McLaren Services, a division of the McLaren Formula 1 team, has been fined £650,000 after being found guilty of two health and safety charges resulting in the death of senior engineer David Oldham. Inspecting the Formula 1 team’s motorhome in October 2016, the mobile building that’s taken to grand prix weekends, he fell from height. Found on the floor of the warehouse, the 55-year-old was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he passed away the following day. During a trial at Reading Crown Court, the jury heard that Oldham had been working on a level with exposed edges while inspecting the motorhome’s ceiling, something he’d already done five times prior. The court learnt that while people had been advised to stay two metres from the edge, that was not in the official written document. McLaren were found guilty of two health and safety violations, the company’s McLaren Services’ division handed a £650,000 fine. Sentencing Judge Amjad Khan said as per the … [Read more...] about McLaren fined £650,000 over the death of a senior engineer in 2016

Max Verstappen not interested in where he ranks among the Formula 1 greats
Following his record-breaking 2022 campaign, Max Verstappen says he doesn’t bother with statistics, he just wants to get on with the job of winning “more races and potentially championships”. Storming to his second Drivers’ Championship title last season, Verstappen set a new record for the most wins in a single season, 15, while also writing his name in the history books for overturning the biggest deficit, 46 points, to win a World title. And that’s just two of the records he broke last season. His numbers had former World Champion Nico Rosberg declaring the Dutchman is “already” one of the greatest of all time, “if you look at the statistics.” Those include 35 race wins, putting him sixth on the overall list for the most F1 victories, 77 podiums, 20 pole positions and two World titles. This year he’s the favourite for the title, which would him bring him into line with the likes of Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna and Jackie Stewart as a triple World Champion. The stats, … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen not interested in where he ranks among the Formula 1 greats
Lewis Hamilton reveals future space trip around the Moon with Elon Musk
Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has been promised a trip to space from Space X CEO and the second-wealthiest man in the world Elon Musk. As an F1 driver, Hamilton is more than accustomed to moving at high speeds but it is nothing compared to the velocity needed for a ship to break free of Earth’s atmosphere. More than 60 years after humans first landed on the moon, space voyages are no longer just for those trained at NASA and now more and more celebrities are getting the chance to see the Earth from up high. While Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company has so far made it to 100km, accepted as the the altitude at which outer space begins, Musk is looking to one-up his old foe with trips not just into space but around the Moon. Late last year, Musk’s Space X company announced that they would be taking their first passenger, Dennis Tito, around the lunar body and it seems Hamilton is next in line. George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’
George Russell was not satisfied with his front row position, stating he believed his lap was good enough to secure him pole. It was quite the turnaround of fortune for both Mercedes drivers with Russell securing P2 while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton will start one place further back in Melbourne. This result comes after CEO and team principal Toto Wolff warned not to expect “miracles” before the Imola upgrade package but there was every suggestion the W14 had found some previously hidden pace in Albert Park. As with every other team, it was oftentimes a case of quantity not quality with the soft tyre proving particularly hard to warm up and with an ever-present, but ultimately hollow, threat of rain in the air. With Sergio Perez out in Q1, the battle for the front row slots opened up but few would have predicted it would have been Russell to take it, moving into P2 with one of the final laps of the session. It represents Russell’s best starting position since the 2022 … [Read more...] about George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’
Jenson Button criticises Sergio Perez quali approach after early retirement
