There’s something under-the-radar, ultra-cool about a high performance wagon. My buddy Steve has just moved from Surrey to central London and traded his Porsche Cayenne Turbo for an Audi RS4 Avant. “It’s fantastic,” he says. “I can use around London for business during the week and no-one looks at it twice. Only the real enthusiasts know what it is. To everyone else, it’s just an A4 wagon.” On the weekends, though, when he’s heading down to his place on the coast via the leafy English two lanes, it’s a 420-hp road rocket that blows the doors off unsuspecting 911s. Steve’s had the RS4 Avant a couple of months now, and still can’t wipe the silly grin from his face. But hi-po wagons are too cool for America, it seems. We used to be able to get the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon on special order, but the new 2010 model is destined to remain a stranger to these shores. No-one here is that interested, it seems. Which is a pity, … [Read more...] about 2010 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon: The Best of All Worlds?

World’s Fastest Car show host Justin Bell is at Willow Springs in a new episode, but he’s not alone as several Mercedes-Benz AMG models are lined up and waiting to be drive. While Bell could jump behind the wheel of the sexy SLS AMG GT or the new CLA45 AMG, he’s more anxious to get behind the wheel of something soccer moms and dads might rather drive: the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon. With performance levels equivalent to some of the top supercars on the market and enough storage capacity to haul weeks’ worth of Costco groceries, the E63 AMG wagon could be the most family friendly supercar on the market. With a 186 mph top speed and a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds, the E63 AMG wagon accelerates faster than the BMW M5 sedan (3.7 seconds), Aston Martin Vanquish (4.0 seconds), and Porsche Carrera 4S (3.9 seconds), which means you’ll get the kids to soccer practice a whole lot faster. Contributing to that power is a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 that … [Read more...] about 2014 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon on World’s Fastest Car Show
A year ago, I described the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series as “a track-to-street tour de force.” With a 510-hp naturally aspirated V-8, 15.4-inch brakes, and 19-inch forged wheels with R-compound Dunlops, the C Black was (and is), in my humble opinion, right there with the Porsche 911 Carrera S as the best all-around sports car for under $150,000. With the E63 AMG S-Model 4Matic Wagon, Benz’s AMG crew has done it again, building another ultimate of ultimate. If Superman had a family, he’d gladly drive this car and change his title to Superdad. He could haul up to three Superkids in the back seat, plus 57.4 cubic feet of Superstuff in the rear hold if the Superkids stay home. As the man who’s faster than a speeding bullet, he’d want a ride that could live up to his reputation. And, boy, does the E63 Wagon do that. Just how fast is Superwagon? It tops out at a claimed 186 mph, which is fast enough to Vmax alongside a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. The E63 … [Read more...] about Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon: Faster Than a Speeding Bullet? Just About
There are those people who appreciate cars as a mode of transport, and then there are those that appreciate them for being something to be marveled at. Minor miracles of engineering that can transform a bad day into a good one regardless of their objective merits. The Mercedes E63 AMG wagon would make no sense to the former, which is one very good reason why I like it so much. It is, after all, an estate car. A vehicle designed to fit into many varied lifestyles with minimal fuss and drama. So why not stick a 6.2-litre, 518bhp V8 under the bonnet and transform it into something that can do all the essential estate-like things and then transport you home from the tip sideways with your tyres on fire? Makes perfect sense to me. In fact, even disregarding the many childish reasons for wanting one of these (all of which proudly top my list) the E63 is one of the best Mercedes’ we’ve seen for a long time. It offers that special blend of being calming transport home when you want … [Read more...] about My Top Car of 2010 is the Mercedes E63 AMG Estate
Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Wagon is no slouch. It's considerably more sporting than some full-blown sports cars, all while being able to haul the kids to soccer practice or make a quick trip to the grocery store. What if you want more, though? Well, if the E63's 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque aren't enough to sate your appetite for power, the team from Brabus is just a phone call away, and now the German tuning house has turned its hand to the E63 Wagon. This might be the only 838-horsepower, 848-pound-foot car to be disappointing, although that's merely because its sedan counterpart comes to market with 850 horsepower and 1,069 lb-ft of torque. Despite these lower power figures, though, Brabus is claiming that the 850 6.0 Wagon is actually faster to 62 than the Sedan - 3.1 seconds in the long-roof and 3.5 in the four-door. Top speed is limited to 186 miles per hour. All the extra fury is thanks to a bored-out version of the E63's 5.5-liter, biturbocharged V8. Now displacing … [Read more...] about Mercedes E63 AMG wagon gets 838 hp thanks to Brabus
