For an East Texas high school junior who just pulled into Houston, it was beyond his imagination. “I looked up at the ceiling just in awe,” Emmett said Monday afternoon as thousands of Houstonians trickled into the Astrodome. That sense of wonder was replayed over and over again on Monday afternoon as thousands walked back into the stadium. 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix team radio transcript · RaceFans
The tension was cranked up to eleven on the Mercedes pit wall as the laps ticked down towards the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team was in the unprecedented situation of having both its cars in the lead but one of them actively trying to prevent them finishing first and second. As Lewis Hamilton backed off more and more as he hoped someone would put a pass on his team mate, Mercedes’ calls for him to pick up the pace grew ever more urgent, They reached a peak when executive director for technical Paddy Lowe took over the microphone from Hamilton’s race engineer Peter Bonnington and demanded the race leader improve his pace. But the calls of the pit wall proved impotent – Hamilton simply ignored them. Meanwhile second-placed Nico Rosberg was grasping at straws as he called on Mercedes to do something about his team mate. His suggestion that Hamilton be told to let him through must rank as the year’s most optimistic radio message. But ten laps later the chequered … [Read more...] about 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix team radio transcript · RaceFans
The #1 curse MotoGP’s world champion hopes to break in 2023
Listen to this article Though Ducati shot its bolt a day early by accidentally revealing 2022 MotoGP title winner Francesco Bagnaia would be running the #1 on its website, that fact was finally confirmed on Monday morning at the Italian marque's launch event in the Dolomites. And thus the debate over the draw of the #1 plate continues: fans either feel passionate that a world champion must carry the #1 plate, as if it were some sort of birthright or – like this writer – you don't really care either way. The #1 hasn't appeared on the front of a MotoGP bike since 2012, when Casey Stoner rode what would be his final season in the series with the number to mark his second world title. It's fitting, then, that Bagnaia – who ended Ducati's 15-year drought last season since Stoner's first world title in 2007 – picks up the mantle for 2023 on his Desmosedici. The arguments for and against are convincing in their own right. Those who are in favour of it call out the fact that … [Read more...] about The #1 curse MotoGP’s world champion hopes to break in 2023
What next for F1 after FOM’s broadside to Ben Sulayem
Listen to this article Rather than it being a side story to F1’s ongoing Netflix-era soap opera, it potentially marks the start of a change of dynamic in the way the championship is run. While in public there has long been a united front between FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, paddock regulars know that things have been different behind the scenes. Away from the spotlight of television cameras, microphones and journalists’ notebooks, tensions have been simmering away for months now. Although many of the clashes of opinion between the FIA’s top man and chiefs at F1 owners Liberty Media were previously dealt with amicably behind closed doors without the need for dirty laundry to be aired in public, things have taken a big turn this week. Indeed, F1’s angry letter to Ben Sulayem about his remarks of an ‘inflated’ $20 billion price tag for the series has effectively made what one senior paddock source says is now ‘open warfare’ between F1’s … [Read more...] about What next for F1 after FOM’s broadside to Ben Sulayem
How Hamilton has changed as an F1 driver at Mercedes
Listen to this article But what is notably different between the current seven-time champion and the driver who joined the squad back in 2013 as a single title winner is his approach. His years of experience at Brackley, through many highs and lows, has given Hamilton a wealth of data to fall back on; and the knowledge to know where best his efforts should be focused. Nobody is perhaps better placed within Mercedes to offer insight in to how Hamilton was evolved as a driver than the team’s trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin. As the man who has been at a coal face in leading the engineering aspects of Hamilton and Mercedes’ title ambitions, he has noticed an interesting evolution. “I’ve worked with Lewis now for a long time and he is a driver who has a really impressive feel for what the car is doing,” Shovlin told Motorsport.com in an exclusive interview. “If you can get the car where he needs it to be, we know far and well what he’s capable of. And, … [Read more...] about How Hamilton has changed as an F1 driver at Mercedes
