Red Bull's winning streak came to an end in Singapore last weekend, with Carlos Sainz scoring an emphatic victory for Ferrari from pole position. However, all signs point to the status quo returning at Suzuka, with the Honda-powered Red Bull squad favourite to take top honors in front of Japanese fans. Max Verstappen won last time out at Suzuka, leading a 1-2 for Red Bull ahead of Sergio Perez. The previous six races in Japan, dating back to the start of the V6 hybrid era in 2014, were all won by Mercedes. 2023 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix session timings in different timezones Session GMT BST CEST ET PT AEST JST IST FP1 02:30 03:30 04:30 22:30 19:30 12:30 11:30 08:00 FP2 06:00 07:00 08:00 02:00 23:00 16:00 15:00 11:30 FP3 02:30 03:30 04:30 22:30 19:30 12:30 11:30 08:00 Q 06:00 07:00 08:00 02:00 23:00 … [Read more...] about 2023 F1 Japanese Grand Prix session timings and preview

Where will the next F1 stars come from?
How can our sport identify and nurture the best driving talents and bring them to F1? What is the best way to evaluate a young driver? One of the eye catching lines Bernie Ecclestone came out with recently in an interview with my Financial Times colleague Christian Sylt was a dismissal of the revived Formula 2 series as merely something Max Mosley came up with when he was going through “a problem with his private life “ last summer. It was “all done for the wrong reasons,” he said. While it is true that F2 was announced in the midst of the Mosley/News of the World situation, on closer inspection it is a serious project and it could turn out to be a threat to GP2, which is why Bernie was scathing. I spent some time recently with the man charged with running the series for the FIA, ex F1 driver Jonathan Palmer, and got a look at what he and the FIA think is the model for the future of motor sport. Bringing a driver up to F1 level is very expensive; it costs £600,000 for a … [Read more...] about Where will the next F1 stars come from?

Racing school founder Jim Russell dies
After serving in the RAF and then creating a garage business with his brother Peter, Russell came to motor racing after visiting a meeting at his local track, Snetterton. At the age of 32, he decided that he wanted to take part, and so bought a Cooper MkVI with a JAP engine for the 1952 season. His competitiveness improved when he fitted a Manx Norton engine into the chassis and wins started to come by August 1953. Russell claimed three 500cc BRSCC National Formula 3 titles between 1955-1957.He won 64 F3 races throughout his driving career, 11 Formula 2 events and six sportscar races. But his driving career was halted by a serious crash at Le Mans in 1959. During the night, Brian Naylor had rolled his Aston Martin at Maison Blanche. Although Naylor escaped, Russell's Cooper Monaco struck the abandoned car and he was left with broken legs and ribs, plus minor burns. He did return to the cockpit briefly in 1961, but then decided to hang up his gloves. In 1966, Russell was … [Read more...] about Racing school founder Jim Russell dies
Verstappen: Red Bull F1 car “enjoyable to drive again” after Singapore struggle
Verstappen led both of Friday's free practice sessions for the Japanese Grand Prix, ending the day 0.320 seconds clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and nearly half a second up on McLaren's Lando Norris . The Dutchman came out of the gates strong in FP1 as he recovered from an off-kilter weekend at last week's Singapore GP, where he struggled to make Q3 and then finished fifth, consigning Red Bull to its first defeat of the 2023 season. "It felt really good today. From lap one the car was enjoyable to drive again," Verstappen said. "It seems like we had a strong day, on short runs, long runs... There's a lot of degradation on this track, so it will be quite tough on tyres in the race. But so far we had a good start to the weekend."
