Listen to this article It has also prompted many industries to evaluate the impact that advancement in AI technology will have on them in the next few years – both in terms of how it can be successfully exploited, and where it could also replace humans. Formula 1 doesn't escape this, with teams already using AI across a wide range of its activities – including car setups, development directions and resource deployment. It's playing a part in race strategy planning too, and that has opened some debate about whether or not the robots can take over the pitwall entirely. After all, it shouldn't crack under pressure. It should in theory deliver the right answers based on evaluating a data set far wider than a human could ever get through, and it would never … [Read more...] about Amid ChatGPT buzz, is AI ready to take over Formula 1 strategy?

Do Formula 1 team-mates really need to be best friends?
Listen to this article Only four of the 10 teams have an unchanged driver line-up - Red Bull, Ferrari , Mercedes and Alfa Romeo - meaning the remaining six will have spent much of this winter getting their new signing up to speed, learning the ropes and embedded within their team. But it will also leave drivers facing new dynamics to work with. Team-mate relationships are often in the spotlight in F1, especially when things go wrong. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez ’s fall-out at Interlagos over team orders being one of the most explosive examples last year, although Red Bull has since stressed everything has been patched up, the line-up set to continue for another two seasons. A couple of the new line-ups for 2023 will be of particular interest for fans this year, given the history between the drivers involved: Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon at Alpine ; and Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen at Haas. As much as modern-day F1’s desire for drama may … [Read more...] about Do Formula 1 team-mates really need to be best friends?

But after Nikita Mazepin’s contract was terminated in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Magnussen returned to Haas on a multi-year deal. The Dane finished fifth in his comeback race in Bahrain, and went on to score a shock maiden pole in Brazil towards the end of the year. Haas team boss Gunther Steiner told Motorsport.com in an interview that he thought Magnussen was “ mentally a lot stronger” since returning to F1 , in part due to his added experience and becoming a father in his time away. In an interview with select media including Motorsport.com, Magnussen said he felt his own expectations and personal pressure had eased, causing a shift in his mindset. “The biggest pressure is my own expectation,” Magnussen explained. “Ever since I was a little child, I’ve … [Read more...] about Magnussen: Previous pressure in Formula 1 felt “very scary”

How years in Mercedes’ F1 simulator are “bearing fruit” for Formula E rookie Hughes · RaceFans
Jake Hughes distinguished himself on his Formula E debut by taking third place on the grid and fifth at the chequered flag following a race-long scrap with a series champion Lucas di Grassi . Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free That was well beyond the performance he expected after his McLaren team tested Formula E’s new ‘Gen3’ car for the first time in Spain last year. “Valencia obviously went pretty well but Valencia is not really in Formula E terms a representative place,” Hughes told RaceFans from Diriyah, where the championship’s second round is taking place. “That being said, you can definitely draw a lot of positives from Valencia going into Mexico, and that’s what we did. But I don’t think we had any idea how we would fare in Mexico, both from a one-lap point of view and an energy management point of view, how the powertrain is with our supplier Nissan. Imagining ‘Formula X’ · RaceFans
Has Formula one lost sight of its purpose to be the ultimate form of motor racing with cars at the absolute cutting edge of technology? The FIA’s recent plans to reduce teams’ use of wind tunnels is just the latest in a long line of steps taken to reduce the development of Formula 1 cars. What if a new formula was created – ‘Formula X’ – in which no limits were placed on cars’ technology, dimensions, engine sizes or anything else? In 2003 F1 Racing magazine and Williams envisaged a restriction-free Formula 1 car. With six wheels and ground effect aerodynamics, they projected it would lap Silverstone 13s faster than an F1 car of 2003 (around 11.5s faster than today). This was despite it having the same engine of the time (3.0 litre V10), grooved tyres and the same minimum weight limit – all of which could be improved upon even further were they de-restricted. But what would the consequences be of racing cars to the ‘ultimate’ Formula X regulations? G forces First of … [Read more...] about Imagining ‘Formula X’ · RaceFans

In a race of strategic decisions, Werhlein did not chase down those ahead early on and waited for the leading trio to activate attack mode for the first time. Evans did so first, dropping him to third, then new leader Hughes did the same a lap later and it promoted his McLaren team mate Rene Rast into first place. When Rast activated attack mode he was able to remain ahead, and with the … [Read more...] about Wehrlein takes Formula E points lead with second Saudi win · RaceFans
