Hyundai Officially Confirms Folded Anode Tab Caused Kona EV Fires

· March 5, 2021 ·

It also confirmed the Ioniq 5 will have SK Innovation batteries. We were waiting for Hyundai to talk about the LG Energy Solution (LGES) statement on Kona Electric fires for a while, but now InsideEVs has an official explanation for them. According to Hyundai, it was indeed a folded anode tab in the batteries that caused the fires. Remember that these folded anode tabs could also be on the Chevrolet Bolt EV , which uses LG Energy Solution cells and also experienced fires recently . Hyundai told InsideEVs that the investigation led by MOLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport) in South Korea pointed that the folded anode tab “could allow the lithium plating on the anode tab to contact the cathode, resulting in an electrical short.” It’s this electrical short that would cause the fires. All the defective cells came from LGES’s plant in Nanjing. LG Energy Solution denied that this was the fire's cause and said the tests could not replicate … [Read more...] about Hyundai Officially Confirms Folded Anode Tab Caused Kona EV Fires

Moto2 Qatar test: Sam Lowes pips Bezzecchi by 0.013s

· March 21, 2021 ·

Like with the final Moto3 pre-season test, Moto2’s final three-days of running ahead of the season had to be moved to Qatar this weekend due to the COVID-19 pandemic having originally been scheduled to take place at Jerez in Spain. After the first day of running on Friday, Ajo KTM’s new signing Remy Gardner – who has switched from SAG Racing following his breakout race win at the end of last season – sat atop the timesheets with a 1m59.074s. Gardner was shuffled back to fourth on the combined timesheets coming into the final day, as Petronas Sprinta’s Xavi Vierge moved to the top of the order with a 1m58.832s. He headed Aspar’s Aron Canet, who was runner-up on the first day also, while fellow Boscoscuro chassis rider (renamed from Speed Up for 2021) Jorge Navarro on the Speed Up-run machine was third. Vierge’s teammate Jake Dixon completed the top five after day two, the Briton’s pace impressive having spent the winter recovering from the career-threatening wrist injury … [Read more...] about Moto2 Qatar test: Sam Lowes pips Bezzecchi by 0.013s

Fernandez grabs Moto2 ride vacated by champion Marquez

· November 24, 2019 ·

The Belgian-owned outfit, which has won three of the last six Moto2 riders' titles with Marquez, Franco Morbidelli and Tito Rabat, was left scrambling to find a rider for 2020 after Repsol Honda chose the under-contract Marquez to replace the retiring Jorge Lorenzo. Johann Zarco had then appeared a logical choice to take the Marc VDS ride, and had expressed interest, but now looks poised to join Avintia Ducati's MotoGP roster. Instead, Fernandez will move across from Pons Racing to partner the previously-confirmed ex-Aprilia MotoGP rider Sam Lowes in Marc VDS' line-up. "It is a dream come true to continue growing in a great team like this," Fernandez said. "My objective is to give the maximum and to work very hard to fight for victories and have the opportunity to fight for the world championship." The 22-year-old Spaniard has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the intermediate class this year, and looked as Marquez's main threat for the title after amassing three … [Read more...] about Fernandez grabs Moto2 ride vacated by champion Marquez

Sepang Moto2: Marquez crowned champion as Binder wins

· November 3, 2019 ·

The Marc VDS rider held his nerve in a tense battle with Binder and Luthi to keep his points gap above the required 24 to add to his 2014 Moto3 world title. Ajo KTM’s Binder grabbed the holeshot and led Marquez and SAG’s Tetsuta Nagashima, while Luthi failed to advance on fifth on the opening lap. Binder, who needed to win and hope Marquez finished third or lower to keep his outsider title hopes alive, tried to bolt straight away and was seven tenths clear of Marquez by the end of the opening tour. Behind, Luthi made a crucial move on the sister Marc VDS of Xavi Vierge to move up to fourth and begin the hunt of the top three, while a mistake from Binder on lap four at Turn 8 gave Marquez the lead. Binder dropped behind Nagashima, but quickly deposed him and clattered his way through on Marquez at the first corner on lap eight. This battle allowed Luthi to close in on the leading trio, and would move into third at Turn 14 after Nagashima nearly highsided … [Read more...] about Sepang Moto2: Marquez crowned champion as Binder wins
