Would McLaren be right to drop Ricciardo for 2023? · RaceFans
When McLaren first announced in 2020 that Daniel Ricciardo would be joining them to fill the seat that would be vacated by Carlos Sainz Jnr for 2021, it seemed like the perfect match. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free McLaren were gaining an established grand prix winner with nine-and-a-half seasons of experience who had brought Renault back onto the podium multiple times during 2020. Alongside the highly promising talent Lando Norris, it would be hard to blame McLaren CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andreas Seidl for feeling very encouraged for the team’s future. But whatever McLaren, Ricciardo or the team’s legions of fans expected from having the Australian join the team, it would not have been a pattern of consistently underwhelming results and a total points difference of 102 between Norris and Ricciardo scored over 35 races together so far. With Formula 1 resting over the summer, rumours and reports indicate that McLaren are now actively looking to … [Read more...] about Would McLaren be right to drop Ricciardo for 2023? · RaceFans
Alonso: Raikkonen ‘driving better than anyone’ · RaceFans
Fernando Alonso says Kimi Raikkonen has had a strong start to the season with Lotus. Alonso, who trails Raikkonen by six points after three races, said: “Kimi is having a fantastic start to the season and driving maybe better than anyone.” Sebastian Vettel leads the drivers’ championship at the moment but Alonso believes “championship positions are not really important” at this stage. “But at the same time, it?s not a big surprise to see Lewis where he is,” said Alonso. “He is one of the best drivers on the grid right now and last year he put McLaren in a competitive position and this year he is doing it with Mercedes.” “We know the Red Bull is probably the strongest car,” he added. Alonso believes Red Bull did not fully exploit their potential last week: “In China, on race pace, Sebastian was quickest in all the stints, but had chosen a strange strategy for qualifying.” Ferrari’s Shanghai victory does not automatically make them the team to beat according to … [Read more...] about Alonso: Raikkonen ‘driving better than anyone’ · RaceFans
Top teams unlikely to run third drivers – Button · RaceFans
Jenson Button says F1’s leading teams are unlikely to run junior drivers in practice sessions in order to receive extra tyres. A plan is being considered under which teams will receive an extra set of tyres for the first practice session for a new driver to use. Button said he was supportive of the plan although he didn’t expect McLaren would take advantage of it. “I don’t think you’ll see many of the big teams having a third driver drive the car on Friday,” he said. “I think it’s a good idea to have extra sets for young drivers, yes. It’s very difficult for a young driver to have mileage in a Formula One car. They need to bring a lot of money, it seems, to have the opportunity. “But now that they have extra tyres it could actually be useful for middle-of-the-grid teams and lower to have a third driver for more mileage, more information. There are quite a few test drivers that will sit around and watch Friday, Saturday, Sunday every other weekend and they don’t get to drive … [Read more...] about Top teams unlikely to run third drivers – Button · RaceFans
Alonso’s DRS failure the first of its kind – Ferrari · RaceFans
Fernando Alonso’s DRS failure during the Bahrain Grand Prix was caused by a mechanical breakage, according to Ferrari . Alonso’s DRS jammed open after he overtook Nico Rosberg on lap five. He pitted to have the wing closed on lap seven, but it failed again the next time he used it, forcing him to return to the pits again and not use DRS throughout the rest of the race. The team said it was the first such failure for the device in three years of operation. Ferrari believe Alonso would have been able to challenge Sebastian Vettel for victory had it not been for the failure. Team principal Stefano Domenicali said: “It?s hard to recall a race where so many things went wrong.” “The DRS failure prevented Fernando, who yet again produced a great performance, from fighting Vettel for the win.” Domenicali added the team must place “renewed attention” on reliability, which has been a strength of their cars in recent seasons. “We must also continue to develop the car and … [Read more...] about Alonso’s DRS failure the first of its kind – Ferrari · RaceFans
A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 TAMPA, Fla. - State Attorney Andrew Warren was waiting for a grand jury to issue indictments in two rape and murder cases he had been working on for three years when he glanced down at his phone and saw an email from an attorney for Gov. Ron DeSantis. It said he was suspended from his job. Stunned, Warren quickly went to his office to consult with his staff. Not long after, there was a knock at the door. An armed major from the county sheriff's office and a man in a suit from the governor's office carrying a copy of DeSantis' executive order suspending him were looking for him. "He said, essentially, 'The governor has suspended you and you need to leave the office now,'" Warren, a Democrat, recalled of DeSantis' aide. "So within maybe seven minutes from getting the email, I was outside, on the street. The major offered me a ride home because they … [Read more...] about A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
Mysterious Ferrari Formula 1 Car Spotted Again On Czech Highway
Listen to this article Formula 1 is back in the Czech Republic, and no we're not talking about a Grand Prix schedule in the nation located in Central Europe – something that has never happened before. We're talking about the infamous Formula 1 car that's being driven on public roads. A few years ago, a red Ferrari F1 car was seen coasting on the D4 highway between Příbram and Dobříš. The Czech police asked for help then to track down the driver, which they did. The 45-year-old suspect escaped the penalties since he wasn't clearly identified, thanks to the helmet he was wearing. The penalties would have involved getting banned from using the thoroughfare for up to one year, plus tens of thousands of dollars in total fines. Those penalties appear to have no effect on the offender as he's back on the road again. This time, he was captured on an up-close video by one of the readers of iDNES, embedded atop this page. Future Of Formula 1: Mercedes To Stay In F1 … [Read more...] about Mysterious Ferrari Formula 1 Car Spotted Again On Czech Highway
Marcus Ericsson: There’s a lack of trust between Ferrari and the drivers
IndyCar racer Marcus Ericsson, Charles Leclerc’s former team-mate, believes there’s a fundamental lack of trust between the two sides. Ericsson, who won the Indy 500 earlier this year, was team-mates with Charles Leclerc during the Monegasque’s debut season in Formula 1 in 2018 as the pair raced for Sauber. With Leclerc’s championship hopes in 2022 all but fully extinguished as his early season lead has turned into an 80-point deficit with nine races remaining, Ericsson put himself in the shoes of his former colleague and said he reckons Leclerc’s frustrations are adding to the mistakes being made by Ferrari. “I think he’s very frustrated. I think that he’s been fast this year, but it’s just been a lot of issues,” he said on Sky F1’s Any Driven Monday . Ericsson pointed to the example of Leclerc spinning off into retirement all by himself, while leading the French Grand Prix in July, as an example of those frustrations. “What happened in Paul Ricard, one of the … [Read more...] about Marcus Ericsson: There’s a lack of trust between Ferrari and the drivers
Vandoorne given the boot at McLaren
McLaren have confirmed that they will not be renewing Stoffel Vandoorne’s contract at the end of the season. Although the issues with Vandoorne’s car have been well-documented, the pressure has been building on the Belgian throughout the season in which he has failed to outqualify team-mate Fernando Alonso and score zero points since round four in Baku. Vandoorne was initially on the shortlist for the McLaren seat alongside the incoming Carlos Sainz but, following another anonymous race at Monza, the battle is now between Force India duo Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon, plus McLaren reserve Lando Norris. “We’re immensely thankful for Stoffel’s dedication, hard work and commitment during his time at McLaren,” McLaren CEO Zak Brown said in a statement. “He’s a talented racing driver with an incredible list of accolades in his junior career. We’re proud to have played a part in his break into Formula 1, from his role as Test Driver to his fantastic points-scoring debut in … [Read more...] about Vandoorne given the boot at McLaren