Jenson Button has criticised the approach of Sergio Perez after the Mexican caused a red flag just minutes into qualifying in Melbourne. Perez’s horror Saturday continued into Q1 when the Red Bull man again lost it going into Turn 3, a problem he had frequently experienced during FP3. Any hope that his woes in the morning session would be at an end were quickly extinguished when he found himself beached in the gravel and unable to continue. It means that, unless there are any grid penalties, Perez will start Sunday’s race from last, his lowest qualifying spot since the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. 2009 World Champion Button, who twice started on pole in Melbourne, criticised the approach of Perez, suggesting he should have built up his lap more. “That’s game over for him but that surprises me,:” he said during a commentary stint on Sky Sports F1. “He had a tough FP3, but you build up to it. “He’s got the quickest car out there – don’t go and put it on the line in the second … [Read more...] about Jenson Button criticises Sergio Perez quali approach after early retirement
Daniel Ricciardo provides update on F1 future as he returns to paddock
Back in the paddock for the first time this season, Daniel Ricciardo has revealed “the signs are pointing towards” a 2024 return to the Formula 1 grid. Ricciardo walked away from Formula 1 at the end of last season, the Honey Badger saying he was burnt out after two trying years with McLaren. While he was offered the chance at a Haas race seat, he decided instead to sit out the year and plot a potential 2024 return. That, though, would depend on where his head was at and whether or not retirement had got it hooks into him. But although he seems to be living his best life away from the track, he has confirmed he wants to be back on the grid next season, but just not with any team, it needs to be a top one. “The signs are pointing towards getting back on the grid,” Ricciardo said, as per The Athletic ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. “I feel like that’s currently where I’m tracking, at least in my head. “I’ve even put myself in scenarios now where I’m like, if … [Read more...] about Daniel Ricciardo provides update on F1 future as he returns to paddock
‘Red Bull worried the handbrake is coming and Aston Martin could find another second’
Former F1 driver Anthony Davidson says Red Bull have yet to feel the effects of their budget cap penalty, and when it does hit Aston Martin could rapidly close the gap. Red Bull have been the pick of the field this season, the RB19 comfortable the quickest car with Helmut Marko putting their advantage at a “second” per lap in race trim. It saw Max Verstappen win the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix with a margin of 38s to the nearest non-Red Bull car, Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin, while race winner Sergio Perez was 15s ahead of the Spaniard in Saudi Arabia. Scoring 87 of a maximum 88 points with their back-to-back 1-2 results, Red Bull are 49 points ahead of Aston Martin but it’s an advantage they may not be able to maintain as the season progresses given their budget cap penalty. Red Bull went into 2023 already facing a deficit on the aerodynamic test restrictions scale given they’re the reigning World Champions, but that was reduced by a further 10 per cent as … [Read more...] about ‘Red Bull worried the handbrake is coming and Aston Martin could find another second’
McLaren are building a new wind tunnel, so why do they support banning them? · RaceFans
When asked why he had committed to McLaren – allegedly until end-2024 – by RaceFans during an interview in Monaco on Thursday, Lando Norris listed the team’s plans to build a new wind tunnel as one of “a combination of a few things over the past couple of years that we’ve done, but then also things that we have coming up in the future. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free “I guess having our own wind tunnel is one of the biggest things,” he continued, adding, it would be much easier for “the guys and girls who travel all the way to [Toyota’s facility in] Germany every time and go to the wind tunnel, spend time in isolation, there for three weeks, come back and spend time in isolation again and so on. We lose a lot of time compared to other teams who are able to do it a lot quicker.” Wind tunnels are extremely costly pieces of kit, not only to install but also to maintain and operate. A team is unlikely to obtain much change from $60 million (£42.4m) for a … [Read more...] about McLaren are building a new wind tunnel, so why do they support banning them? · RaceFans
A key inflation gauge tracked by the Fed slowed in February
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve's favored inflation gauge slowed sharply last month, an encouraging sign in the Fed's yearlong effort to cool price pressures through steadily higher interest rates. Friday’s report from the Commerce Department showed that consumer prices rose 0.3% from January to February, down from a 0.6% increase from December to January. Measured year-over-year, prices rose 5%, slower than the 5.3% annual increase in January. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation rose 0.3% from January and 4.6% from a year earlier. Both were slowdowns from the previous month. The Fed is believed to pay particular attention to the core measure as a gauge of underlying inflation pressures. Taken as a whole, Friday's figures show that inflation pressures, though easing gradually, still maintain a grip on the economy.
