He was 90. Rado died Tuesday night in New York City of cardio respiratory arrest, according to friend and publicist Merle Frimark. “Hair,” which has a story and lyrics by Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, was the first rock musical on Broadway, the first Broadway show to feature full nudity and the first to feature a same-sex kiss. Tributes came in from the theater world, including André De Shields, who tweeted “Rest in power, James Rado,” to playwright Michael R. Jackson, whose “A Strange Loop” just won the Tony Award for best new musical. He tweeted “rest in peace.” “Hair” made possible other rock musicals like “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Rent.” Like “Hamilton,” it was … [Read more...] about James Rado, who co-created groundbreaking ‘Hair,’ dies at 90

Doris Salcedo used 15,000 needles to represent pain of gun violence
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 When Colombian artist Doris Salcedo read Hannah Arendt's 1963 book "On Revolution," a passage about "civil war raging all over the earth" jumped out at her. It seemed like a strong assertion, especially to Salcedo, who lived in a country that had experienced deadly civil conflict for decades. But after learning about gun violence in the streets of Los Angeles, Salcedo noticed an alarming parallel - young people needlessly dying both in her home country, where there was declared war, and in the United States, where there was not. The two crises didn't seem so different. "You are killing each other. Brother killing brother," Salcedo says on a Zoom call from Bogotá, Colombia. "It is civil war. It is fratricidal violence." Salcedo has long taken a journalistic approach to her art, using extensive conversations with survivors of trauma as the basis for profound, even haunting … [Read more...] about Doris Salcedo used 15,000 needles to represent pain of gun violence

Tourists surrounded by flowers at Mon Jodd in Chiang Mai. (Photo: Dusida Worrachaddejchai) Thai domestic tourism is expected to grow by 162% to 188 million trips and generate 720 billion baht this year, despite rising inflation and sluggish purchasing power, according to ttb analytics, the research arm of TMBThanachart Bank. The growth will be mainly driven by the further easing of Covid-19 controls from July, said the firm. All 77 provinces nationwide will be designated as "green" Covid-19 surveillance zones, allowing business operators to fully operate without restrictions, while the cancellation of Thailand Pass from next month is expected to improve tourism sentiment. According to the analysis, even though Thai tourists remain concerned about surging energy prices, there is strong pent-up demand. Those who want to travel are expected to opt for secondary destinations more so than usual to avoid crowded places and maintain social distancing practices. Stars turn out for Dior’s 19,000 blooms at Paris show

The house's Paris Fashion Week show was an homage to late British painter Duncan Grant and celebrated member of London’s Bloomsbury Group, who died in 1978. VIP guests gawped as they entered a DIOR-branded tent to discover the makeshift country vista — replete with about 19,000 real poppies, wildflowers and flora planted on hills beside two reconstructed English country houses. All this for the 10 minute fashion show. The set was, of course, intended to evoke Grant's rolling landscapes. There were almost as many famous faces on display as flowers. David Beckham and son Cruz, Naomi Campbell, J Balvin, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel were among the … [Read more...] about Stars turn out for Dior’s 19,000 blooms at Paris show
Championship tensions boil over between Vettel and Hamilton but Ricciardo stays cool · RaceFans
Following two days of track action that saw incidents and accidents galore, Mercedes’s Valtteri Bottas casually predicted that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix could potentially prove to be ‘more of a mess’ than last year’s relatively uneventful affair. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Such was the degree of accuracy of Bottas’s prediction, it would ultimately transpire that this very same driver’s recovery from the back of the field following a first lap collision all the way to taking second place in the final 100m of the race would only prove to be a minor talking point in post-race discussions. Yes, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was one of those very special Formula 1 races where few made it to the chequered flag unscathed, few could’ve predicted the result and few are likely to ever forget it. Because not only was this race one of constant chaos and drama, it may have also provided us with some significant spice in the already very tasty rivalry between that … [Read more...] about Championship tensions boil over between Vettel and Hamilton but Ricciardo stays cool · RaceFans

The IndyCar series will return next weekend following a three-week summer break. Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson leads the championship, with Will Power in a close second place – and nine races left in the 2022 season. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free That the top two in the championship represent Chip Ganassi Racing and Team Penske, respectively, is not a surprise. Since the reunification of major American open-wheel racing in 2008, IndyCar has awarded a season championship 14 times and only once has it not gone to a driver from either of these two powerhouse teams. But it is more of a surprise to find Marcus Ericsson leading the charge for Ganassi and Will Power doing the same for Penske. These weren’t two names which were widely tipped as top contenders back in February when the season began at St. Petersburg, Florida. With Álex Palou entering as the reigning IndyCar champion after his first year with Ganassi and six-time champion Scott Dixon … [Read more...] about Ericsson not the only unexpected name leading IndyCar points at halfway · RaceFans
