A dinner at Gordon Ramsay’s house, a cruise with Jerry Seinfeld, a private meeting with the Queen–there are certain opportunities you don’t refuse. Us automotive obsessives have these moments too, usually in the form of some personal time spent with a rare car or meeting a motorsports superhero. So, when I was asked if I wanted some short seat time in Ringbrothers’ new AMC Javelin, it was a matter of when and where, not if. Since the Wisconsin-based fabrication shop put the finishing touches on its first creation more than 20 years ago, Ringbrothers has become a big name in big-money muscle car builds. Look, I get it–restomodded Detroit iron is a prosaic as it comes. It’s hard to stand out amongst the fleets of 1,000 hp coupes wearing acres of chrome and gallons of candy paint. The sleek, buttoned-down builds coming out of the Ringbrothers shop are consistently disruptive, usually shaping the donor muscle car into something entirely different, a … [Read more...] about Exploring Superlatives with Ringbrothers’ 1972 AMC Javelin AMX Defiant!

In 1970 or so, then-20-year-old Mike Ring was in the U.S. Navy out in the vast Pacific Ocean, defending freedom and occasionally going for a swim (his job in the Navy was “Rescue Swimmer;” if you got blown off the carrier deck by jet blast and landed in the water, it was Mike who would drop from the helicopter and save you). When he went away, he left behind a beautiful 1968 GTO convertible, parked at home. It’d be safe there, wouldn’t it? So safe, he thought, that he left the keys, too. So what did Jim Ring, Mike Ring’s two-years-younger brother do?“He sold my car!” Mike alleged to me while driving his current car down Van Nuys Blvd. in Southern California.Yes, while the older Ring was away gallantly serving America and making the world safe for democracy, the younger Ring was working the used car market. I confronted Ring the younger with this evidence later during lunch at the Bob’s Big Boy in Toluca Lake. Did he really sell his … [Read more...] about We drive Ringbrothers’ 1036-hp 1972 AMC Javelin AMX
Prestone’s 90th anniversary was in 2017. To celebrate, the company wanted a vehicle that represented its history that could travel to events across the U.S. Prestone could have chosen any number of car builders from across the country to construct a vehicle worthy of the honor, but it turned out they didn’t have to look far. The Ringbrothers are known for their builds that reimagine classic American muscle cars with modern drivetrains and suspensions and tremendous attention to detail. The shop is only about 150 miles from Prestone’s corporate HQ north of Chicago, and Randy Fisher, Prestone’s vice president of marketing, has worked with Ringbrothers for years. The build was on.As soon as they were approached with the project in 2016, Mike and Jim Ring knew the perfect canvas to create an all-American muscle car. There was a 1972 Javelin AMX that became a bit of a local legend in the Ring’s hometown. Mike Ring told us that it was a regular at the gas … [Read more...] about Defiant! Unlike say, the Dodge Charger, Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro, the AMC Javelin has never been classed as one of the muscle car greats. With its droopy nose and overly-defined fender lines, it’s not hard to see why it never made it to true pony car poster status. But, nearly half a century later, that hasn’t stopped muscle car builder Ringbrothers from giving it a second shot with this: a 1972 AMC Javelin AMX called “Defiant”. Jim and Mike Ring, co-founders of Ringbrothers, head up the Wisconsin-based firm famed for putting silly power and carbon fibre bodies on America’s finest muscle cars of old. And other oddities like 900bhp Winnebagos. When they sourced this Javelin (once a regular at the petrol station their father ran in Plain, Wisconsin, but hadn’t hit the road since 1977) they were greeted with a time capsule of Seventies nostalgia. They could have simply reconditioned it. They didn’t. The Defiant … [Read more...] about Check out this 1,036bhp carbon-bodied Javelin AMX
When everything is special, nothing is special. Custom, big-dollar builds based on Camaros, Mustangs, Chargers, Corvettes, and Challengers clog showhalls around the country, giving rise to an unfortunate normalization of the restomod muscle car.Thankfully, there are still a handful of shops whose thinking is decidedly “out of the box,” creating incredible builds that are almost more art than car. At this year’s SEMA Show, Ringbrothers once again proved itself the king of this space, unveiling a wild, 1,080-hp 1972 AMC Javelin AMX.Looking over the Ringbrothers’ Defiant! AMX (yes, the exclamation point is part of the name), it’s hard to believe the Wisconsin-based workshop began the project just one year ago. Even before head sponsor Prestone knocked on its door, Ringbrothers already knew an AMX would serve as the next canvas. As is the case with most of Ringbrothers’ builds, the Defiant! is radically different from the car it began life as. … [Read more...] about Ringbrothers Debuts Hellcat-Powered 1972 AMC Javelin AMX at SEMA
