During the opening two F1 races of the season, Aston Martin voiced unease that the change to floor rules for 2021, aimed at cutting downforce, had excessively punished the low rake concept cars the most. Team principal Otmar Szafnauer suggested that the performance swing between the high-rake and low-rake cars could be as much as one second per lap. Szafnauer wanted the FIA to respond with some rule tweaks to level the playing field this season, and did not completely dismiss the idea of legal action if a positive response was not forthcoming. However, Aston Martin's complaints have found little support among rival competitors, who are clear that they believe that the right procedures were followed by the FIA and F1 in coming up with the floor solution. Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto said: "There is a governance in place and if you need to change aero rules, you need to go through that governance. "As Ferrari, we believe what was said on the safety reasons was … [Read more...] about Rivals believe Aston has no grounds to dispute aero rules

Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe technical boss Pascal Vasselon revealed that the team was able to make up for the snowed-off test at Aragon in January during a second test at the Spanish circuit last week. The three-day test on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday included the first night-time running of the GR010 Hybrid. "It was a much more positive test than our previous trip to Aragon last month, and we could successfully recover quite a lot of test mileage by running through the night on Wednesday," Vasselon said. "This brought us back on track to achieve our target mileage before the season starts, which is good news. "The process of understanding all detailed aspects of the new car and fine-tuning set-ups is still at an early stage, so it is an intense period for everyone in the team, as is normal with a completely new car.” Read Also: Kobayashi, Nakajima finally test Toyota hypercar The ground-up refresh behind Toyota's new Le Mans challenger All six … [Read more...] about Toyota now “back on track” with hypercar test plan
The pair traded fastest times throughout the opening practice session, while Lewis Hamilton finished fifth after complaining of a balance problem early on and then failing to string a flying lap together on the softer tyres in the closing stages. When the session got underway, Bottas was first to take the track, followed by Sergio Perez, who was initially running a large aero rake at the rear of his Red Bull. Bottas therefore set the early benchmark at 1m23.778s on the hard tyres, which most of the field used for the first half of the 60-minute session. The smooth, low-grip surface meant the drivers were finding time the longer their runs went on, with Bottas soon lowering the fastest time to a 1m22.938s. Hamilton then jumped ahead with a 1m22.772s, also on the hard rubber, but was soon back in the pits complaining that the balance on his W12 was "undriveable" and that Mercedes had to make some "serious changes". Arguably, no other combination has so clearly failed to turn dazzling qualifying speed into hard results. It's a strange situation given that historically the Faenza outfit has been known for overachieving, stealing unexpected results on days when things go wrong for others. Gasly qualified a superb fifth at both of the opening events in Bahrain and Imola, and yet the races have not gone to plan. In the first race the Frenchman crunched his front wing against the rear wheel of Daniel Ricciardo's McLaren on the opening lap, and his day was effectively over. Then at its home event AlphaTauri made an over-cautious call to start both cars on full wet tyres. That didn't pay off, and in the end seventh – helped by a one-place gain from a penalty ahead – represented a decent recovery for Gasly. To compound the Italian team's frustration his teammate Yuki Tsunoda has yet to fully optimise a race weekend and fulfil his obvious potential. Gasly is well aware that opportunities … [Read more...] about Can Gasly finally fulfil AlphaTauri qualifying promise?
It's a few years old, but 662 hp is still plenty of power. In 2014, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was one of the meanest American muscle cars available. But, things change, and the current GT500 boasts quite a bit more power. For its latest video, the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds gets ahold of the older model to see how the coupe performs. As a refresher, the 2014 Ford Shelby GT500 has a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 making 662 horsepower (494 kilowatts) and 631 pound-feet (855 Newton-meters) of torque. A six-speed manual sends the power to the rear wheels. This run uses 2.7 miles (4.35 kilometers) of the 3.22-mile (5.15-kilometer course. It sits just 8.3 feet (2.53 meters) above sea level, and there is just 0.25 inches (0.635 centimeters) of elevation change over the distance.
