Making 100k a year
► CAR’s BMW i8 long-term test review ► Hybrid i8 costs £105k; 0-62 in 4.4sec ► Our conclusion after seven monthsBMW’s designers must regularly frequent a five-star hotel that has its sole sun lounger in a fenced-off recess under a small, sharp-edged flight of stairs. That, at least, is the only reason I can imagine to explain why the absurd access to the i8 was deemed tolerable.A knack for graceful entrances and exits does gradually develop over time, but the i8’s doors still occasionally elicited a sigh – particularly on those nights when you’d traipse off a jam-packed train, into the car park and find it hemmed in by other cars.Going to be using it regularly? Invest in some yoga classes to prepare yourself for when you need to post yourself through a tiny aperture to get into it (see inelegant demonstration below). That, however, proved to be about the only major issue with using the i8 – an advanced carbonfibre-tubbed … [Read more...] about BMW i8 verdict: we live with one for half a year
Only three automakers lost retail market share last year, as the market for new cars struggled back from the depths of “Carpocalypse.” Battered as it was by a recall scandal that engulfed most of the auto media coverage for the first half of the year, Toyota’s 1.2% dip came as little surprise. But with all the positive spin surrounding GM and Chrysler, the bailed-out automakers loss of 1.8% and .6% retail market share was a pretty huge disappointment. Ford, on the other hand, drew a huge distinction from its cross-town rivals, recording the second-largest growth in retail market share of all automakers in the US market, snagging an additional 1.2% of the market. Projecting 2010’s trends forward a year (a speculative exercise, no doubt) Ford would actually surpass GM in terms of retail market share, putting it second only to Toyota (and within spitting distance (.3%) of first place). As the bailed-out automakers lose ground in the battle for consumers (rather … [Read more...] about Year-End Sales Report: Ford
Art writes:Sajeev and Steve,5 months ago I bought myself something of a quarter-life crisis gift – a CPO 2008 Honda S2000. I love this car to death, which is why I was left heartbroken when it was rear-ended quite badly as part of a 5 car accident on the wonderful roads of Los Angeles. Thankfully I’m OK and insurance is picking up the $5300 tab to fix the car, but the whole incident has put the fear of the traffic gods in me. Now, with the car in the shop for the next 2 weeks, I can’t help but think it would be better to keep the future miles off of it and get a daily driver I’m less passionate about instead. The car would be used for a ~50mi daily round-trip commute, and on weekends would be asked to support an active lifestyle by hauling a bike or two on a roof-mount or hitch-mount bike rack. I’m aiming for something of a comfortable cruiser and would of course like to spend as little as possible, up to 8 or 10k.The W202 C-Class Mercedes has … [Read more...] about New or Used: for Ten Thousand Dollars, You could buy a Million Pennies!
Matt writes:Sajeev and Steve,I think it’s time to replace my wife’s 2005 Honda Odyssey EX-L. It’s got 48,000 on the clock and has developed a few problems over the years. Power side doors that get wonky on really cold days, a slow leak in the AC system, a leak somewhere around the windshield, and an intermittent airbag light most recently, to name a few. None of these things is that big a deal, but considering that my wife has held a grudge against me for convincing her to buy a minivan in the first place, they are just mounting evidence in her case to replace the Ody.Don’t get me wrong, we both admire the van. It’s a good highway cruiser, gets OK gas mileage, and can haul massive amounts of stuff. But we have no passion for it, and we’ve decided that we’re secure enough to get a vehicle that we really WANT, not just tolerate. I’m normally the type to hang on to a car for at least 100K miles, but I’ve had to hear … [Read more...] about New or Used: A Truck For My Love
As a 20 year Northern transplant, I have been told that there are 3 types of yankees here in Georgia. Most of you already know that a yankee is a northern fellow who comes down, stays for a short time, and heads back up North.A damn yankee is a northern fellow who stays… forever.A damn good yankee, is a yankee who marries another yankee and they both move back up North.I happen to be a fourth and fifth type of yankee. The one who marries a southerner and stays… which makes me a damn damn yankee. Along with this is my penchant for frugality, which makes me a damn damn cheap yankee.I don’t mind being considered any type of damn Yankee. Heck I even grew up rooting for the New York Yankees in a North Jersey neighborhood infested with Met fans. But as for being cheap…I am in certain ways. If I don’t have to spend money or buy anything, I don’t. But when it comes to cars I absolutely have to invest for rainy days where I … [Read more...] about Hammer Time: Sometimes It Pays to Be a Damn Yankee!
