Explained: Why Hamilton didn’t break F1’s rules for reversing on track
The F1 world champion had run wide through the gravel trap and nudged into the barriers at the Tosa hairpin on lap 31, after he hit a damp patch while lapping backmarker George Russell. Stuck against the barriers, Hamilton spent ages trying to work out how to get going again – with it pretty clear he needed to go backwards. After engaging reverse gear, Hamilton backed up all the way through the gravel trap and on to the track before getting going again. Such action raised eyebrows, however, with some suggesting that it was both dangerous and against the rules to reverse on to a live race track. It also triggered famous memories of the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix when Nigel Mansell was given the black flag for having reversed in the pitlane after skidding past his pit crew as he came in for fresh rubber. However, while Mansell had the rule book thrown at him this day, Hamilton’s manoeuvre was given the all clear by the FIA. The reasons are actually quite … [Read more...] about Explained: Why Hamilton didn’t break F1’s rules for reversing on track
Marquez “exploded” with emotion after “dream” comeback
Nine months since he suffered the arm break which would rule him out of the 2020 season, six-time MotoGP world champion Marquez made his return to action at Portimao this weekend. After qualifying sixth Marquez ran as high as third on the opening lap, before eventually being shuffled back to ninth as he tried to settle back into a rhythm. With several falls ahead, Marquez took the chequered flag 13 seconds behind race winner Fabio Quartararo to complete his comeback ride in seventh. Marquez labelled his Portimao race as the “biggest step in my recovery” and couldn’t contain his emotions when he returned to his team after the grand prix. “Of course, emotions is the correct word,” he said when asked by Motorsport.com if he ever thought today was possible. “I’m a person who likes to keep the emotions inside, but when I arrived in the box with all my mechanics I just exploded and I couldn’t control the emotions. “[It] has been a very long time that I’ve been … [Read more...] about Marquez “exploded” with emotion after “dream” comeback
Quartararo ‘feels like 2019’ after Portimao MotoGP win
Quartararo stormed to his second-successive race win in 2021 by 4.8 seconds at the Algarve International Circuit to open up a 15-point lead in the championship after three rounds. Quartararo made a similarly strong start to his 2020 campaign, but was a lowly 14th at the Algarve track last season after the Portuguese venue proved to be one of Yamaha's weakest. Admitting pre-season he was wary about the low-grip Algarve track causing the Yamaha to suffer its usual issues in those conditions, Quartararo was strong across the entire Portimao weekend. "Yes, I feel honestly like [I did in] 2019," Quartararo said. "The bike is working so well and I have the same [bike as Qatar]. "We didn't touch the bike. We arrived here, it's exactly the same bike as Qatar, [only] changing a few things. But we never asked ourselves 'should we try this'. And 2019 was like this and you can see the difference between Qatar and here, it's totally different tracks. "So that means the bike is … [Read more...] about Quartararo ‘feels like 2019’ after Portimao MotoGP win
