A Boston City Council committee heard public support for lowering the city’s speed limit to 20 mph Tuesday, and nearly all who testified said the measure should be welcomed alongside other mechanisms to enhance safety on increasingly congested city streets. The proposed speed reduction, put forth by councilors Ed Flynn and Frank Baker, comes nearly two years after officials decreased the limit from 30 to 25 mph. Flynn said Tuesday a 20 mph cap would reduce the chances of a pedestrian suffering a fatal or serious injury in a motor vehicle crash to 18 percent. Before the limit was lowered from 30 mph last year, that risk was significantly greater, at 50 percent, according to a study cited by city officials. Vehicle traffic is still too fast, he said. “Hardly a day goes by when my friends, neighbors, constituents, and even my elderly parents, often walking my special needs nephew, that they don’t tell me about speeding vehicles and close calls in a crosswalk,” … [Read more...] about Should the Boston speed limit be 20 mph? WORLD Car Free Day is an initiative which aims to rid congested cities of vehicles and pollution for at least 24 hours every year. Let’s take a look at the event which London is taking part in. When is World Car Free Day 2018? The event takes place in and around September 22 every year after becoming a global programme promoted by the World Carfree Network (WCN) in 2000. What is the aim of the initiative? The project wants cities to move away from a “car-dominated society” in a bid to reduce pollution and congestion. In London, planners hope to the event will encourage children to safely play in traffic-free roads. Entire streets are closed to traffic on September 22 in cities around the world. The World Carfree Network says the day should be a “showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars…365 days a year.” It goes on to say that the initiative could pressure “city planners and politicians to … [Read more...] about When is World Car Free Day 2018, what is it about and what cities and countries are taking part?

Recently, a friend of mine asked for some help finding a new car. As you might imagine, it's not an uncommon request. However, this particular request came with a requirement I hadn't come across before: It had to be made by the UAW. You see, her mother had been a proud UAW member and there'd be great familial discord if she came home with a Subaru — even if it was made in Indiana. That got me digging into just how many cars, trucks and SUVs are actually produced by the UAW. It's not as easy to ID as it once was, since American-branded cars are built all over the place.Dodge Challenger, Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Edge and Chevy Impala. Many UAW loyalists (for lack of a better term) generally give these union-made cars their OK.Others, not so much, including those made in Mexico (Ford Fusion and Fiesta, heavy-duty Ram trucks, small Chevrolets, etc.), South Korea (Chevrolet Trax, Buick Encore), China (Buick Envision), Germany (Buick Regal), Poland (Buick Cascada, sensing a pattern … [Read more...] about Buying American-made and union-made vehicles: An Autoblog guide
