Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan apologized in court on Thursday over his outburst against a female judge during a rally last month that was seen as a threat to the judiciary and judges in general. The apology, an option envisaged under the Pakistani legal system, may allow Khan to stay out of jail and avoid contempt charges. Khan, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote in April, has been campaigning for early elections and claims he was toppled under a U.S. conspiracy. The development came just days after Pakistani police were ordered by a judge to drop terrorism charges against Khan in a separate case over threats to the same judge and also to police. The legal cases followed a speech Khan gave in the capital, Islamabad, during which he vowed to bring a lawsuit against the Islamabad police chief and a judge for allowing police to question Shahbaz … [Read more...] about Pakistan’s ex-PM Khan apologizes to avoid contempt charges
A whistleblower accusing Twitter of failing to comply with a 2011 consent decree is raising questions not just about his former employer's actions but about the Federal Trade Commission, the agency that is supposed to ensure Twitter abides by its pledge to protect users' private data. Whistleblower Peiter "Mudge" Zatko, Twitter's former security lead, claimed in his complaint to the Securities and Exchange Commission that Twitter never developed a security system capable of meeting the FTC's requirement that the platform establish a comprehensive information security program. And despite its promise never to mislead on privacy, Zatko accused Twitter of "extensive, repeated, uninterrupted violations" of consumer protection laws and making "false and misleading statements" about the state of the company's privacy and security safeguards. His allegations, filed in July and published by The Washington Post last month, will be argued over in next month's trial to determine whether … [Read more...] about Twitter whistleblower exposes limits of FTC’s power

It says the attack is not being treated as terrorism. The Metropolitan Police force says officers “encountered a man with a knife” in the Leicester Square area, a busy tourist hub, at a round 6 a.m. (0500GMT). The force says both officers are in the hospital and it is awaiting updates on their conditions. A man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker. He is also in the hospital. Police say a Taser was used during the arrest. Police say they are investigating the circumstances around the incident. It comes as London is flooded with mourners for Queen Elizabeth II’s lying-in-state, but the stabbing did not occur near any commemorative sites. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 ISLAMABAD (AP) — The World Health Organization raised the alarm Saturday about a “second disaster" in the wake of the deadly floods in Pakistan this summer, as doctors and medical workers on the ground race to battle outbreaks of waterborne and other diseases. The floodwaters started receding this week in the worst-hit provinces but many of the displaced — now living in tents and makeshift camps — increasingly face the threat of gastrointestinal infections, dengue fever and malaria, which are on the rise. The dirty and stagnant waters have become breeding grounds for mosquitos. The unprecedented monsoon rains since mid-June, which many experts link to climate change, and subsequent flooding have killed 1,545 people across Pakistan, inundated millions of acres of land and affected 33 million people. As many as 552 children have also been killed in … [Read more...] about WHO raises alarm on disease in flood-hit areas of Pakistan

Listen to this article As the sun set on the first Le Mans Virtual Series race of the 2022-23 season, Floyd Vanwall-Burst and Oracle Red Bull Racing have won the 8 Hours of Bahrain. Following a closely-packed qualifying session the day before , the pre-eminent Team Redline sat in pole position in both classes, with Jeffrey Rietveld and Kevin Siggy setting the best times in LMP and GTE. The reigning champions locking out the front rows didn’t tell the whole story though, as the GTE field, in particular, was extraordinarily tight. 15 out of the 16 entries were covered by less than a second. With the bright Bahraini sun beating down on the virtual asphalt as the clock hit 2 pm CEST, the 40-car field raced down to Turn 1 to begin a punishing race. Initially, pole-sitter Rietveld was tentative, allowing Jernej Simončič for Floyd Vanwall-Burst to momentarily nose ahead before the Redline driver braked late to hold on. In GTE, progress was more frenetic, as Red Bull … [Read more...] about Le Mans Virtual Series Bahrain: Floyd Vanwall-Burst and Red Bull Racing victorious
