Just as Hamilton held out in his discussions with Toto Wolff, so Senna went into 1993 without having signed a new McLaren deal with Ron Dennis. When he finally signed the initial contract covered less than a third of the season. Only later would he agree to do the remainder of the races.Throughout that year his participation each weekend was subject to a contractual clause that would keep McLaren’s legal team and accountants on their toes. If the team didn’t pay, Senna wouldn’t play… “I remember it was a million dollars a race!,” recalls then McLaren operations director Martin Whitmarsh. “In 24 and a half years I was at McLaren we were profitable in F1 and our other businesses every single year apart from 1992-'93, when we lost £1.5m, and we were paying Ayrton a million dollars a race…”The delay in putting pen to paper was primarily a result of Honda’s withdrawal from the sport, announced at Monza in September 1992.The … [Read more...] about The Senna saga that Hamilton’s new F1 deal avoids

Haas unveils launch date for its 2020 F1 car
Haas was the first team to reveal its livery for the season last year, but on this occasion is due to wait until February 19 to show off the VF-20 and its colours. The car will be unveiled at 8am local time, 15 minutes before Alfa Romeo - the other team leaving its launch until the very start of pre-season testing - takes the covers off its own 2020 car. The Haas VF-20 will be campaigned by an unchanged line-up of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean. Haas had begun the previous season with high expectations after a good pre-season showing by the VF-19, but the car proved inconsistent and in-season developments yielded little reward, consigning the team its worst-ever constructors' championship finish of ninth place. The VF-19 had run in black-and-gold livery following the arrival of Rich Energy as title sponsor. However, that deal had been terminated by September, and Haas has been tipped to return to its customary red, white and grey colours for its 2020 car. … [Read more...] about Haas unveils launch date for its 2020 F1 car
Lotterer: Dwelling on missed Toyota chance “inevitable”
Lotterer was speaking to Motorsport.com immediately after finishing a distant fourth at La Sarthe this year with Rebellion Racing, nine laps down on the winning TS050 Hybrid, with he and teammates Neel Jani and Bruno Senna matching their 2018 position. The German driver had offers to join both Porsche and Toyota’s FIA World Endurance Championship efforts when Audi terminated its LMP1 programme at the end of 2016, and in the end he opted to join Porsche. However, by mid-2017 the Weissach marque had decided to follow its sister brand out of the championship, and with no chance to join Toyota, Lotterer sought refuge with leading privateer outfit Rebellion for the 2018/19 superseason. Initial hopes of giving Toyota a run for its money with the Gibson-powered R-13 proved forlorn, and the lack of factory opposition in LMP1 cleared the way for the Japanese manufacturer to secure back-to-back Le Mans triumphs in dominant style. “Yeah, no surprise,” said Lotterer of Toyota’s … [Read more...] about Lotterer: Dwelling on missed Toyota chance “inevitable”
Haas splits with F1 title sponsor Rich Energy
While the Rich Energy deal was the inspiration behind Haas' current black-and-gold livery, the latest decision will not impact the primary colour scheme of the VF-19, which now simply run without the branding of its now-former title sponsor. The new energy drink company had come on board with Haas before the start of the year, having previously explored opportunities with other teams like Williams, Force India and McLaren. But the nascent partnership between Rich and Haas was placed in doubt as early as July, when Rich Energy's then-CEO William Storey announced he had "terminated" the deal with the American F1 team due to "poor performance". The deal was seemingly preserved by shareholders and Rich Energy's branding has remained on the VF-19 in the subsequent races, including last weekend's Italian Grand Prix. But with team boss Gunther Steiner confirming in late August that Rich would take a final decision on the contract before the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, a … [Read more...] about Haas splits with F1 title sponsor Rich Energy
