At a community meeting on Tuesday, Jan.17, Link Houston , a local public transportation and infrastructure advocacy group, released their 2022 Equity in Transit report to address how the city can improve transportation for Houstonians. After conversations with residents and research on METRO, the organization found a few critical priorities for residents specifically focused on residents living in Gulfton, located on the southwestern corner of the city just outside the 610 Loop. Gulfton is one of the most densely populated areas in the Houston metro, and is comprised of a growing number of newcomers and immigrants looking to call Houston home. “There is no one single fix that will solve the many problems that shape the way Houstonians move around,” Executive Director of LINK Houston Gabe Cazares said in a statement. “This report shows that the public is willing to come to the table and talk with elected leaders, METRO officials, and others involved to help make all forms of … [Read more...] about Here’s how Houston METRO riders want public transit to improve

John Wall blasts Rockets’ team culture, levies tanking allegation
The Houston Rockets aren't exactly the darlings of the NBA at the moment as they limp to Wednesday night's game vs. Charlotte riding an 11-game losing streak. And on Tuesday, one former Houston player levied some some serious criticism at the current state of the franchise. Current Los Angeles Clippers guard John Wall didn't hold back when discussing his time in Houston when appearing on the Run Your Race podcast . Wall, a five-time All-Star, arrived in Houston in early December of 2020, and he said Tuesday he joined the Rockets assuming the franchise was ready to make another playoff run with Wall flanking James Harden. Such plans didn't exactly come to fruition. Harden skipped Rockets' training camp as he demanded a trade, and he was off the roster less than two month's later. "I'm going there thinking James is gonna be there, but he already wants out," Wall said. "When I landed, I'm like, 'What's up? I'm about to land.' He's like, 'Well I’m on my way to Atlanta to go to Lil … [Read more...] about John Wall blasts Rockets’ team culture, levies tanking allegation
Senators on both sides accuse Ticketmaster of misusing its power
Senators from both sides of the aisle during a Tuesday hearing accused Ticketmaster parent Live Nation Entertainment of using monopoly power to dominate the ticketing and live events industry, as lawmakers grilled a top company executive who fiercely denied the assertion. "This whole concert ticket system is a mess - it's a monopolistic mess," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), calling Live Nation an "800 pound gorilla" that has "clear dominance, monopolistic control." Over nearly three hours, Senate Judiciary Committee members questioned industry experts and executives - including Joe Berchtold, president and chief financial officer of Live Nation - about whether a 2010 merger between Live Nation and Ticketmaster allowed the company to unfairly grow its market share, and whether that dominance is hurting artists and consumers. The hearing comes a few months after the issue took center stage during a mad rush for Taylor Swift tickets late last year that resulted in scores of … [Read more...] about Senators on both sides accuse Ticketmaster of misusing its power

Sign up for The Brief , The Texas Tribune’s daily newsletter that keeps readers up to speed on the most essential Texas news. Gov. Greg Abbott , in his third inaugural address Tuesday, emphasized that the legislative session would be centered on the historic budget surplus, “parental rights” in schools and public safety. Notably, he pitched a focus on infrastructure that included the power grid, after the 2021 winter storm and blackout left millions of Texans in the dark and hundreds dead. Abbott trumpeted grid improvements that he successfully pushed in the months after but acknowledged there is more work to do. In doing so, he aligned himself with Lt. Gov. … [Read more...] about Gov. ‘Till’ review: Finding hope in American tragedy
The timing of “Till,” a film about the aftermath of the horrific, white supremacist 1955 slaying of 14-year-old Emmett Till , is fascinating. Earlier this year, a federal anti-lynching bill bearing Till’s name finally became law, 67 years after his murder. The cultural currency of that name has surged after the cultural moment the Black Lives Matter movement forced on America. Yet “Till” took so long to be made that its arrival has raised a new concern: Do Black audiences care to face the agony of the boy’s martyrdom? There's a growing sentiment that these films mainly re-traumatize Black audiences and turn Black suffering into spectacle for the White Gaze. This has become such a point of contention that the director of “Till,” Nigerian-American Chinonye Chukwu, felt the need to record a special message for the trailer assuring wary viewers that this was not trauma porn and images of Till being brutalized did not appear in the film. And it’s true: “Till” isn’t trauma porn. It is … [Read more...] about ‘Till’ review: Finding hope in American tragedy