Officially still a concept but a sure bet for production, the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge—named after the treacherous and iconic corner at the Spa-Francorchamps race circuit in Belgium—may be hand-built, with quantities in the low hundreds and a likely six-figure price tag.In an interview with Motor Trend, Infiniti’s fearless leader Johan de Nysschen more or less confirmed these details: “I would have to say in order to set expectations, we’re probably looking at a $100,000 car. We are probably also looking at 250 to 500 units a year. So that’s low volume. And we probably have, in terms of my current expectation, only a two-year life cycle. So you have to amortize the development across that volume, and with a hand-built car, you have very high unit costs. Candidly, I assume, the current state of the business plan indicates that we will probably subsidize each car in order to keep it within reach.”Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Concept Debuts: A Bull in an … [Read more...] about GT-R-Powered Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Could Cost $100K, Be Hand-Built
TTAC Commentator Silent Ricochet writes:After almost 6 years and 55,000 mostly reliable miles, the Cavalier must go.I knew the car was aging and I thought it could make it another year. I recently graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree back in May and since then my Cavalier has been on a steep decline in terms of safety and reliability.Within the last month alone, I’ve blown three brake lines, the first of which almost resulted in my death. Today, I got the car on a lift for the first time since perhaps last summer in an attempt to fix my third blown brake line (for the rear brakes) and what my two mechanic friends and I saw was horrifying. The amount of frame rot was staggering. The two of them, with their eyes wide and mouths agape, looked at each other and then looked at me. “Why the f**k are you driving this thing?” One asked. The other said “You shouldn’t be. I’m surprised your parents let you, to be honest.” I thought they … [Read more...] about New or Used: A Used Car’s Silent Ricochet?
“I’m NOT buying that thing. It looks like one of the cars that the Nazis rode around in.”Ah, the Ford Flex. It is one of those cars that all “car people” seem to love, while the general public seems to be slow to adopt—perhaps because it looks like one of those cars the Nazis rode around in.At least that’s what Mrs. Bark said in the summer of 2013 when it became painfully obvious that our 2011 Chevrolet Equinox LT was no longer meeting the needs of our expanded family. I did a good deal of comparison test reading as well as renting of larger CUVs in my journeys around the country in those days, anticipating the day when the Equinox would need to go. I drove them all—Pathfinder, Highlander, Pilot, Traverse, and Explorer—but the one that I always loved to see in the Emerald Aisle was the Flex. National Car has several of them in the Great Lakes area airport fleets, mostly in Limited trim. I enjoyed driving them as rentals, simply … [Read more...] about Bark’s Bites: Two Years With the CUV That Flexes from Long Beach to Texas
Last month, Dodge announced the Viper GTC model. The “C” part of the name presumably stands for “custom” as paying the $10,000 premium over the base Viper give customers access to literally *millions of custom paint, interior trim, striping and wheel combinations. I’m tempted to say that truly custom, or as our British cousins like to say, bespoke, items can’t be ordered from a list, but the heart of what Dodge is promoting as the Viper 1 of 1 program is a color palette of 8,000 hand-sprayed exterior color paint options. I worked in an automotive paint research and development lab for more than 20 years. Eight thousand colors is a huge selection and one of the features of the 1 of 1 program is that once an exterior color is picked, that will be the only Viper painted that color for the model year, making it a true one of one collectible. Ironically, though, the rainbow colored Viper they used to promote the program at the Chicago Auto Show … [Read more...] about That’s A Wrap – Dodge Promotes 1 of 1 Bespoke Paint Option With Vinyl Wrapped Viper