One of the project’s we’ve been anticipating for the past several months, Prestone’s 1972 AMC Javelin AMX is being built by Ringbrothers and has made some excellent headway since we were introduced to the project. If you’d like some history on the car, visit that introduction HERE. Since that introduciton, the Ringbrothers crew have used 3D scanning and 3D printing to make the plugs and molds they use for carbon fiber panels that will make up the bodywork from the A-pillar forward. Some of that handiwork can be seen in the fender, while the hood has been kept under wraps so far. We spoke with Prestone’s Vice President of Marketing Randy Fisher about the how the project came to be. Fisher has worked with Ringbrothers since 2011, before he came to Prestone, but this build didn’t start its planning phase until SEMA 2016. When Fisher and the Prestone team decided that they wanted to celebrate Prestone’s 90th Anniversary with a special car that … [Read more...] about Project Update: Prestone’s 1972 Javelin AMX by Ringbrothers
Fate has a curious way of determining our destiny. Take Bruce Gordon, for example. Back in the late ’70s/early ’80s, Bruce was in the market for his first car, and being an enthusiast, responded to an ad for a 455-powered LeMans. As it turned out, the seller also had a ’72 Javelin available, and Bruce fell for it over the Pontiac. Don’t try to fill in the blanks just yet-that Javelin is not the one seen on these pages. However, the first ’72 did spark a decades-long interest in Kenosha’s finest factory hot rods that’s still going strong with Bruce today. In between the two ’72 Javelins were three ’70 AMXs. Bruce also owned a brand-new ’86 Mustang GT for a while, and found its combination of V-8 power, electronic fuel injection, and manual overdrive trans to be a nearly perfect mix of elements for a daily driven street machine. But Bruce let the Mustang go after nearly a decade of ownership, and family priorities forced the … [Read more...] about 1972 AMC Javelin AMX – Practical In Purple

Ringbrothers. Their creations feature incredible craftsmanship and tasteful design, and the cars the shop brought to SEMA this year are no different. The first was a Dodge Charger that we've already shown you, but the other is something far more unusual, a 1972 AMC Javelin AMX. It was commissioned by Prestone, and the gold-colored product is remarkable. The body is the first thing you'll notice, and it still has all the obvious Javelin design cues such as the long nose, fastback roof, and exaggerated fenders. Javelin experts might notice that something's a little different about the car's shape, though. As explained at the car's reveal, the front wheels and arches have been moved forward. The purpose of this was to help eliminate the stock Javelin's long overhang. In order to accomplish this, the original fenders were completely removed in favor of custom carbon fiber pieces. Other sharp exterior details include the side skirts that incorporate the side-exit exhaust, and black sections … [Read more...] about Ringbrothers’ 1972 AMC Javelin AMX makes 1,100 horsepower
As 90th birthday presents go, it doesn’t get much better than this 1972 AMC Javelin AMX, customized by Ringbrothers. That’s what Prestone got for its 90th anniversary at the 2017 SEMA show, having planted the seeds for the project at last year’s show. The build is incredible—especially considering that it’s one of the rare muscle-car projects that is based on a Javelin.Beneath its yell0w-and-black paint job, a nod to Prestone’s color scheme, the Javelin’s highest-profile upgrade is in the engine bay, where there lives a supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8—an upgraded blower means this ’Cat is now good for 1100 horsepower or so—that spins a Chevy automatic transmission and a carbon-fiber driveshaft leading to a Chevy rear end. The Ringbrothers brought the braking closer to modern standards with a four-corner Baer disc-brake setup clamped by six-piston calipers. A Detroit Speed subframe for a Camaro supports the front suspension … [Read more...] about AMC + Hellcat + Chevy Adds Up To an Awesome, 1100-HP ’72 Javelin
