There's really nothing better than watching a big, fast wagon get flogged on the track. Thanks to Carfection, we get to see it happen with Mercedes-AMG's latest masterpiece, the E63 S wagon. Though the E63 S is all-wheel drive, it has a dedicated drift mode that cuts power to the front wheels, sending all 602 horsepower from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to the rear axles only. Placing the car in drift mode also disables traction control completely, allowing the driver to get as sideways as they want without fear of getting caught by electronics. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Henry Catchpole of Carfection put together a short video walking through the drift mode process, and how to activate it in the car. He then immediately goes out and does some massive slides. Remember, this is a full-size family wagon. The video is pretty short, but provides just enough sideways estate action to satisfy. We promise. … [Read more...] about Watching a Wagon Get Sideways Is a Pastime We Can All Enjoy

I’ll never forget overhearing what my parents paid for our house when I was a kid. “Dad, you idiot” I groaned. “We could have bought a Ferrari!” Yeah. Sure, I didn’t understand the concept of mortgages, and it’s a good thing he didn’t listen to me, because you can’t sleep in many expensive exotics. Except for one: the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63S Wagon. It is as comfortable as it is quick. Hang on, sorry, I’ve just been reminded that Ace Hood established you can in fact also sleep in new Bugatti. Be that as it may, the Mercedes is the only car that two people can comfortably snooze in side-by-side like they might on any other night adding “best car for overnighting” to its long list of accolades. Or “fastest hotel room” below a first-class cabin on an Emirates flight, if you prefer. And on your night in the E63S, you can fall asleep looking up at the stars through a panoramic sunroof framed in beautiful soft … [Read more...] about What It’s Like To Sleep In A $130,000 Mercedes-AMG Wagon
The 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S is wrought from the middle of your Venn diagram of desires. You want a car with power and personality; you need a car that can carry kids and cargo. You want a 600 horsepower hot rod; you need safety and subtly. You like wagons, because you have good taste and are smart. Well strap yourselves in—kids and groceries and all—and hang the hell on. (Full disclosure: I asked Mercedes-Benz for this vehicle specifically since a few of my colleagues you know and love needed to be carted around LA for a couple days. I asked to keep it longer because, come on, AMG wagon.) Fast station wagons are quintessentially Jalopnik because they’re as useful as they are artful. And while I almost always argue in favor of having a fleet cheaper specialized cars rather than a single expensive one that tries to do everything, the E63 S Wagon is so freaking good at all things that it becomes its own kind of novelty. And yeah, it’s fast as hell. On a short … [Read more...] about Here’s Why The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon Is Still The God King Of Cars
We finally have our hands on a 603 horsepower $130,300 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S station wagon and are here to share as much of it as possible with all of you. Few cars embody the spirit of Jalopnik as much as a fast, fierce and also utility-friendly station wagon. And while we wish it had three pedals, come on. 603 HP wagon. Our test car has about $3,000 worth of carbon fiber on it, among other options, and so far all we can really tell you is that it’s loud and when you floor it from a stop light the car pretty much seems to alter the speed of time and space. Kristen Lee has also described the back seat as “nap friendly.” Expect some finer photos, a more complete shakedown and maybe some takes on what it’s like to live with this thing soon. Meanwhile, now’s a great time to ask questions and hopefully we can satisfy your curiosity in the review. … [Read more...] about What Do You Want To Know About The 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S Wagon?
BMW can’t even be bothered to sell any versions of its new 2017 5 Series wagons to us Americans at all, because we are not European scuba divers. But Mercedes is here to save the day with the all-new 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon coming to your local dealership this fall. The E63 S wagon takes everything you love about the absolutely bonkers E63 S sedan, like the 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 that pumps out 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, and shoves it into a gorgeous wagon body. All that power is transmitted through a nine-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, meaning the E63 S should hit 60 MPH in 3.4 seconds. The wagon has all the “cool shit” from the sedan, like race mode, a locking rear differential, a lap timer app and of course, drift mode, because if you are going to drop this kind of coin on a 600+ horsepower wagon you better be able to get it sideways. The Mercedes E63 S wagon is scheduled to make its world debut at the Geneva Auto Show and … [Read more...] about The 603 Horsepower 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon Is Coming To America

Mercedes-AMG might be gunning for overall Nürburgring glory with the Project One hypercar, but its other cars are already doing impressive things at the famous track. In the hands of Christian Gebhardt, of Germany's Sport Auto magazine, an AMG E63 S Wagon just set a new lap record. Running a 7:45.19 at the Nordschleife, the AMG E63 S is now the fastest wagon to ever lap the track, and one of the fastest four-doors too. Still, it's impressive for something that can carry a small family and all their stuff in luxury. This laptime is also a huge improvement over the last E63 S, which ran a 7:55 in a 2013 Sport Auto test. Oh, and that last-gen E63 S was a sedan, making the new wagon's record that much more impressive. … [Read more...] about The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Is the Nurburgring’s Fastest Wagon
The explosive Audi RS2, all 311bhp of it, is often reckoned to be the world’s first high-performance estate.Certainly it was the first car to combine the practicality of a bigger- booted wagon body with the straight- line speed of a supercar. Thanks to its quattro four-wheel-drive system and punchy turbocharged engine, it was actually faster to 30mph than the mighty McLaren F1, as discovered by this magazine’s road testers in the mid-1990s – but the first rapid estate car it was not. BMW’s E34 M5 Touring had arrived two years before it, in 1992, albeit in left-hand- drive markets only.Another two years before that, Subaru had endowed an estate car with more power than was strictly necessary by offering the Legacy with as much as 197bhp in its home market of Japan.Whether it was Audi, BMW or Subaru that invented the fast estate is a matter for debate, then. But which manufacturer builds the best high- performance wagons in 2018? That we can answer for certain. As … [Read more...] about Super estate showdown: Mercedes-AMG E63 S vs C63 S vs Audi RS6 vs RS4
