Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 CHICAGO (AP) — The Houston Astros got back in the win column after blowing late leads in consecutive losses — not exactly shocking considering they own the best record in the American League. Framber Valdez threw solid seven innings, Yordan Alvarez drove in a run and scored one, and Houston beat the White Sox 3-2 on Wednesday night, ending Chicago's five-game winning streak. The AL West-leading Astros hung on after squandering eighth-inning leads in the first two games of the series. The White Sox trail AL Central-leading Cleveland by two games. “We got the victory,” manager Dusty Baker said. “We stopped the losing streak.” The Astros can salvage a split in a series that started with two gut-wrenching losses. This one was hardly easy, but they did just enough. Valdez (12-4) delivered his 20th consecutive … [Read more...] about Valdez, Alvarez lead Astros to 3-2 win over White Sox

Houston Astros trade deadline pickups, by the numbers

August 3, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Farewell Jake Odorizzi. So long Jose Siri. Au revoir minor-leaguers Chayce McDermott, Enmanuel Valdez, and Wilyer Abreu. Some of you will be missed. As for Trey Mancini, Christian Vazquez, Will Smith and minor-leaguer Jayden Murray.... welcome to Houston. All the new Astros look very handsome in their uniforms, but did the team actually bolster its Major League roster as the team barrels towards another October run? Depends on what the team is setting itself up for. Make no mistake: These moves weren't about the Astros separating themselves from the Seattle Mariners, who gave up an awful lot to get pitcher Luis Castillo from the Cinncinati Reds, on top of a few other moves. On July 31, FanGraphs had Houston’s chances of winning the AL West at 99.9 percent, meaning that the stats and analysis site simulated the remainder of the season 20,000 times and the Astros won the division during more than 19,980 of those simulations. Three days later it’s now.... 99.9 percent. The division is … [Read more...] about Houston Astros trade deadline pickups, by the numbers

Listen to this article 107 wins, 109 pole positions, eight Indy car championships… The Newman/Haas Racing legacy is irrefutable. Until Chip Ganassi Racing scored its first title in ’96 and stole a march on its rivals by packaging Reynard, Firestone and Honda together, Newman/Haas was the only Indy car team that could consistently stand toe-to-toe with Team Penske, trade punches and floor its rival. NHR's strength in depth among its drivers, crew chiefs and engineering staff was a tribute to the man who started it all, Carl Haas. The man expected, created, bred and maintained excellence. In business he was renowned as a smart man and a straight shooter who’d be taken for a ride by nobody. Yet his team was far from being an austere, regimented winning machine: there was a low staff turnover primarily because those who joined never wanted to leave. Humble beginnings Originally a racecar driver of some repute in the Sports Car Club of America, Chicago-born Haas became … [Read more...] about Carl Haas, 1930-2016
