In motor racing there are many different disciplines a competitor can choose to do once the budget is in place or as in most cases partially, with the hope of finding the last of it as the season progresses. While there is a difference in disciplines you can really only choose two forms of cars to race, single seaters or saloons, which are also known as “Tin Tops”. Nearly all start out in single seaters and eventually end up in “Tin Tops” of some form be it Sportscars, Touring Cars or a one make club saloon series. One man who has tried them all, with results that many could only dream of having, is Michael Cullen. Michael is one of our most successful drivers to have come from these shores. While he never got the chance to race as a professional, or on the world stage as the likes of Derek Daly, David Kennedy or Tommy Byrne for example, it should not deter people from thinking of him as a top quality driver. His talent has shone through on many occasions, in … [Read more...] about Legend Series- Michael Cullen, The Tin Top King!
While some drivers have a clear idea and path they want to take in racing, with the ultimate goal of making it their profession, some purely just start off with the idea of it only being for fun and for it to remain that way. The latter certainly the case with Irish motor racing legend, Gordon Kellett. A man who has raced every form of saloon car or “Tin Top” for over forty years with tremendous success, he has managed to take race wins in every class he has competed in over the years, bar the current Ford Fiesta ST class, as he only made a comeback to racing last year, but it would be a brave man to rule him out entirely this year. Originally from County Cavan, but having lived in Dublin for the last forty years, it’s safe to say he is regarded as a “Dub” by now. It was another well known racer from days gone by, the late Norman Williams, who introduced Gordon to the world of motorsport by bringing him to Mondello Park and the Phoenix Park in Dublin, as … [Read more...] about Legends Series- Barry Meets Gordon Kellett
Ireland has a rich history in sport, and for a small nation we have always punched above our weight on the world stage, quite literally in recent years, with the magnificent Katie Taylor showing her class becoming World Champion, along with her Olympic success. We have seen our soccer stars reach the top levels of the game, our cyclists, swimmers, rowers, athletes, jockeys, motorcyclists, rugby and hockey players all achieve top level success in their respective fields. Our motor racing heritage is no different and our current young stars like Niall Murray, Kevin O’Hara, Jordan Dempsey, James Roe Jr. and current Young Racing driver of the year Charlie Eastwood are flying the Irish flag proudly all over the world with much success today. Again, our small nation is producing such talent in numbers as we have done for decades, but while they are following their own routes within the sport, those paths have been laid before them by their forefathers in motor racing. The first of them … [Read more...] about Legend Series- Barry meets David Kennedy