Hot damn! We will be able to order one, after all.Following the very recent introduction of the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-class wagon comes the astonishingly powerful AMG version. We’ve been fast-wagon junkies for years, and since carmakers generally don’t give their family haulers enough grunt, we have crafted a few high-horsepower grocery getters of our own and called them Boss Wagons. In 2005, the AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz E55 wagon appeared, and its 469 hp made it possible for an entire family to win a drag race. That AMG wagon proved that one car could do the job of a minivan (carry seven occupants), a sports car (0–60 in 4.1 seconds), and a luxury car (its refined demeanor and leather interior made it no less coddling than an S-class). Its successor, the 507-hp E63 AMG wagon, was even quicker, running the 0–60 sprint in 4.0 seconds. (Watch the E63 wagon beat an Audi R8 at Milan Dragway.)Keep Reading: 2011 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon – Car News … [Read more...] about 2011 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon – Car News
Brace yourself for some shocking news: The 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 in the last Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon we tested, a 2012 model, made only 550 horsepower. (Twenty-seven horses were added for the wagon’s 2014 refresh, but that’s a drop in the bucket when you’re talking German muscle.) Although the thought of going through the drudgery of daily suburban life with such a hardship is a cruel one, it does reconfirm our faith in the resiliency of the human spirit. Thankfully, German tuner Brabus worked tirelessly to bring an end to our plight, providing the public relief in the form of the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon Brabus 850 6.0.Brabus starts the makeover by enlarging all eight cylinders, installing tailor-made forged pistons and custom billet connecting rods, and then replacing the crank with a longer, precision-balanced billet unit. By the time the engine-building shop puts down the tools, displacement has increased from 5.5 liters to 5.9—as this is a high-po … [Read more...] about Brabus Tunes Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon to 850 Horsepower—Where Do We Sign?
Last spring, I sold my Porsche to buy a station wagon. Car guys understand this, because it’s outlined in our unspoken creed: eventually we all trade in our beloved sports cars for a practical family vehicle that can haul our kids and whatever expensive musical instruments they’ve decided to learn this week. But for me, the swap came early: at 23 years old, single and without children, I swapped my 911 Turbo for a mommy-mobile.Most car guys understand this, too, when they hear about my mommy-mobile of choice: a 2007 Mercedes E63 AMG station wagon. At 507 horsepower and 465 pound-feet, it had more of each than the Ferrari F430 or Lamborghini Gallardo of its day. This compares rather favorably to the car my own mom had when I was growing up, which was a 1993 Isuzu Rodeo with a stick shift and no airbags. The Rodeo had more power than nothing, except maybe one of those little scooters you rent in the Caribbean from a place that just finished washing off the blood stains from … [Read more...] about Doug’s Review: 2007 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon

No one needs a 500-plus-hp family wagon. To want, desire, or even lust for such a beast, however, seems to us a perfectly rational and natural response. One could argue that any of the current crop of androgynous crossovers is equally capable of performing everyday familial duties, and at a price less than one-fifth that of this E63 AMG wagon. Of course, those presenting the argument likely have never experienced the thrust provided by the E63’s hand-assembled V-8. We have, and it’s time to argue. After a few attempts at plastering cereal bits, wayward Happy Meal figurines, and sippy cups against the wagon’s back window with applications of the right pedal, logical arguments of practicality or restraint became moot. Rest assured, no children were harmed in the testing of this Mercedes—we made sure they were dropped off at school beforehand. Too bad for them; it’s not every day you get to ride in a 175-mph station wagon. More Interior … [Read more...] about 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon
