Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 In 2019, many auto experts said Tesla was making a big mistake by deciding to sell cars only online, arguing that whatever bad feelings people had about dealerships, they were essential to the car business. But the strategy, which was adopted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and combines direct sales with a limited number of stores and service centers, appears to be proving the naysayers wrong. The company dominates the fast-growing electric car market even as other manufacturers struggle to sell cars because of a shortage of computer chips. Tesla’s approach, which has been copied by other young electric carmakers like Rivian and Lucid Motors, could eventually have major ramifications for the auto industry. Most carmakers and auto dealers are earning rich profits right now because the shortage of new cars has pushed up prices for both new and used cars. Still, car companies and … [Read more...] about Why you might buy your next car online

Rep. Scott Perry played key role in promoting false claims of fraud
WASHINGTON - Of all the fantastical false claims of fraud and vote manipulation in the 2020 presidential election, "Italygate" was one of the most extreme. And Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., was at the heart of bringing it to Donald Trump's attention. This particular allegation of fraud centered around what one former Justice Department official described Thursday as an "absurd" claim: that an Italian defense contractor had conspired with senior CIA officials to use military satellites to flip votes from Trump to Joe Biden. As The Washington Post has reported, the theory was pushed by a Virginia horse-country socialite who once gave an extended television interview from a 22-bedroom mansion that she repeatedly described as her own, even though it was not. But as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol demonstrated Thursday, Italygate also made its way to the highest levels of the U.S. government. The committee showed Dec. 31, 2020, text messages between … [Read more...] about Rep. Scott Perry played key role in promoting false claims of fraud
GOP race for Colorado elections head features indicted clerk
DENVER (AP) — Republicans in Colorado will decide Tuesday whether to nominate -- as their candidate for the state’s top election official -- a county elections clerk who is under indictment for a security breach spurred by conspiracy theories related to the 2020 presidential election. Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters announced plans earlier this year to run for the Republican nomination for secretary of state on the podcast of former President Donald Trump’s adviser, Steve Bannon. In recent months, she has been issuing various reports -- discredited by officials and experts -- that claim vulnerabilities in voting equipment used widely in Colorado and across the country. Also running in the Republican primary is Pam Anderson, a former county clerk who previously led the state clerks’ association, and businessman Mike O’Donnell. The current secretary of state, Jena Griswold, is running unopposed in the Democratic primary. Anderson's campaign highlighted her experience running … [Read more...] about GOP race for Colorado elections head features indicted clerk

Teens Popovici and McIntosh grab world swimming golds as Dressel quits
David Popovici shows off his second 'pretty heavy' gold medal BUDAPEST: After Caeleb Dressel, one of the veterans expected to dominate the World Swimming Championships, quit the competition on Wednesday, two teenagers, 17-year-old David Popovici and Summer McIntosh, 15, leapt to the top step of the podium. Dressel, a seven-time Olympic gold medallist, had "withdrawn for medical reasons. For his long-term health," Lindsay Mintenko, the Swimming Managing Director for the USA team, told media at the start of the evening session. "He's just not fit to compete right now." Popovici then claimed victory in one of Dressel's events, the men's 100m freestyle, and McIntosh won the women's 200m butterfly. In the other individual finals, 20-year-old Frenchman Leon Marchand completed the men's medley double in the 200m and Kylie Masse won a second Canadian gold when she took the 50m women's backstroke. The evening ended with another of the US team's veteran stars, Katie Ledecky, carving … [Read more...] about Teens Popovici and McIntosh grab world swimming golds as Dressel quits
How Baz Luhrmann depicts Elvis’s contested ties to Black artistry
In the new Baz Luhrmann film dramatizing the life and career of Elvis Presley, a young Elvis peers into a juke joint in his hometown of Tupelo, Miss., and his jaw drops. Inside, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup sings as a man and woman dance together, their bodies in sync. Elvis is spellbound, stunned into silence, then runs to a Pentecostal revival tent where he makes his way to the center of the worship service. A friend chases him and tries to pull him back, but the preacher allows Elvis to stay. This young man is "with the spirit." The scene pulls from a story once shared with Luhrmann by that friend: Sam Bell, who died last year at age 85. But the depiction is distinctly Luhrmann in all its striking indulgence. The Australian filmmaker frames Elvis's spiritual awakening as a musical one, too, later employing a split-screen juxtaposing Crudup's version of "That's All Right" with Elvis (Austin Butler) performing the song as his debut single. "I can't overstate enough: You can't tell the … [Read more...] about How Baz Luhrmann depicts Elvis’s contested ties to Black artistry
Abortion ruling exposes deep chasm over the issue in the US
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 America was convulsed with anger, joy, fear and confusion Friday after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The canyon-like divide across the U.S. over the right to terminate a pregnancy was on full display, with abortion rights supporters calling it a dark day in history, while abortion foes welcomed the ruling as the answer to their prayers. In eliminating the constitutional right to abortion that has stood for a half-century, the high court left the politically charged issue up to the states, about half of which are now likely to ban the procedure. Some states, such as Oklahoma and Louisiana, had bans already on the books that automatically went into effect when Roe fell. Hundreds of people surrounded the barricaded Supreme Court in Washington, some questioning the high court's legitimacy, while others cheered the ruling and proclaimed the dawn of a … [Read more...] about Abortion ruling exposes deep chasm over the issue in the US
Executives point to challenges women face from Covid
Mr Link Leading male executives from PwC, 3M and B.Grimm Power discussed the impact of Covid-19 on the workforce and shared insights on maintaining diversity and strong teams yesterday at a 2022 Global Summit of Women (GSW) forum held in Bangkok entitled "Managing during uncertainties". The GSW provided statistics that women were disproportionately affected by the pandemic, resulting in the loss of 45 million jobs held by women and the collapse of 20% of female-owned enterprises worldwide. NEW WORKFORCE Sridharan Nair, vice-chairman of Asia-Pacific markets at PwC, said the firm conducted a recent survey of its employees in 80 countries about work habits and preferences. "Some form of hybrid work is what employees expect going forward. We must deliver that to employees. Also of note is 45% of respondents said they did not have a chance to participate remotely," said Mr Nair. "For many women, working at home is not a better option. It could be for men, but for some women, … [Read more...] about Executives point to challenges women face from Covid
The best of Chevrolet’s 101 IndyCar wins in the current era
Listen to this article Aurally, the change was welcome. The normally-aspirated V8s of the Indy Racing League/IndyCar 1997-2011 era, at high revs, tended to sound as if 20-plus Canada geese were locked in one’s tympanic cavities and never needed to draw breath, and this could have a near nausea-inducing effect when the sound was bouncing off the concrete walls and buildings around a street course. The arrival of the 2.2-liter V6 turbos smoothed off that edge, and while still loud – particularly when going along the echo chamber of the back straight at Long Beach – it’s no longer unbearable. But the most welcome aspect of the switch in engine formulas was that it lured back Chevrolet, which had withdrawn from the series at the end of 1993, so IndyCar had an engine war, a second OEM to compete against Honda. Actually, it also briefly gained a third, but the less said about Judd’s effort on behalf of Lotus, the better. Helio Castroneves scored Chevrolet's first win on the … [Read more...] about The best of Chevrolet’s 101 IndyCar wins in the current era
