Lord Lloyd-Webber Kt (as in Knight-Bachelor), was pressed into service by his king, HRH Charles III. The kind of service the composer of "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" knows best. His Majesty wanted a song. Or not so much a song as a composition - of a sort fit for, well, a king. For the day of his coronation, in Westminster Abbey, on May 6 in the year of our Lord 2023. So it came to pass that Lloyd Webber set down a melody to Psalm 98, the one that goes, aptly enough, "O sing to the Lord a new song." Then he gathered together his flock - "half the kids in my office," he said - and with them the Lord he madeth a demo; the Lord in this case being Lloyd Webber. To a Yank's way of thinking, it is quite the thing for a Broadway composer to turn court … [Read more...] about King Charles needed a coronation song. He summoned Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The remake of ‘Resident Evil 4’ is like reliving a cherished memory
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 "Resident Evil 4" 4 stars - - - There's little in pop culture that mirrors the intoxicating experience of a remade Resident Evil video game. It's not like a remaster of an old song, a mere technological upgrade that other video games series often do. It's not quite like a cover song either, since those are perspectives from different artists. A Resident Evil remake is experiential, probably closer to reliving your favorite concert with your favorite artist, in the same venue, all with better light rigging and sound, and everyone still has the same youthful verve. The series' ability to replicate that kind of experience has made it the gold standard of remaking video games. The remakes started with series creator and former Capcom developer Shinji Mikami's 2002 revisiting of the 1996 "Resident Evil." In 2019, series overseers Kazunori Kado and Yasuhiro Anpo revitalized the … [Read more...] about The remake of ‘Resident Evil 4’ is like reliving a cherished memory
The prosecutor, the ex-president and the ‘zombie’ case that came back to life
It was just weeks into Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's time in office, and he was being assailed on multiple fronts. A memo he had released outlining his strategy for prosecuting crimes in New York City was being vilified by critics, including the mayor and police commissioner. Bragg became a punching bag across cable news and on tabloid covers. Then two prosecutors from his office quit in protest over what they called Bragg's decision not to prosecute former president Donald Trump. People who know Bragg say he was deeply stung by the criticism. The district attorney soon issued an unusual public statement - emphasizing that the investigation into Trump and his business was far from over and that a team of investigators was "exploring evidence not previously explored." The message he wanted conveyed, it seemed, was simple: I'm still on this. Almost a year later, Bragg's investigation into one particular issue involving Trump - a payment made before the 2016 … [Read more...] about The prosecutor, the ex-president and the ‘zombie’ case that came back to life
This dissident uses Chinese-owned TikTok to criticize China’s government
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 Kim Wong, a longtime journalist in Hong Kong who now lives in the Boston area, has attracted a giant online audience with his Mandarin-language videos criticizing the Chinese government - including, he says, a substantial number of people inside China who use software tools to access information the Chinese Communist Party doesn't want them to see. And many of those videos can be found in a surprising place: TikTok, the wildly popular short-video app owned by Chinese company ByteDance that the U.S. government has claimed could serve as a megaphone for pro-Communist propaganda. Wong says he understands and supports the calls to ban TikTok in the United States because of its potential for misuse by the Chinese state. But he also calls TikTok a uniquely powerful tool for reaching young Mandarin-speaking people around the world. Blocking it would close off an … [Read more...] about This dissident uses Chinese-owned TikTok to criticize China’s government
Trump and ‘Joker 2’ collide in New York. Or is that Gotham City?
NEW YORK - After a week-long media circus surrounding the grand jury that may soon indict former president Donald Trump, the fake news finally arrived. Actual fake news, in the form of made-up Gotham City TV stations. On Saturday and Sunday, the production for the sequel to 2019's "Joker" - a film about a psychopathic criminal who becomes an inadvertent populist hero and throws a fictional New York into chaos - staged multiple scenes of mass protests (accompanied by Gotham City media coverage) in Lower Manhattan. Just across the street was the courthouse where Trump is facing possible criminal charges regarding hush-money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign. The former president had called on social media for his followers to "PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK" and warned of "death and destruction" if he was indicted. But the 700 extras playing pro- or anti-Joker demonstrators over two days of the movie shoot easily outnumbered the pro-Trump … [Read more...] about Trump and ‘Joker 2’ collide in New York. Review: ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ puts the funny in fantasy
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 “You’re not a lot of fun, are you,” notes barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) to brave fighter Xenk (Regé-Jean Page) in the new “Dungeons & Dragons” film, making two jokes at once. The first is that Xenk, a paladin (or holy knight) in “D&D” lingo, is everything BUT fun — gorgeous, noble, heroic, smart, and did we mention gorgeous? He’s just REALLY not fun, or funny. He’s so not funny, it’s hilarious. The second, broader joke is that “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” hotly awaited by devotees of the decades-old role-playing game, makes darned sure to be fun, and funny — enough to laugh at itself. And that's the thing that makes it work. At least, for a newbie like me. I’ve never played the game, I confess. But this is a movie, not a game, and I’m here to tell you how it works for over two hours at the … [Read more...] about Review: ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ puts the funny in fantasy
