Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Estonia's government said Tuesday it has decided to remove a Soviet-era monument from public space in an eastern border town sitting in the Baltic country's Russian-speaking part, with the prime minister saying the reason for the dismantling is that it represents a risk for public order. “No one wants to see our militant and hostile neighbor foment tensions in our home,” Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said, adding the move came following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We will not afford Russia the opportunity to use the past to disturb the peace in Estonia.” Kallas said they didn't want to give Russia the opportunity of "tearing open old wounds.” Outside Narva — Estonia's third largest town with a large Russian speaking population — a replica of a T-34 tank with a red Soviet star sits atop a monument commemorating the Soviet … [Read more...] about Estonia removes Soviet-era monument, citing public order

Next US energy boom could be wind power in the Gulf of Mexico
(THE CONVERSATION) With passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains US$370 billion for climate and energy programs, policy experts are forecasting a big expansion in clean electricity generation. One source that’s poised for growth is offshore wind power. Today the U.S. has just two operating offshore wind farms, off of Rhode Island and North Carolina, with a combined generating capacity of 42 megawatts. For comparison, the new Traverse Wind Energy Center in Oklahoma has 356 turbines and a 998-megawatt generating capacity. But many more projects are in development, mostly along the Atlantic coast. The Biden administration has identified two zones for offshore wind power development in the Gulf of Mexico, which up until now has been firmly identified with oil and gas production. As part of his climate strategy, President Joe Biden has set a goal for the deployment of 30 gigawatts (30,000 megawatts) of offshore wind generating capacity by 2030 – enough to power 10 million … [Read more...] about Next US energy boom could be wind power in the Gulf of Mexico

NBA schedule won’t have games on Election Day this year
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 The NBA will be off on Election Day. The league’s schedule for the coming season will have all 30 teams playing on Nov. 7, the night before the midterm elections. The NBA is hoping teams use that night as an opportunity to encourage fans to get out and vote, plus amplify the need for civic engagement. But on Nov. 8, which is Election Day, no NBA teams have games scheduled. Teams are being encouraged to share election information — such as registration deadlines — with their fan bases in the weeks leading up to Nov. 8. “The scheduling decision came out of the NBA family’s focus on promoting nonpartisan civic engagement and encouraging fans to make a plan to vote during midterm elections," the league said Tuesday. All 435 U.S. House seats will be up for grabs on Nov. 8, along with more than 30 U.S. Senate seats and gubernatorial races. “It’s unusual. We don’t usually change the … [Read more...] about NBA schedule won’t have games on Election Day this year
An interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
KYIV, Ukraine - Over the past six months, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has become an inspiring wartime leader and champion of his country. During an hour-long, wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post at the presidential office, where hallways are kept dark and are lined with sandbags to protect against Russian attack, Zelensky discussed U.S. warnings about Russia preparing to launch a full-scale invasion - and if he believed them. The following is a translated and lightly edited transcript of excerpts from the interview. The full transcript will be published at a later date. - - - Q: When CIA Director William J. Burns met with you here in Kyiv in January, one of the things he told you was that the Russians would attempt a landing at the airport in Hostomel. What was your reaction when that actually happened on Feb. 24? Should there have been more Ukrainian forces already there? Academy outsiders – the best young drivers who lack F1 team backing · RaceFans
There’s always talk of which Formula 1 junior driver will be next in line for a promotion at their respective team, whether that be to a test, reverse or race driver role. And there is also plenty of attention drawn whenever juniors are dropped or part ways from their backers too. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Junior drivers don’t have to be realistic contenders for future F1 seats, they’re another tool in the marketing arsenal more than anything else (see Ferrari’s F1 struggles while their juniors swept everything before them). It’s only once you get to the highest level of junior single-seater racing when the expectation emerges to reward strong performances on track with F1 opportunities. Alpine have struggled in that regard with reigning Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri. His private F1 test programme initially happened only because a fellow junior driver’s finances enabled it, then his free practice debut was held back for so long that he’s now on his … [Read more...] about Academy outsiders – the best young drivers who lack F1 team backing · RaceFans
Infrastructure money to almost double zero-emission buses on road
WASHINGTON - The infrastructure law is set to almost double the number of zero-emission buses on U.S. roads with a single year's funding, the Federal Transit Administration announced Tuesday. The agency said it has awarded $1.6 billion through a pair of programs to transit operators across the country. The money will be used to purchase about 1,800 buses - including 1,100 that aren't dependent on fossil fuels - and to construct maintenance and charging facilities while training workers. The funding is one of the most direct ways the $1 trillion infrastructure package promises to cut carbon emissions from transportation, the nation's biggest source of greenhouse gases. Federal officials will have another four rounds of funds to distribute in the coming years after Tuesday's initial awards. The money is expected to help transit agencies accelerate plans to transition from diesel buses to battery- or hydrogen-powered buses. Nuria Fernandez, the head of the FTA, said the money is … [Read more...] about Infrastructure money to almost double zero-emission buses on road
How quitting vaping nicotine can improve mental health
(BPT) - By Truth Initiative Mental health and nicotine use are connected in ways many may not realize with a large body of evidence revealing troubling links, including the fact that nicotine can amplify feelings of depression and anxiety. This connection is increasingly important as two health crises among youth — a mental health crisis and a vaping epidemic — pose increasing threats to a generation of young people. The tobacco industry has long sold the myth of nicotine as a stress reliever, but according to a body of peer-reviewed research gathered in the Truth Initiative report “Colliding Crises: Youth Mental Health and Nicotine Use,” nicotine can worsen anxiety symptoms and feelings of depression . The common misconception that nicotine relieves stress, anxiety, and depression may be rooted in the cycle of nicotine withdrawal. Irritability, anxiety, and depression are some of the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, and using nicotine relieves these symptoms temporarily. … [Read more...] about How quitting vaping nicotine can improve mental health
