Last offseason, the Tigers made two of their three free-agent signings before the MLB Winter Meetings. This offseason, they had three done by the end of the meetings (counting the deal with Matt Moore last month). The Tigers' acquisitions are largely second-division options who were willing to sign early before the free-agent market was fully set. After last winter’s sub-par market, it appears the players were less willing to wait it out, which played into the Tigers’ hands. Judged on talent alone, the pickups are hardly inspiring. But the Tigers are rebuilding, which limits the talent available to them. Anthony Fenech Detroit Free Press Published 7:18 PM EST Dec 13, 2018 LAS VEGAS — After last season’s struggle to find Victor Reyes playing time in the outfield, the Detroit Tigers went a different direction in Thursday’s Rule 5 draft. With the No. 5 pick, the team selected Reed Garrett, a reliever from the Texas Rangers organization who will arrive in spring training with an inside track at making his major-league debut. Garrett, who turns 26 in January, is coming off his strongest professional season, in which he posted a 2.04 ERA and 1.20 ERA while spending time with Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock in 2018. Garrett struck out 61 batters in 61⅔ innings.
