduro format “incredibly unfair” – Tander
Drivers have to be "more on point" in "closer" 2022 DTM fight – Gotz
The Mercedes-AMG factory driver won the DTM’s first title of its new GT3 era last year for the HRT outfit before switching to Winward Racing for this season. But from grids averaging at 20.3 cars last season, grid sizes this year have increased to an average of 28.25 cars per round, with the addition of factory drivers from Lamborghini and Porsche and returning three-time DTM champion Rene Rast raising the bar. Only Schubert BMW racer Sheldon van der Linde has won more than once, and a different driver has been on pole for all eight races so far. Lamborghini is the only brand yet to win a race, although Grasser Racing’s Mirko Bortolotti heads the standings. Gotz produced his best weekend of the season last time out at the Norisring with a brace of sixth-places and sits 16th in the points at the halfway point of the season. Speaking to Autosport prior to the Norisring weekend, the 36-year-old said: “The start of the season was not easy. “I think generally the DTM … [Read more...] about Drivers have to be "more on point" in "closer" 2022 DTM fight – Gotz
