Citing an unnamed source, a new report from BusinessLine says that the company has decided to launch the Maruti Wagon R EV as its first EV in 2020. Suzuki had already announced its intention to launch its first electric vehicle in 2020. Developing a dedicated EV would have proved very expensive. So, it was expected that Maruti Suzuki will introduce a pure electric variant of an existing model. The company was conducting consumer surveys earlier this year to understand what are the expectations from EVs in our market. The latest report suggests that it has concluded from these surveys that the Maruti Wagon R is the right model to introduce an electric powertrain in. Suzuki will construct a Lithium-ion battery plant on the grounds of the Gujarat Plant that was opened last year. Maruti Suzuki Swift launched in India at Rs 4.99 lakh The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift has been launched at a starting price of Rs 4.99 at the 2018 Auto Expo. The car is on offer in 12 variants, and pricing of the petrol version ranges from Rs 4.99 lakh to Rs 6.96 lakh, while the diesel version is priced between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 7.96 lakh. This is the all-new third generation Swift from Suzuki that broke cover internationally last year before finally making its way to Indian shores at the Auto Expo. Maruti Suzuki revealed in December 2017 that they intended to have their first production electric vehicle on the road by 2020. Now this Economic Times article says arch-rivals Hyundai are preparing to beat Maruti to the electric vehicle debut with the Kona electric SUV that is likely to roll out in 2019. The company will be investing over a billion US dollars in India over the next three years and the company has revealed that the Kona's local assembly is part of the agenda. Maruti Suzuki, on the other hand, are in the middle of an extensive survey that they believe will mirror the one that led to the Maruti 800 - more details on the results are likely to arrive by June 2018. However, Hyundai Motor officials told OVERDRIVE that the Kona is being referred to as a possibility.
