F1 Paddock Diary: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix day two – RaceFans
Formula 1 is poised to announce Pirelli has been confirmed as the sport’s tyre supplier for the 2020 to 2023 seasons, as @DieterRencken reveals in his paddock diary from the Yas Marina Circuit. 9am Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Up and about in my hotel room at the equivalent of 6am, in keeping with my anti-jetlag regime of sticking as close to home time as possible – a task made all the easier in Abu Dhabi by the race’s dusk timing: for example first practice, which usually commences at 10 or 11am on Friday, is scheduled for 1pm. Thus I have plenty of time for my morning routines before heading out for the circuit at 10am 10:30am Arrive at the circuit, settle in before taking a wander through the paddock, hopeful of gaining more insight into the Haas versus Force India protest. All I’m able to glean is that a hearing will be held at 11am, and that our previous analysis, pieced together from various bits if information from a variety of sources , … [Read more...] about F1 Paddock Diary: Abu Dhabi Grand Prix day two – RaceFans
George Russell responds to Fernando Alonso tweet after Jeddah podium confusion
George Russell has said the “correct decision” has ultimately been made in the outcome of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, even if it did cost the Mercedes driver a podium. After Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso crossed the line third, a 10-second post-race penalty was then applied after he was found to have supposedly incorrectly served a five-second penalty in his pit box, with a mechanic inadvertently touching his car with the rear jack before five seconds had elapsed. The FIA subsequently issued Alonso with a further time penalty, promoting Mercedes driver Russell into third on Sunday night – and even having the trophy for third place taken down to the Mercedes garage as a result. But after an appeal from Aston Martin, the FIA overturned its decision after the team showed multiple examples of precedent when a team member accidentally touching the car went unpunished, meaning the third place went back to Alonso – a rather unorthodox way of bringing up his 100th podium in … [Read more...] about George Russell responds to Fernando Alonso tweet after Jeddah podium confusion
MotoGP sprint races: Everything you need to know
Listen to this article Revealed last year during the Austrian Grand Prix, MotoGP is making the most radical format shake-up to a race weekend for decades in 2023. On the Saturday of all 21 rounds this season, a sprint race running to half the distance of the main grand prix will take place. It is a format tweak that is set to have major ramifications on the destiny of the 2023 world championship. Ahead of this weekend's first round of the season in Portugal, here is everything you need to know about MotoGP sprint races. Why is MotoGP running sprint races? Alex Rins, Team Suzuki MotoGP leads at the start Photo by: Dorna MotoGP is currently trying to re-position itself in the motorsport landscape amidst a drop in interest in the series. The series tried to boost this by releasing a behind-the-scenes docuseries entitled MotoGP Unlimited on Amazon Prime in March. But the series was deemed a failure and a second season of it was shelved not long into filming. … [Read more...] about MotoGP sprint races: Everything you need to know
Exclusive: Logan Sargeant’s quest to win the hearts of the American public
Williams rookie Logan Sargeant is aiming to help with the growth of Formula 1 in the United States as he finds his feet in the sport. The Florida-born racer has only completed his first two Grand Prix weekends in Formula 1, having stepped up to the big leagues with Williams after signing as a Williams junior in 2021. Having become America’s first full-time F1 racing driver since Scott Speed 16 years ago, Sargeant has arrived into the sport without the nationalistic fanfare that other recent rookies have enjoyed, but, at a time when US interest in Formula 1 is at an all-time high, Sargeant is hopeful of capturing the imagination of the American public who have gone so long without a driver to cheer on. Sargeant sat down for a conversation with PlanetF1.com on the eve of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, a weekend that would turn out to be one to forget after a troubled qualifying. Having had a strong debut weekend in Bahrain, en route to 12th place overall, it’s clear the 22-year-old … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Logan Sargeant’s quest to win the hearts of the American public
Mercedes making “bigger gains than we have for a long time” with car development · RaceFans
Mercedes are making faster progress in developing their 2023 car having accepted they needed a change of concept, says team principal Toto Wolff. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The team realised it needed to change tack with its development following the uncompetitive start to its 2023 season in Bahrain. Having persisted with a novel interpretation of F1’s latest technical regulations throughout last season and into the beginning of this year, Wolff says the team is “storming full steam ahead now and changing things” with its W14. Although the team enjoyed a slightly more competitive weekend in Jeddah, where George Russell qualified within six tenths of a second of pole winner Sergio Perez, Wolff said that hasn’t led the team to doubt its decision to revise its design philosophy. “That doesn’t make it a millimetre better,” said Wolff. “I think that we are always looking at the benchmark performance and that is [Max] Verstappen and Perez, and it’s … [Read more...] about Mercedes making “bigger gains than we have for a long time” with car development · RaceFans
Christian Horner explains why Jeddah was Sergio Perez’s best performance
Red Bull boss Christian Horner hailed Sergio Perez’s Saudi Arabian GP as his best race yet, but why exactly does he think that? From the outside looking in of course, it is very easy to agree with that suggestion on a weekend that began with Perez making it back-to-back Saudi Arabian GP poles, while Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen was forced to start P15 after a driveshaft failure eliminated him from qualifying. And unlike on Formula 1’s last visit to Jeddah, this time Perez converted that pole position into the race win, keeping his team-mate at bay comfortably after a Safety Car restart which had bunched the pack up, Verstappen ultimately taking P2. Horner said in several interviews after the race that this was Perez’s best display yet, and appearing on the F1 Nation podcast, he repeated this opinion. “An amazing weekend of great recovery, obviously, after the difficulties with Max yesterday, so 15th to second and Checo his his fifth career victory, fourth victory for us, … [Read more...] about Christian Horner explains why Jeddah was Sergio Perez’s best performance
RacingLines: What is and isn’t behind F1’s share price moves – RaceFans
Last month we outlined how precariously Formula 1’s fortunes hinge upon its share price , in turn driven by factors surrounding the sport and the subsequent opinions of investment analysts. Yet, many of these have seldom – if ever – seen a grand prix live or on TV, and base their (critical) analyses on developments that profoundly affect stock value. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free In a nutshell, uncertainty immediately knocks the price; positive, hard news gradually boosts it. At the time we flagged two dates: November 8th, on which F1’s commercial rights holder Liberty Media would field investor calls on Q3 earnings; and November 14th, Liberty Media’s Annual Investor Day, at which the results and prospects of group entities are presented to shareholders. F1 in particular seemed to leave the investment community distinctly lukewarm. During the investor call F1’s share prices – A Class FWONA and C Class FWONK – dipped. Steeper falls followed the call’s … [Read more...] about RacingLines: What is and isn’t behind F1’s share price moves – RaceFans
