Listen to this article The Barcelona test was the first time teams and drivers were able to experience the definitive 18-inch race tyres mated to the 2022 cars that they were designed for, having tested them on converted mule cars last year. Given that so much else was new in the 2022 package, tyres were not a major topic of conversation in the Barcelona paddock, suggesting that the change had not made a significant difference. However, Sainz, who ran more laps over the week than anyone else, believes that they will allow drivers to race harder, which is something that has been called for in recent seasons. "I did quite a bit of testing last year, I think I did three or four days in total with the compounds," said the Spaniard. "And they look like they are suiting well this new generation of cars, and they look to be at least allowing you to push a bit more on them. "And compared to other years, maybe a bit less overheating, a bit less deg, but there's still deg, … [Read more...] about Sainz: We can push harder with new 18-inch F1 tyres

F1 22 game review: A worthy upgrade, despite glamorisation
Listen to this article F1 2022 is the 13 th successive official game created by Codemasters’ Birmingham outpost. For the most part, you know what to expect – a driving video game with all the real world F1 stars, tracks and cars that is both authentic and accessible. Except, this time, it’s not called F1 2022, but EA SPORTS F1 22, and there is an electronic dance music soundtrack, Oakley sunglasses and Ferrari road cars. With the development studio purchased by Redwood City-based publishing giant Electronic Arts last year for $1.2 billion , this is the season where the change of ownership has clearly taken hold. The EA influence predominately takes the form of F1 Life. In essence, a swanky living area where you can alter the look of the wallpaper and furniture, before creating your own avatar with branded clothing – more of which can be purchased with in-game currency, either earned or purchased with real-world money. Oh joy. This forms the backdrop to the main … [Read more...] about F1 22 game review: A worthy upgrade, despite glamorisation
Ricciardo to exec produce new Disney-backed F1 TV series
Daniel Ricciardo will become the latest Formula 1 driver to get behind the camera when he lends his thoughts to an upcoming Hulu series. With the success of Netflix’ Drive to Survive, it is no surprise to see other media companies are getting in on the act. Earlier this month, details emerged of an Apple TV movie starring Brad Pitt that Lewis Hamilton will produce and has a reported budget of up to $140million – the same as for a Formula 1 team under the 2022 cost cap. Apple have also acquired the rights to a documentary based on the seven-time World Champion. Another driver looking to get in on the act is McLaren’s Ricciardo who has joined up with ABC Signature, Temple Hill and Lionsgate TV to create a series for Hulu. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hulu are creating a Formula 1 scripted series that the McLaren driver will serve as an executive producer on. The exact content of the half-hour show series is still being kept under wraps but writers are reportedly … [Read more...] about Ricciardo to exec produce new Disney-backed F1 TV series

Alfa Romeo F1 no longer limited on spares from British Grand Prix
Listen to this article The Hinwil-based squad has faced some challenging weekends recently where it has been forced to bounce back from especially tricky first days of practice. As well as losing track time because of niggling reliability issues, its drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu had to prepare for races with older specification developments. That was because the team had been tight on spare parts and it did not want to risk a crash on Friday leaving it without its newest components for the rest of a race weekend. But having finally caught up with the production of spares at its factory, Alfa Romeo will be able to fit both its cars with its latest developments from this weekend’s race at Silverstone. Alfa Romeo’s head of trackside engineering Xevi Pujolar said about the situation: “On Fridays we still have some problems with reliability, and it is something we are working to get better. “But also in terms of performance on Friday, we have been … [Read more...] about Alfa Romeo F1 no longer limited on spares from British Grand Prix
Albon: Not clear how to fix F1 weaknesses on Williams car
Listen to this article Williams has struggled to compete with the rest of the midfield on a regular basis so far this season, leaving it at the foot of the constructors’ championship ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix. Albon has scored all three of Williams’ points this year, finishing 10th in Australia and ninth in Miami after capitalising on opportunities that fell the team’s way. Teammate Nicholas Latifi recently opened up about the “fundamental” struggles he has faced with the Williams FW44, which is yet to receive a sizeable update so far this season. A package is planned for the coming races and could arrive as early at this week at Silverstone, but Albon felt it was not clear how to address to struggles the team is currently facing. “Everyone has been upgrading, and we haven’t had a major upgrade in a while, so there’s that side to it,” Albon said. “Balance-wise, we have weaknesses in the car, which aren’t so clear to be able to fix with what we’ve … [Read more...] about Albon: Not clear how to fix F1 weaknesses on Williams car
McLaren: Budget cap uncertainty has put handbrake on F1 upgrades
Listen to this article Amid ongoing debate among grand prix racing’s chiefs about how best to address problems triggered by rising inflation and the cost of living crisis, teams are reluctant to keep spending on upgrades until they know there is no risk of them potentially being in breach of the spending rules. With McLaren having already admitted that it is on course to break the current $140 million cost cap limit , it is more mindful about the risk of further over-spend until it knows what F1 is doing to address the problems teams face. And that is why team principal Andreas Seidl has revealed that McLaren has stopped for now work on any more major developments to its MCL-36. “Hopefully it is not just us who had to pull the handbrake in terms of further developments, due to the restrictions we're having mainly from the cost cap side,” explained Seidl, speaking about the work on improving the team’s current challenger. “But there are also the restrictions you have … [Read more...] about McLaren: Budget cap uncertainty has put handbrake on F1 upgrades

Norris wants to use home crowd as boost for the team
Lando Norris has said the support of a home crowd will be “such a boost for the team” as he and McLaren prepare for their trip to Silverstone. Norris is one of four British drivers alongside Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Alex Albon to be competing in their home race this weekend and the McLaren racer is hoping the additional support will give him an extra edge. Last year, Norris arrived at Silverstone having finished no lower than eighth and having been on the podium three times but this season it is a different story. In 2022, he has just one podium to his name alongside two P15 finishes and a DNF in Miami. He finished outside of the points last time out in Canada but is hoping to use his home race as a springboard. “I’m so excited to be heading back to my home race at Silverstone,” Norris said. “Seeing the British fans and all the papaya as we drive round the track is always so motivating and such a boost for the team – nothing beats a home crowd. I’m looking … [Read more...] about Norris wants to use home crowd as boost for the team
