Sanctions-hit Russia has limited exports of noble gases such as neon, a key ingredient for making chips, until the end of 2022 to strengthen its market position, its trade ministry said on Thursday. Russia's export curbs could worsen the supply crunch in the global chips market. Ukraine was one of the world's largest suppliers of noble gases until it suspended production at its plants in the cities of Mariupol and Odesa in March. Exports of noble gases, which Russia used to supply to Japan and other countries, will be allowed only with special state permission until Dec. 31, the Russian government said on May 30. The move will provide an opportunity to "rearrange those chains that have now been broken and build new ones," Deputy Trade Minister Vasily Shpak told Reuters via the ministry's press service on Thursday. Russia accounts for 30% of the global supply of three noble gases - neon, krypton and xenon, according to the ministry's estimate. Russia will soon exhaust its combat capabilities, Western assessments predict
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 The Russian military will soon exhaust its combat capabilities and be forced to bring its offensive in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region to a grinding halt, according to Western intelligence predictions and military experts. "There will come a time when the tiny advances Russia is making become unsustainable in light of the costs and they will need a significant pause to regenerate capability," said a senior Western official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue. The assessments come despite continued Russian advances against outgunned Ukrainian forces, including the capture on Friday of the town of Severodonetsk, the biggest urban center taken by Russia in the east since launching the latest Donbas offensive nearly three months ago. The Russians are now closing in on the adjacent city of Lysychank, on the opposite bank of the Donetsk river. Szafnauer welcomes Netflix presence in team meetings
Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer believes Netflix gaining behind-the-scenes access to key meetings could prove to be a good thing for the sport’s visibility in the popular Drive to Survive series. Netflix cameras were reportedly present inside a fiery meeting of the team bosses ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, discussing the implications of the FIA’s new technical directive, which is aimed at limited the amount of bouncing or porpoising the drivers can experience. Red Bull’s Christian Horner and Mercedes’ Toto Wolff reportedly clashed in the meeting, accusing him and other team principals of playing “political games” in trying to imply that the new directive disproportionately helps Mercedes, given they have been the team arguably most affected by bouncing this season. Szafnauer pointed to the example set in the Senna documentary released in 2010, which showed rare footage inside heated driver briefings and protests against the FIA – and allowing Netflix into … [Read more...] about Szafnauer welcomes Netflix presence in team meetings

Denso May Consider Spinning Off Chip Business, Bloomberg Says, Citing Executive
Denso Corp may consider spinning off its chip business, a top executive of the major Japanese maker of semiconductors used in automobiles and a main supplier to Toyota Motor Corp told Bloomberg News on Friday. "We need to think about whether the time will come when we sell semiconductors, alone, externally," Bloomberg quoted Denso's chief technology officer, Yoshifumi Kato, as saying in an interview. Nothing had been decided on a split and the company's focus for now was on meeting internal chip demand, Bloomberg cited Kato as saying. Denso is not considering spinning off the semiconductor business at this moment, a company spokesperson said. Kato said last week the company expected demand for auto chips to be about a third higher by 2025 than it was in 2020, as the key component was increasingly used in fossil-fuel cars, electric vehicles and autonomous drive technology.
