WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal agents have searched the Virginia home of a Trump-era Justice Department official who championed efforts by President Donald Trump to overturn the results of the 2020 election and who is expected to be prominently featured in a House hearing Thursday on the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol. The reason for the search at the home of Jeffrey Clark was not immediately clear and it was not known what information agents were searching for. But it comes amid ongoing investigations into the run-up to the riot and to the spreading of false claims, inside government and out, that the presidential election had been stolen. The person who confirmed the search was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. Bill Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Washington, confirmed the existence of law enforcement activity on Wednesday in Lorton, Virginia, where Clark lives, but would not elaborate on the purpose. Trump bid to ‘corrupt’ Justice Department under spotlight
US President Donald Trump considered installing a loyalist at the top of the Justice Department after the resignation of his attorney general Bill Barr (left) WASHINGTON - Lawmakers investigating last year's attack on the US Capitol were set Thursday to lay out Donald Trump's efforts to turn the Justice Department into his "own personal" law firm in his bid to overturn his presidential election defeat to Joe Biden. At the fifth hearing into its year-long probe of the violence, the House of Representatives panel will highlight Trump's attempts "to corrupt the country's top law enforcement body, the Justice Department, to support his attempt to overturn the election," chairman Bennie Thompson said. Lawmakers will revisit tensions at the department the weekend before the January 6, 2021 insurrection, when Trump was faced with a revolt as he tried to install his own man at the top of the department. "We'll look specifically at how the president was trying to misuse the department … [Read more...] about Trump bid to ‘corrupt’ Justice Department under spotlight
Supreme Court justice wants to revisit Texas law banning same-sex intercourse
The United States Supreme Court on Friday issued a new ruling overturning Roe v. Wade , the landmark 1973 decision that established abortion as a constitutional American right. The decision marks one of the court's most significant course reversals of the last century, and effectively returns all legal matters regarding abortion law to the state level to be decided. Thirteen states, including Texas, already have trigger laws on the books structured to automatically ban nearly all forms of abortion in the event of a Supreme Court decision overturning Roe. These trigger measures, however, may be just the first ripples of a momentous shift in American jurisprudence that could see other long-held precedents forged by the high court overturned, including a previous ruling against a half-century-old Texas statute outlawing same-sex intercourse. In a separate concurring opinion published Friday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas questioned the Supreme Court's past rulings on … [Read more...] about Supreme Court justice wants to revisit Texas law banning same-sex intercourse
Justices say veteran who lost job as Texas trooper can sue state
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed a former state trooper to sue Texas over his claim that he was forced out of his job when he returned from Army service in Iraq. The justices ruled for Army veteran Le Roy Torres under a federal law that was enacted in 1994 in the wake of the Persian Gulf war to strengthen job protections for returning service members. By a 5-4 vote, the high court rejected Texas' claim that it is shielded from such lawsuits. “Text, history, and precedent show that the States, in coming together to form a Union, agreed to sacrifice their sovereign immunity for the good of the common defense,” Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the court. Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by three other conservative justices, dissented, arguing that “when the States ratified the Constitution, they did not implicitly consent to private damages actions filed in their own courts—whether authorized by Congress’ war powers or any other Article I power.” Article I … [Read more...] about Justices say veteran who lost job as Texas trooper can sue state
Washington justices blast racist questioning by prosecutor
SEATTLE (AP) — The Washington Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously overturned a man’s conviction for assaulting police officers, blasting a series of racist remarks by the prosecutor who handled the case. During jury selection in the trial against Joseph Zamora, Garth Dano, who was then the elected prosecutor in central Washington’s Grant County, repeatedly asked prospective jurors how they felt about illegal immigration, border security and crimes committed by illegal immigrants — even though Zamora was a U.S. citizen and the case had nothing to do with those topics. The questions invoked racist stereotypes that violated Zamora’s right to a fair trial, the justices said. They also expressed concern with the vicious beating officers gave Zamora, which left him comatose. Chief Justice Steven González noted that “the jury was asked to decide, among other things, whether Joseph Zamora, a United States citizen, assaulted a police officer’s knuckles with the back of his head.” “This … [Read more...] about Washington justices blast racist questioning by prosecutor

The Neuruppin Regional Court sentenced him to five years in prison. The man, who was identified by local media as Josef S., had denied working as an SS guard at the camp and aiding and abetting the murder of thousands of prisoners. In the trial, which opened in October, the centenarian said that he had worked as a farm laborer near Pasewalk in northeastern Germany during the period in question. However, the court considered it proven that he worked at the camp on the outskirts of Berlin between 1942 and 1945 as an enlisted member of the Nazi Party’s paramilitary wing, the German news agency dpa reported. “The court has come to the conclusion … [Read more...] about Germany: Former Nazi guard, 101, jailed for aiding murder

Álvarez hit a two-run homer and Kyle Tucker had three RBIs to give Houston an 8-2 win over the New York Mets in an interleague matchup between two of the top teams in the majors.
