Trump ally Kari Lake wins GOP primary for Arizona governor

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 PHOENIX (AP) — Kari Lake, a former news anchor who walked away from her journalism career and was embraced by Donald Trump and his staunch supporters, won the Republican primary for Arizona governor on Thursday. Lake's victory was a blow to the GOP establishment that lined up behind lawyer and businesswoman Karrin Taylor Robson in an attempt to push their party past the chaotic Trump era. Lake said she would not have certified President Joe Biden's 2020 victory and put false claims of election fraud at the center of her campaign. “Arizonans who have been forgotten by the establishment just delivered a political earthquake,” Lake said in a statement after the race was called. Republicans now enter the general election sprint with a slate of nominees closely allied with Trump who deny that Biden was legitimately elected president. Lake will face Democratic Secretary of … [Read more...] about Trump ally Kari Lake wins GOP primary for Arizona governor

Lappi explains Finland emergency lake visit to secure strangest WRC podium

August 7, 2022 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Lappi was seemingly on his way to a comfortable third place finish on home soil when drama struck in Sunday’s penultimate stage. The Finn got caught in a rut at a left hander which pitched his GR Yaris into a roll, with the car rotating three times before landing on its wheels. The crash ripped the rear wing from the car, smashed the windscreen and damaged the radiator. It was the second time that Lappi had to contend with a broken windscreen during the event. However, Lappi managed to re-fire the car and reached the stage end, losing only 18s in the process. With power steering oil and fluid escaping from the car, a quick-thinking Lappi picked up some water bottles at stage end, before driving to a nearby lake to gather more water to re-fill the radiator. While stopped at the lake, Lappi and co-driver Janne Ferm worked to fix the leaks and removed the broken windscreen, before heading to the final stage with the pair forced to wear … [Read more...] about Lappi explains Finland emergency lake visit to secure strangest WRC podium

(AP) — The man accused of killing seven people and wounding dozens more in a shooting at an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, a week after prosecutors announced he faces 117 felony counts in the attack. Robert E. Crimo III appeared for a brief hearing Wednesday in Lake County's circuit court to enter a formal plea to the charges — 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery representing those killed and wounded during the parade in Highland Park. Crimo wore a COVID-19 face mask throughout the 10-minute arraignment and repeatedly told Judge Victoria Rossetti that he understood the charges and potential penalties he faces, including life imprisonment. FACT FOCUS: Why final election results take days, not hours

August 5, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

As election workers spend long hours tallying ballots in Arizona and elsewhere in the days after Tuesday’s primary elections, some critics are arguing they should be finished counting by now. Widely shared Twitter posts this week called the delayed results “corrupt” and “unacceptable,” while Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake in a press conference on Wednesday said Arizona voters should know the winner “when they go to bed on election night.” She repeated that gripe during a radio interview Friday, the day after the AP declared her victory in the primary, saying “we had days of waiting to get the ballots counted. It’s a mess.” These complaints ignore the realities of modern-day ballot processing, which requires extensive time and labor, according to election officials and experts. In fact, states have never reported official election results on election night, experts say. Here’s a closer look at the facts. CLAIM: In the past, election results have been released on … [Read more...] about FACT FOCUS: Why final election results take days, not hours

Cancellation of Atlanta festival sparks new fight over guns

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 ATLANTA (AP) — Tens of thousands of Music Midtown festivalgoers are no longer going to descend on Atlanta’s massive Piedmont Park next month to cheer on hip-hop star Future or watch beloved rock band My Chemical Romance take the stage. In fact, some people are convinced Atlanta — center of the nation’s hip-hop music scene — will lose more music festivals and performances on public land as organizers and artists learn that state law makes it nearly impossible for them to stop people from carrying guns among the alcohol-fueled crowds. That prospect has ignited a new fight over gun rights in Georgia that is roiling the governor’s race, casting a shadow over Atlanta’s vaunted music scene and adding to tension between the city and state. Live Nation has refused to say why it recently called off September’s Music Midtown, a longtime fixture for pop music lovers. Montgomery ISD installs school bathrooms sensors to detect gunshots, vape smoke

August 11, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Students and staff at two Montgomery ISD schools will have a hard time sneaking in a smoke break thanks to new vape-detecting technology installed in district bathrooms. According to an ABC 13 report published Thursday, the district has placed 23 sensors in six bathrooms at Montgomery and Lake Creek high schools. The units are Halo Smart Sensors, which the company site describes as a "vape detector, an air quality monitor and a complete security device for privacy areas where you do not want to use a camera or microphone." The devices provide automated air quality reports that "allow building owners and administrators to demonstrate they are providing a healthy indoor environment," according to the site. Halo's sensors can also detect THC and chemicals, lighting levels, room occupancy, as well as gunshots, "aggression" and spoken keywords via two mics built for audio analysis, not live recording. Montgomery ISD board of trustees members approved roughly $49,000 in … [Read more...] about Montgomery ISD installs school bathrooms sensors to detect gunshots, vape smoke

Newsom: California must boost water recycling, desalination

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 14 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California should invest tens of billions of dollars in water recycling, storage and desalination over the next two decades to shore up its supply as the state gets drier and hotter, Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a proposal released Thursday. It comes as drought continues to grip the U.S. West and the state prepares to lose 10% of its water supply by 2040, according to projections by the Department of Water Resources. The Democratic governor discussed the proposal at the construction site of a plant to remove salts from river water that should be fresh, the type of project he said the state needs more of in the coming years. His proposed water recycling targets, which would make treated waste water safe for drinking, would cost $27 billion by 2040, his proposal said. Top Chef finalist Evelyn Garcia to headline dinner at Houston’s Asia Society

August 11, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Houston's own Evelyn Garcia has not rested on her laurels since she made it to the finale of "Top Chef" season 19 in June. In fact, she's busier than ever with pop-ups all over town and preparing to open her first full-service restaurant. The latest event Garcia is appearing at is a dinner at Asia Society in the Museum District on Aug. 27, which she curated along with her business partner, Henry Lu. Called "Homegrown Houston: A Tasting Tour," the affair brings nine local concepts under one roof, including Garcia and Lu's own, By Kin. "Food is so universal, broadly appealing and approachable," Asia Society's director of performing arts and culture Michael Buening said, adding that food creates dialogue and is a representation of people's culture and heritage. Most of the chefs participating in Homegrown Houston are from the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community, but not all. Chefs Diane and Willet Feng of Burger-chan will serve a GMA Slider, likely a nod to … [Read more...] about Top Chef finalist Evelyn Garcia to headline dinner at Houston’s Asia Society

Bulging at the Seams: A Round Lakefront House in South Carolina Is a Local Mystery

August 13, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

A rotund lakefront house in Inman, SC , appears as if it might have had too much to eat. Bulging at the bottom, the residence has gobbled up plenty of interest around the web. “It’s kind of built a little bit like a hornet’s nest. The second floor is actually bigger than the bottom floor, and the top floors are a bit smaller,” explains listing agent Leslie Horne , with Leslie Horne & Associates. “It gets a lot of attention. It’s been called everything from a pineapple to a Bikini Bottomite from 'Sponge Bob Square Pants.' We’ve heard it all.” The home was built in 1977 and is currently available for $650,000. “It’s a landmark. Everybody on Lake Bowen knows where the round house is,” he says. “I don’t know who built it, but the guy who owns it now has owned it since the early 1990s. He started remodeling it, but never finished it.” The three-bedroom, 2.5-bath house apparently hasn’t been lived in for decades. Only one bathroom is usable and one bedroom is framed. … [Read more...] about Bulging at the Seams: A Round Lakefront House in South Carolina Is a Local Mystery