Playoff-clinching win exorcises Texans’ demons
CINCINNATI - After nine years, three months and almost 157 games as the franchise that could not, the Houston Texans were two minutes, 33 seconds, 80 yards and seven points from becoming the franchise that could. A drive, a touchdown and an extra point from what could be a historic win. And with play after play in this hopeful march to glory, the Texans seemed to wash away so many years of frustration. A one-handed snare by an indomitable tight end erased dropped-ball memories of yesteryear. A gutsy 17-yard scramble by an extraordinarily calm rookie expunged nightmares of shuddering quarterbacks from days gone by. Clutch catches by an often-overlooked wideout eradicated the deep-rooted reminiscences of failures galore. When T.J. Yates and Kevin Walter finally connected for the game-winning score with 2 seconds remaining to silence the small crowd at Paul Brown Stadium, this never-say-die team from a so-often-dead organization had delivered a victory for the ages. … [Read more...] about Playoff-clinching win exorcises Texans’ demons
Lewis Hamilton contract: Toto Wolff provides insight into planned contract negotiations
As Toto Wolff assesses the task of finalising a new Lewis Hamilton contract, he expects it to be a pretty quick job. With Hamilton’s existing deal set to conclude at the end of 2023, and the seven-time World Champion committed to Formula 1 for a good while longer yet, it makes agreeing on a new deal a priority for both parties. After initially signing a one-year deal for 2021 shortly before pre-season testing, Hamilton later that year signed the multi-year extension which runs until the end of F1 2023. And to finalise a deal that commits Hamilton to Mercedes beyond that time, team boss Wolff says all they need is a few hours of wrestling and the job will be done. “We have a full year to go,” Wolff said. “We’re so aligned. “In the last 10 years our relationship has grown that it’s just a matter of him physically being back in Europe, sticking our heads together, wrestling a bit and then leaving the room with white smoke after a few hours.” PlanetF1.com recommends Lewis … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton contract: Toto Wolff provides insight into planned contract negotiations
Wolff: New Hamilton F1 deal will be sorted in a “few hours”
Listen to this article Hamilton revealed at the end of last year that he planned to sign off on a contract extension with Mercedes over the winter, with his current deal coming to an end in 2023. Speaking to selected media including Motorsport.com at the United States Grand Prix, Hamilton had said: “We are going to do another deal. “We're going to sit down and we're going to discuss it in these next couple of months, I would say.” But despite both parties being eager to get things sorted to avoid contract talks distracting it from the forthcoming season, nothing has yet been agreed. That is mainly because Hamilton and Wolff went their own separate ways for Christmas holidays and they have not been in each other’s company since. However, ahead of February’s car launch and the start of pre-season testing, Wolff anticipated that the opportunity would come up for them to get things across the line. “We have a full year to go,” said Wolff. “We're so aligned. … [Read more...] about Wolff: New Hamilton F1 deal will be sorted in a “few hours”
Ross Brawn: Mystery F1 team sceptics left ‘eating humble pie’ over new rules
Outgoing Formula 1 managing director of motorsports Ross Brawn has declared the sport’s 2022 rule changes a resounding success and claimed those who doubted the revised regulations – including some high-profile technical directors – were left eating humble pie. Last season marked the start of a new era in F1 as the return to ground effect aerodynamics resulted in cars that were able to follow more closely – and therefore overtake more easily – on track. In his role within the Formula 1 organisation, Brawn was seen as the orchestrator of the new rules with the former Ferrari and Mercedes man surrounding himself with trusted technical minds – including Nikolas Tombazis and Pat Symonds – to deliver the most thoroughly researched regulation changes in the sport’s history. The technical changes came after the introduction of F1’s first-ever budget cap in 2021. In an interview with Motor Sport Magazine , Brawn has revealed that F1’s plans for last season encountered some resistance … [Read more...] about Ross Brawn: Mystery F1 team sceptics left ‘eating humble pie’ over new rules
