EU offers U.K. helping hand, but no reopening of Brexit
Raf Casert and Jill Lawless Associated Press Published 8:09 PM EST Jan 11, 2019 Bucharest, Romania – European Union officials are working with Britain on ways to help Prime Minister Theresa May avoid a no-deal British departure from the bloc, although an EU leader insisted Friday that his helping hand won’t include any renegotiation of the Brexit divorce deal. As speculation grew that Britain might have to delay its exit from the bloc beyond the March 29 deadline, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said “we are checking with Downing Street what the clarifications could amount to” that might help May get her Brexit deal approved by Britain’s Parliament next week. But, Juncker added: “They should not be confused with a renegotiation.” An EU official said the bloc and the British government “are in contact at all levels … to make sure that the deal goes through.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity … [Read more...] about EU offers U.K. helping hand, but no reopening of Brexit
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio review: a practical Italian SUV with supercar performance
There’s a particular style of writing found exclusively in Alfa Romeo press presentations, thematically similar to GK Chesterton’s nonsense verse but structurally reminiscent of James Joyce’s Ulysses. Simperingly grandiose and at times completely incomprehensible, it is the Vogon poetry of the automotive world and one of few real hazards in the otherwise charmed life of a car critic. Predictably, the promotional material for the Stelvio Quadrifoglio - a souped-up version of the Stelvio SUV - is egregious in its impenetrability. “Performance has reclaimed the throne,” booms a caption. “Stelvio Quadrifoglio immerses the pilot and all those on board into a race-like experience with a higher perspective, redefining what performance is.” Fantastic. But what happens when you strip away these layers of nonsense - the ‘passion’, the ‘heritage’, the ‘emotion’ - and look at the metal itself? How does this car stack up … [Read more...] about Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio review: a practical Italian SUV with supercar performance
All-New 2019 Audi A6 Avant Performs Admirably In First Review
Since its unveiling back in April, the 2019 Audi A6 Avant is finally ready to be put through its paces by automotive journalists who work in markets where Audi doesn’t shy away from selling wagons. Sadly, this means that the all-new 2019 A6 will only reach U.S. shores in 4-door sedan form, but in markets such as Europe, the Avant model will be featured heavily, as most buyers truly appreciate things such as having additional practicality. The E-Class Estate and 5-Series Touring rival was reviewed recently by Autogefuhl in 45 TFSI quattro spec. This means it’s powered by a 2.0-liter 245 PS turbocharged petrol unit, which also produces 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque. Meanwhile, helping the car get from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.8 seconds is a 7-speed S tronic gearbox. In terms of performance, the 45 TFSI model is actually a little slower than the 45 TDI, which has a little less horsepower, but plenty more torque at 500 Nm (368 lb-ft). Still, the reviewer enjoyed driving … [Read more...] about All-New 2019 Audi A6 Avant Performs Admirably In First Review
