Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free But the Haas driver was able to re-join the action and went on to equal his best qualifying performance to date by taking fourth place. “I’m super pleased,” he said in response to a question from RaceFans after qualifying. “It’s another unbelievable result for us. “The car was just great, so fast and a joy to drive. So proud of the team.” Asked about the spin which nearly ended his session, Magnussen said: “I ran out of talent.” He spun backwards into a gravel trap at Acque Minerali, but managed to keep his car moving and eventually extracted himself from the run-off area. A Texas mayor resigned after he was arrested and charged last week with soliciting a minor online. Pilot Point Mayor Matthew Mcllravy, 42, was elected in May and then arrested on June 21 following a five-month police investigation. During a city council meeting, acting interim mayor Chad Major told the public how Mcllravy submitted his resignation on Thursday, June 23. Mcllravy, who is a married father of two boys, is accused of trying to meet up and engage in sex with a girl he thought was 13, according to an arrest warrant pulled from the Dallas Morning News . "To the Pilot Point City Council and City Manager, I am resigning as mayor of Pilot Point effective immediately," Mcllravy wrote in his brief resignation letter that was read during the city council meeting. John Wall accepts buyout from Rockets, will sign with Clippers
After a year of sitting on the bench, John Wall is finally going to get back to playing basketball. The five-time All-Star guard reached an agreement with the Rockets on a buyout of the final year of his contract, and reportedly will sign a deal to join the Los Angeles Clippers. Wall was set to make $47.4 million from the Rockets, but reportedly agreed to accept about $40.9 million instead. Wall will make up that money by signing a deal with the Clippers for about $6.5 million, according to multiple reports . The Rockets acquired Wall and a first-round pick from the Washington Wizards in a trade for Russell Westbrook, who had a similarly overpriced contract, in 2020. Wall had a good first season in Houston, averaging 20.6 points and 6.9 assists in 40 games. However, the team and Wall agreed that it was best for him to sit out last season as the team developed its young guards Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr., and explored trade scenarios involving Wall. Alas, Wall's … [Read more...] about John Wall accepts buyout from Rockets, will sign with Clippers
‘Lost Illusions’ is Balzac for the 21st century
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 In "Lost Illusions," an aspiring writer wends his way through a gantlet of sex workers en route to meet a second-rate publisher keeping shop in the red light district of the big city. But this isn't the story of some pulp novelist trying to get his foot in the door of 1970s Times Square. This is 19th-century Paris, as seen in this lively period piece based on Honoré de Balzac's serialized novel of 1837-1843. French director Xavier Giannoli ("Marguerite") honors the spirit of Balzac and the era but makes it clear that, if the 21st century seems like a cesspool of journalistic deceit, plus ça change, as they say in France. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The titular illusions belong to 20-year-old Lucien (Benjamin Voisin), a dashing yet naive poet who's having an affair with a married high-society woman (Cécile de France). Lucien hopes his writing talent will earn … [Read more...] about ‘Lost Illusions’ is Balzac for the 21st century
Biden, NATO to beef up force posture amid Russian aggression
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 MADRID (AP) — President Joe Biden opened his three-day visit to a NATO summit Tuesday by pledging to beef up the American military presence in Europe as he denounced Russia’s Vladimir Putin for trying to “wipe out” Ukrainian culture in the ongoing war in eastern Europe. Biden, in talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, detailed plans to increase the number of Navy destroyers based in Rota, Spain, from four to six. Biden said the move was one of multiple announcements that he and NATO allies would make to help bolster the alliance in the region during the summit. Biden arrived in Spain for the NATO summit amid an intense barrage of Russian fire across Ukraine— including a horrific missile attack on a shopping mall in Kyiv on Monday— and growing weariness over the grinding war that is battering the global economy. “Sometimes I think Putin’s … [Read more...] about Biden, NATO to beef up force posture amid Russian aggression
Sam Gilliam never fought the canvas – he liberated it
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 WASHINGTON - Throughout the 20th century, more than a few radical artists attacked the canvas. They ripped it from the frame, sliced it with a knife, burned holes into it and shot at it, sometimes with paint, sometimes with more lethal ammunition. Canvas became a metaphor for art and society, for the old ways of doing things, for the oppressive, immutable weight of complacency and cruelty woven into so much of the human-made world. Sam Gilliam didn't attack the canvas, he liberated it. That distinction was critical to his career, and the affection felt by so many for the artist, who died Saturday at age 88. Gilliam lived a long life, a productive one, and his artistic adventure was enormously varied and restlessly inventive. But it was work he began making in the mid- to late 1960s, using unstretched, draped canvas for which he is best known, and which secured both his entree and his … [Read more...] about Sam Gilliam never fought the canvas – he liberated it
